hopeandjoy posted:“I can’t believe my JRPG has a lot of cutscenes” - goons No other pokemon game before has had a lot of cutscenes. X & Y definitely came the closest, but it wasn't nearly as bad, and at least those were about how powerful and smart You, The Player were.

Long, unskippable cutscenes in the year 2017 is pretty bad.

island 1 and 4 are less game and more visual novel dude. i didn't play gens 4-6 but the first 3 sure weren't like this. it's not fun to sit through. you can have a game with a story and cutscenes but i'm here to bash my pokemon against other ones. i will say the new cutscene at the altar of the moone is sweet. also, necrozma just oneshot all my dudes. back to the drawing board i guess! e: it's not even interesting poo poo either. oh you're lillie, oh hau loves loving eating and granddad. let me show you how to walk 4 feet to get to route 2 10 times. the funny thing is that i've missed like 2 directions just spamming through everything (the electric trial 3rd stage, seen other people saying they did the same). so i just don't pay attention to their story because it goes on so much.

I like the cutscenes and the characters in s&m but that stuff should really be skippable. at least add a fastforward button

Can you save before choosing your starter or do you still need to escort Lilly back and talk to the Kahuna?

USUM is like the enhanced third versions before them. The main story is the mostly same aside from forcing the use of new features and the Ultra Recon Squad appearing in a couple spots as neutral characters trying to understand Pokemon battles. After the third island are some slight changes. Lusamine's intentions are instead to save the world from Necrozma, but she still warps with Nebby's power. The story then continues right on to Poni Island with Mina being a little more invested in getting the Sun/Moon flute from Exeggutor Island, taking lines from the village chief. So by the time you get to the new Ultra Recon Squad/Necrozma content, you've pretty much played Sun and Moon again. Post-credits you're recruited by the URS to hunt an ultra beast, which is Burst or Assembly depending on the version. After catching them, the events of Episode RR happen. Post RR Giovanni is shown to have retreated and starts scheming his next plan before warping away. E: Starter selection is almost imminent and the bridge has a forced battle.

Yeah, and most of the cutscenes aren't even that interesting. They're just an extended form of handholding telling you where to go for the most part. A lot of them could be chopped off to lessen the bloat.

You get your starter before you see Lily now and have to fight the Spearow. Also lol that people complain about the cutscenes here and not the Gen V ones. Good god did those take forever and they happened constantly.

I think the 3D environments make the cutscenes last longer too. Even if you mash A constantly you can't skip the characters moving around or turning or the camera panning, or the Pokemon animations. It really adds to the bloat.

Yeah, some of the more recent pun-names are better than the English versions. On the other hand: Thunder, Thunders and Blackie (Zapdos, Jolteon, Umbreon)

Dr. Fetus posted:Yes. From what it sounds like, the game is nearly identical to Sun and Moon, so they didn't get rid of the railroading, and Lillie is still bad. ...but if you don't like her character, yeah, that sounds goddamn agonizing. I thought the Sun Moon plot was great, but I suspect the difference for that is liking Lillie's scenes.

Lillie is okay but they could of toned down the number of scenes that reinforced how whimpy and worthless she is at the start. She's way better than Hau though who contributes nothing to the story.

Talking with a friend, our one difference with how we felt about the plot was entirely about Lillie, and how the plot really goes around her. You're basically a supporting character in her story, at least until Lusamine's beaten, so how you feel about her would make a really big difference. Yeah, Lillie owned and being a supporting character was good because they could actually have some story in the game instead of people expositing at your blank slate. It also helps you're not competing with her. You're a trainer while she's having her own journey of self discovery.

PetraCore posted:Yeah, especially since she was brave enough to put Nebby in the bag and run away from her abusive mother with no game plan for survival after that, which takes massive guts. Having that sort of bravery emphasized could be a boon, I think. I don't think Hugh really hogs all the glory like at all. Not just in, the protag is the guy who accomplishes everything, but like he has nothing to do with Colress or Kyurem and he isn't really the big focus in many of the events. He shouts a lot though that's definitely a thing.
