Going to have to pivot my project.

I'm pretty sure the unique landmark building chain I was hijacking is going to be hit by the dlc stick at some point anyway. The Amphitheatre of Yvresse looks deliberately lazy/placeholdery. They'll probably replace it with the Spire when Eltharion moves in.

FWIW there is a landmark mod on the workshop you can look at, but it's definitely startpos edits for new landmarks. You could try using the building lock stuff they added with Bretonnia to limit how they are built in provinces, but you'll have the problem of that building being visible in every settlement but not actually buildable without some specific thing.

I've added a variantdefinition to this mod a dozen times now and every time I've tried to rename it it's been deleted from the pack this is insane.

The other two files saved properly on the first and third attempts.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Complaining about it online was the step I missed, apparently.

The PFM has a few little oddities with localization and variant mesh stuff where you have to sometimes click off the thing in the directory and/or click off the edited line to get the update to actually stick. Just try things like hitting enter to repeat the entry, and then clicking around and clicking back and making sure the change went through, then saving. It can be weird like that, which is why I try to just stick to the regular DB packs since they don't have many of those issues.

Or you can look up how to do everything in the assembly kit, but personally I don't think thats worth the effort since the PFM is basically a less tedious version even with the above.

It makes sense thematically and locationally but I'll be super sad to see a dumb idiot with no personality like Throt get the nod over Thanquol, who is one of the most iconic characters in the entire setting.

thebardyspoon
Jun 30, 2005
I reckon they'll put both in. I can see Thanquol being the weirdest LL yet since he's so inept yet powerful. Throt could add the giant rats and modify them and the other monster units, having a northern start for the Skaven would be rad as well. Vampire Counts have 5 LLs as well so it's not like it's unprecedented, they're going to be putting out a lot more DLC for this before 3 comes out as well.

I feel like when they re did the hero skill trees they made a lot of them rather generic. Dwarves kind of suffer in this regard:

Thanes don't get access to mounts which puts them at a disadvantage compared to other similar counterparts.

Runesmiths lost the +growth passive which really hurts dwarves. Their rune items also kind of suck, hogging a follower slot to buff one stat. It would make more sense for it to be an aura effect, because having a hero that could constantly grant a passive +6 MA, MD, str and charge bonus would be decent.

I also feel like the older followers aren't quite as good as the newer ones. Some of them are really lame, like Runesmiths apprentice. Beyond stuff like Archivist and Dwarf bride many of the others feel rather situational.

Re: Giant Eagles, they are very much "one sucks, four are great" sort of toy. I've had a lot of success with them in siege attacks, to support infantry storming walls. They're also good at picking off artillery and archer lines. I'm pretty sure they're the fastest unit in the game as well, so they can break up flanking cav charges and go after fleeing flying lords. Phoenixes are, probably, better but eagles come online a lot quicker.

Use eagles as you would bats. Tie down enemy ranged (particularly in sieges) to give your line time to move up on attack. If you're defending just harass off dogs and light cavalry. They're pretty good at turning locked battles as well by just flying into the back of enemy infantry blocks to do a bit of morale damage.

High Elf siege defenses taught me that Eagles are very good at cycle charging unsupported heroes and generals, shutting down artillery, stopping cavalry and charging enemies in the back (thanks to their fear). They're not like excellent, but an Eagle is a versatile tool that saved more than a few battles for me.

The one time I did Teclis's ME start the eagle was pretty handy for killing Necromancer Lords and beating up chaff, I assume it works the same against Grey Seers. Having 4 of them swooping my lines as Delves was distilled misery.

Morathi kind of sucks for a while, especially compared to Malekith, but dropping overcast Pits of Shades on enemy infantry blobs usually fills up a third of the murderbar on its own, plus it looks cool as hell. I attacked a t3 Lothern and was kind of leery of the swordmasters, but the AI moved one up so they were next to each other. One spell later they were down to like 5 models each.

I just wish she had Pendulum or Spirit Leech or anything better than Soulblight in the first 4 choices. I should swap Doom and Darkness with Aspect of the Dreadknight.

Branchwraiths are better casters for the first 8 levels and they don't have a blue or red line competing for points.

Am I confused or are we talking about the -weapon damage -armour one, because that's good but not amazing against matchups where I'm most concerned about darkshards/archers/seaboys at range.

Finding out that holding alt while targeting spells stops them snapping to units is also great, doesn't work on all of them but it's amazing for a lot of de/buffs.

Soulblight is decent, that and one of her lore passives lowers an entire frontlines armor with 45 which is amazing if you are running a lot of black ark corsairs for example.

I've been using Morathi a bit in multiplayer and it's amazing the kind of bullshit you can get away with as Morathi just by stacking up her debuffs.

your ranged units punch much much harder above their weight with all of morathis srmor debuffs, it's not exactly flashy but you can pick really crazy fights with her and win based on that alone.

Armor debuffing isn't that great for dark elf ranged since they all have very high armor piercing values already (well, except for the Corsair handbows)

I'm rather disappointed at how minimal of a presence Skaven have in the Dwarf campaign. I was hoping they'd be as ubiquitous as the Greenskins but in the Old World they just are...not. They tend to just piddle about with 1 or 2 settlements and won't hesitate to lick Dawi beard for treaties and alliances. I was really looking forward to Karak 8 peaks being this epic 3 way fight but more often than not you are fighting off Chaos rebellions there more than anybody else.

Eagle chat: eagles are only good at killing single-model things, and because of their bad defense they're only good at it if the enemy is attacking someone else. Have your lord engage a lord, and have the eagle flank charge him while the lords duke it out. They're fast, too, and can chase enemies off the battlefield that are already routing.

Other than that, it's just a really bad unit. They die to all spearmen, most normal infantry, most cavalry, and sometimes lose to high-rank artillery.

Phoenix bombing is very much my poo poo. The AI likes to mob up around Lords and when 2-3 groups of units mob up around Tyrion, that Phoenix starts incinerating hundreds of enemies at a time. Once the bomb is over, the phoenix is very useless though.

I am glad to be wrong re: Dwarf ranged being completely outclassed by Skaven cunning and bastardery. Mind you, a Skaven player would probably still trounce a Dwarf opponent in most battles, but with Cannons being amazing snipers that can counter-battery and pick off large targets with ease, it's not quite a complete stomp all of the time. Also, I really missed having actual ranged units instead of (excellent, but not really a fit for stand and shoot duties) skirmishers.

On the other hand stardragon stacks feel overly fiddly. As HE you can get (-25 -20-15)% upkeep for owning Calador, dragon willed and a frugal noble. Add the other upkeep skills and they become rather reasonably priced. But then you have 19 aimed abilities that recharge two times a battle.

I always felt like the Nobles or whatever the agents are called should generate a bit of influence every turn instead of having a mission. Eventually having like 5 nobles strewn around and having to click around remembering to do a mission for each of them every turn doesn't sound like fun.
