Politically, the good thing about the Roy Moore situation is that no matter how the election turns out republicans are hosed.

If Moore wins he might not be seated and it will fracture the party. There are clearly some repubs who wont tolerate a child rapist. Plus, the national message can become "Republicans are the party of childn rapists".

If Moore loses then the dems get a seat in a state they wouldnt have gotten othereise.

A great situatioon either way, that is if you ignore the whole paedophellia thing.

Also if Moore wins and the Republicans seat him (I honestly think they might refuse and see that as less damaging nationally, any bill that the GOP passes then becomes "Congress person X agrees with known child rapist and pedophile Roy Moore."

Even climate change is more macro whereas the environment at a micro level was worse 30 years ago.

Like, are we seriously going to see rape victims being thrown in jail for daring to report their accusers? Because these insane judges have pretty much unlimited power in that arena.

It’s federal court, so only federal crimes, no rape, but probably a lot of lovely decisions involving drugs and immigration. Also everyone that has to practice before him will recognize that he’s a bad judge and that’ll effect decisions. Due to the cost and time of appealing in federal courts, a lot won’t get overturned but just accepted. However, other decent judges will recognize his opinions are often trash.

There are a lot of bad federal judges out there already. It’s when they get key appellate or Supreme Court spots that it really matters

I often have to come to work weekends in order to make sure servers stay up and all that nonsense. I decided to read through the thread, and here's a personal(-ish) story that kinda threw me off guard. Earlier today, my daughter Skype'd me and told me that she and her girlfriend watched Casino last night. After the movie was over, her girlfriend said something to the effect : "I sincerely wish that I could go loving Frankie Marino on the piece of poo poo coach who raped my older brother back when he was in high school". My daughter said that it was really off-putting just how to-the-point and very matter-of-fact her girlfriend said those words. And it made me wonder: If more cases of people (read: more than likely guys) being scumbags get out there, just how long is it going to be until we see / read news of some rear end in a top hat rapist getting a violent payback?

It will probably happen, but it likely won't be that frequent. The victims already know what happened, and it's not like the laws about violent retribution are going to change. If they were going to do it, they already would have. Friends and family members are expressing the helplessness they feel with the situation, but once again the laws aren't going to change so those that would seek retribution already could. A lot of the time when people talk like that, it's as much about validation and healing rather the actually killing someone.

The big change here isn't close family members and the victims knowing, it's the general public. How that changes concerns me. This stuff happens a lot, especially the further back you go. It's taken decades of patient work by feminists to change the viewpoint that these things are not ok. Not laws, but bringing the general public around with education on consent and related issues. I'm worried that everybody will see that it's so common that it's clearly not worth worrying about. On the other hand it is a point and time to continue the lesson. We aren't going to arrest everybody or fix the past, but we can choose our future.

Interesting history derail here (because nothing is going to happen until Monday morning anyway). The Pope's secular power comes from a forged document. The legend was that, on a military excursion in Persia, the Emperor Constantine developed leprosy. Luckily for him, Pope Sylvester happened to be nearby and baptised him, instantly curing him. Constantine was so grateful that he said that the Pope could rule all of the Empire, all of the churches anywhere in the world and specifically have ownership of the city of Rome plus a bunch of islands and city-states around the Med. The Pope, being a modest kind of chap said that Constantine could carry on being Emperor, but Rome would be handy as well as that bit about rulership over all of the churches in the world. The document was probably written in the 8th century (about 400 years after Constantine died) and at the time, the Church of Rome was only one of several churches trying to claim primacy. The Church of Jerusalem had a much stronger claim to be the mother church, as did the Church of Ephesus. Even the Celtic Church had a lot more secular power. In a stroke of luck, the Church of Rome suddenly remembered this old letter from their good friend Constantine saying that actually they were the best and the rest were all #fakenews #sosad. By the 13th century, the Donation of Constantine was very definitively proven to be a forgery but, by that time it was too late and the Church of Rome had an iron grip over almost all of Europe. The Holy Roman Emperor ruled the lands given to the Church in the name of the Pope and at his sufferance.

it comes from a place of love. you and your spouse love each other and biologically that means babies. usually the woman is the driver there.

generally men are less driven to have babies but do it to make their wife happy. being too deep in internet doom and gloom supresses baby urges

Ive also noticed in the people around me. that people enjoy their free lifestyle too much to be burdened by babies. when they do have a baby its more likely to be one baby to check that box off the list
