it probably could have been a reasonable f-16 replacement if the navy's army's air force hadn't whined that they needed a VTOL version to operate from their stupid baby carriers

iirc, the original plan from the late 1990s was the f-22 was the gold-plated supercruise hyperstealthed ultimate air superiority dogfighting machine while the f-35 was meant to be the inexpensive mass-produced workaday multipurpose unglamorous ordinance hauler

this is how the f-15/f-16 relationship turned out. the f-16 was originally supposed to be a point defense interceptor!

The latency for a missile operator sitting in a B-52 or E-3 or whatever is meaningfully higher than for a missile operator sitting in an F-35 (who also has to fly the loving aircraft)?

we monitor many frequencies. we listen always. came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. it played us a mighty dub.
it's a joke, there's no reason for the f-35 to exist as it does

but seriously that's all it needs to be. the pilot's gaze direction is tracked by the cockpit and the missile seeker heads are slaved to that vector. so instead of maneuvering to line the plane up with the target, the pilot just has to locate the bad guy somewhere in his forward field of view, turn his head to put the target in that circle, and press a button, and the missile heads all rotate and lock on and can be fired from like 70 degrees off-axis. i believe this was introduced in 1989

iirc the f16 was orignally meant to not have radar (which is like half the cost of a modern plane). just a supercheap local interceptor, meant to be thrown in bulk at the migs and sukhois that would fill the sky over the fulda gap on day one of wwiii

of course once all the various parts of the air force got their oars in the design it ended up being a typical overpriced christmas tree do-everything (all weather! ground attack! in-air refuelling!) fighter plane, of which the usaf already had several kinds

"the pentagon and the art of war" has all the gory details

The Pentagon Wars book also talks about this. the bit about the bradley was made into a movie, but the book goes into far more detail about the f-15 and 16 procurements

While the joke about Russian cosmonauts using pencils while NASA spent millions designing a pen to work in zero gravity is completely unfounded there is a reason everyone just assumed it was true.

I would IRL like something like this in terms of mouse focus following eyeline but there would need to be an activating (thing) to make it actually apply.

I think there's already a thing for quadriplegic people that uses eye-tracking and blinking to move and activate a mouse cursor. Not to mention experiments with controlling cursors by thought though what I can only presume is magic.

TOBII have an eyetracker on the market now:

If I wasn't gaming on a 55" 4k tv (the tracking tops out at like 30" widescreen) I would probably pick one up just for fun.

I've had two of these and the lovely, cheap plastic armature that supports the unit on your headset snapped on both of them within a few months of very delicate usage. You can order replacements, but they're so ridiculously fragile that it's only a matter of time until they fall apart. Eventually I couldn't be bothered with the hassle anymore and consigned it to a crate in a closet and went back to mouselook.

all those little lines on the rear fuselage and wings are little 6" nylon strings riveted to the skin. the strings get blown around as the air flows along the flight surfaces, pointing in the direction of flow, so the engineers can get a sense of how the air is moving around the plane in the real world just from a photograph
