It's not that it's hard, it's that they've been waiting for version 2.0 to be ready. Version 2.0 has been delayed.

dunno i think Lowtax said, buried deep in the Neogaf thread, that it's actually gonna be hard and expensive.

He intends to keep all of our existing features, and the database setup is really bad, so he's going to have to pay the Xenforo people to migrate all the threads and poo poo over.

He said it would be easy if this was stock vB, but since it's customized so much, the existing import tools won't work so it'll need to be done with customized tools.

He won't know when/how much it'll cost until 2.0 is released and he can work with their devs or whoever to build a migration plan.

edit:

Lowtax posted:

Still waiting for 2.0, then gotta figure out the costs to migrate and get all the custom code put in, since I've blown through the jpeg spaceship money on hosting costs and poo poo. I'll be able to get an estimate once they release 2.0 and I'm able to talk to coders / modders about the time requirements and amount of code needed for importing and adding all current features. Also layout-wise (or design-wise), the site would pretty much be the same, except certain functions (the purchase system, mobile versions, etc) would be enhanced.

As is, I've been tweaking the CSS so the site is currently usable on mobile devices, although ideally I'd like to go back to using jQuery to re-render it on mobile, but then you run into the issue of CSS changes loving poo poo up.

Lowtax posted:

Okay, if we had a stock, unmodified version of vB, we could, in theory, easily transfer everything over to a stock, unmodified version of xenForo. Unfortunately, the forums software is so heavily modded that roughly 80% of it is custom code hacked together over the years. This was done because, back in the early 2000s, there weren't mods available for things like buying an account, putting users on probation, bookmarking threads, buying custom titles, etc etc etc, so radium + the other coders had to manually edit the php of the core vB code to support these features. Now most of these features are (somewhat) available for forums, but the problem is that when we added these features, they were in-house and hacks to the existing vB code. So not only will all the custom db tables (like rap sheet, bookmarks, colored threads, etc etc) have to be manually recoded, but also converted to a new table and a new type of custom code. It comes down to the fact that none of the features we wanted were available at the time (as plugins), so we had to code them in-house. Now a lot of those features are supported, but to move ours over to a new system, it's like having to translate and convert every single mod.

In the time it took him to write that he could have written a custom SQL export function and been ready for when xenforo releases.

the forums are going to change actually. not in any major way, which would be annoying but something you could get over after the dust settled if you decided to stay.

no, they're going to change in the worst possible way. they're going to seem the same while actually being slightly different. a very visible minority is going to go vocally and violently insane for at least a month if not more while most people just go about their business. anarchy will reign for a while. there will be a lot of bans. then the new forum will assert itself and within a pretty small timeframe the new will become normal and people will stop caring.

until then it's gonna be a wild ride

Hell yeah. I'd also be down for a server of HL2's Eternal Silence spaceship mod or a good old fashioned goon rush on a free MMO.

Will the forums finally pay us for posting, instead of the other way around (which is barbaric and primitive)?

Forums revenue is now currently 8% of what it used to be, right now it takes roughly half a month *just* to pay for hosting costs, and I've had to take out loans to cover bills, and I've had to take a $10,000 penalty to withdraw $10,000 from my IRA to cover costs, so we might have to wait a little bit before I can amass enough money to pay for pretty much anything at this point. Aint nobody buying nothing on the forums.
