Plural is used for formality in a lot of languages. Compare third and fourth columns ("singular respectful" and "plural familiar") of that table: they're identical in about half the cases. Sometimes with an upper-casing for the respectful variant, though.

Also you can insult people by being too friendly (T) or by being too polite (V). It all depends on your normal relationship.
