Chappie is pretty much Die Antwood the movie with a guest appearance by a robot.

I can't stand them personally but if you like them it should be ok.

This was such a common complaint about the movie and I honestly don't understand it. I had literally never heard of Die Antwoord in my entire life until everyone started bitching about them like six months before Chappie dropped.

Yeah I never heard of them either before seeing the movie, I thought they did a good job.

I like Die Antwoord and I liked Chappie, but at times it almost felt like a Die Antwoord ad I think they could have toned it down a bit.

As far as the plot goes, the individual cases seem way too straightforward. They are asked to help in a case. They pretty much head to the the guy who turns out to be the killer right away just about every time, way too linear. I realize it's a TV series and the episodes are shorter, but even if they had ONE case and the resolution of it was more interesting it would have been better IMO.

I thought this was sort of the point. To a modern audience its sort of a "no duh" who was responsible since we've had the benefit of knowing more about modern police work but for the time it was revolutionary.

Yeah but for me it doesn't make for interesting viewing, at all.

Bond chat:

I rewatched the Timothy Dalton Bonds yesterday:

The Living Daylights is a pretty solid entry as far as the franchise goes, it has some good action and it's pretty funny at times. Bond's tricked out Aston Martin is one of the sexiest cars in any movie, period. The stakes are rather low in this entry, technically the villains' shenanigans could have led to catastrophe but it never felt like it would come to that because neither the Russians nor the West seemed to take the situation at face value. The lady lead was a dumbass by bond girl standards. The theme by A-Ha was alright. The plot became increasingly nonsensical in the back half, but that's to be expected in this series. The big bad is hilariously lame, a "mastermind" grognard played by Joe Don Baker, and he's played to hammy perfection. The mujaheddin subplot is pretty embarrassing in hindsight. Overall it's fun enough to warrant a watch.

License to Kill is simply godawful. It starts on a silly note - Bond and longtime CIA buddy Felix Lighter get waylaid on Lighter's wedding day to save the day and then parachute into the wedding - but it quickly becomes a dire melodrama. The stakes in this Bond are possibly the lowest in the series - Bond is taking revenge on a cocaine cowboy who doesn't pose a threat to global security or anything like that, he's just an rear end in a top hat. Robert Davi is alright in the role, but the character is in no way compelling. The Bond girl is one of the better ones, being both clever and competent, and she saves Bond's rear end a number of times but never really needs his help. There's an amusing cameo by Wayne Newton. Otherwise this entry's a depressing slog, and I'm going to spoil the best part for all y'all because there's no reason to sit through the movie for this money shot:

tl;dr - Living Daylights pretty good License to Kill real bad

edit: Bond continuity issue: do the subsequent movies simply ignore that Felix Lighter had his leg bitten off by a shark?

I believe Leiter's appearances after this have been in the Craig films, which started with Casino Royale which was a prequel so it's kind of a reboot for the character

Very, very soft continuity: Bond's marriage to Tracy is mentioned in Licence to Kill, he kills Blofeld in revenge for her death in the beginning of Diamonds are Forever, Die Another Day is packed with references to all the prior films, etc.

As a rule of thumb Bond actors have a cycle where their first films are good and then it's mostly downhill from there. Dalton just compressed that cycle into two movies.

I look at it like there's a real continuity that's presented to us through Hollywood reenactments that are a product of their time. So names and dates may not be accurate, but important plot points, like Bond cruising around Iceland in a sex submarine, are undisputed.

I caught Wanted on Prime the other day because I'm an idiot and wanted to see just how bad it was. It's real drat bad but if you like bad movies you might enjoy the stupidity of it all. Like the film is staged with a phrase something like "1000 YEARS AGO A GUILD OF WEAVERS DECIDED TO BECOME ASSASSINS". What? Ok. I'm shocked that James McAvoy managed to salvage a career after this.

Wanted is real dumb but leans into it in a way that I enjoyed. Also Order of the Black Eagle is the only movie I know of where a monkey drives a tiny monkey tank so it's definitely got that going for it.

They'd make a real good double feature now that I think about it, but save the monkey movie for last.

I've been rewatching every single Bond film. I'm only up to The Man With the Golden Gun but honestly I think they've all been fine, if what you want is a James Bond movie. I'm going to skip all the Brosnan ones, though, because they are trash. So I wouldn't say Goldeneye is the only good Bond. I haven't seen any of the films between The Man With the Golden Gun and the Brosnan films, so I can't say if the quality drops off, but I'm thinking of skipping Octopussy, Never Say Never Again, and A View to Kill so I can jump straight to the first Dalton, The Living Daylights, which I've heard is good. I might have weird tastes in Bond films because I like all the Craig ones, too, so maybe I'm discerning in the wrong ways.
