When Ford does the arithmetic and finds that retrofitting Pintos is more expensive than paying off the victims families, society needs to change that calculus.

The difference is that speed limits on US highways are almost universally ridiculously low. As previously stated in this topic, when the normal flow of traffic is 15mph+ above the limit, the limit needs to be raised. The only reasons it isn't are because lobbying for higher speed limits is political suicide and the low limits are a primary funding source for many police departments. HOV lanes on the other hand ostensibly exist to encourage carpooling, thereby reducing the number of cars on the road and improving traffic flow for everyone. Weather or not they work is an entirely different conversation, but they are intended to help people, not just generate money for the state.

Yeah, I sometimes feel like I'm driving like a douche, but there's definitely highways in this region where the cruising speed hits 85-90 in a 65, and the main highways by me are all 55 with general cruising speeds of 70-75. When I was younger I'd always just follow the rule of "be the 2nd or 3rd fastest driver," nowadays I rely pretty heavily on Waze. I try really hard not to be an aggro douchebag, but I do get really frustrated when people block the fast lane, especially on some of the interstate highways I used that are 2 lanes for extended periods. Also, I understand that a lot of times there's a semi-valid reason for it, but I really loving hate when there's 2 trucks going neck-and-neck in both lanes of a highway for extended periods of time

On the other hand, if the HOV lane is mostly empty, all that shows is usable road capacity is being wasted to satisfy someone's political viewpoint, same with 24hr bus lanes over here. Obeying rules is fine if the rules are reasonable and justifiable.

Parent and child spaces? I don't really agree with them, the reason I don't park in them is because I don't want to park my car next to the people who do. I do like they coral the majority of those drivers in one easily-avoided place, though.

No resource will ever be allocated entirely efficiently. Car pool lanes encourage car pooling, car pooling is in the public interest, and that’s good enough for me. I am in favour of tolled access for solo drivers as long as there is excess capacity. If you want to go socialist, have a free lottery for a month’s access.

Parent and child parking spaces wouldn't be "necessary" if standard spaces were more than 4 loving feet wide. Cars and people are getting wider leading to some fat slob having to force their Q7 door into mine in order to slide their greasy blubbery bulk into the driver's seat. After they did the same trying to buckle their blubbery spawn into the rear child seat. I think there is also a greasy hand print on my roof because supporting their own bulk was apparently beyond them.

Car makers really need to start thinking on designing doors which can open in narrow gaps. Vans have sliding doors, but that not really a solution for regular cars. I know there was a concept car where the front door sort of folded right into the frame behind the front wheel when opened and, even when fully opened, the door barely stuck out more than a foot or so. IMO if you're not doing at least 5 MPH more than the lane next to you you're not passing, you're pacing, and that makes you an rear end in a top hat. If your truck can't achieve passing speed that's your problem and you shouldn't make it everyone else behind you's problem as well.

Also, when one truck is passing another truck 5-10MPH speed differential, but the faster one is still going 25 under the goddamn limit because it's a steep hill. Every semi that tries to pass another on Ten Mile Hill on the TransCanada should be forcibly flung off that loving bridge. I swear it happens EVERY TIME!

The problem is you have an environment where there is the drive to lower prices (hence governed speeds due to fuel economy savings) and regulatory issues such as hours of service that are quite inflexible. So you have corporate stupidity/greed/or call it whatever you want combined with "we're the government, we are here to help." Granted, we don't want a truck driver driving 20 hours a day fueled with Red Bull and nicotine. But at the same time you also have GPS and elogs which track everything with pinpoint accuracy. Every mile counts. And a couple miles might be the difference between hitting a truckstop or a HOS violation. No fudging like paper logs. So how to solve it? Well maybe ask the first driver via CB to slow up some so he can pass faster. But where is the incentive for that driver? He's in the same boat. The real solution lies within the industry. But hell I've been ranting along and it can devolve in how their are good and bad companies yada yada and what they are doing wrong. tl;dr Don't disagree it is a dick move, but that's what it takes to get your stuff from Amazon quick and cheap and his career is on the line.

Another thing about speed limiting trucks is that they will go as fast as they can no matter the speed limit or conditions. A 62 mph truck will be going 62 in a 45 mph construction zone if traffic allows it. Having had my truck set to 65 after 3 years of 73 changed how I drive, and even where I take my breaks. If the Feds get their way it will only get WAY worse because they will likely listen to the major truckload companies and go under 65.
