Lootboxfall incoming. Also everyone will be forced to watch them.

I wonder if the plot will be changed to the giant, evil, exploitative, planet destroying corporation being good actually.

You no longer call down your titan in the middle of a match; instead you call in a giant lootbox containing a "weed life" skin that lasts one match for a gun you don't own and can only gain through microtransactions. Titan meter is replaced with lootbox meter, and teammates can earn more money for the next wave in frontier defense by watching you call in and open your box. Gain an edge by buying a random boost instantly at the start of competitive matches with PilotBucks!

You can no longer wall run, you can only wall jump, because testers thought wall running was too harder and EA demanded the game be easier to approach.

Popped in titanfall 1 after not playing it since the day 2 came out and I kind of loving like it! I've got no problem finding games of attrition quick as can be. Lack of slide is the biggest issue I feel. Gonna play 1 for a little bit. Love both of these games.

Farewell, marble-dwellers!

This is the part that continues to stick out for me:

quote:

Perhaps still the biggest concern in my mind was EA's decision to release Titanfall 2 within a week of its other big published shooter, Battlefield 1, during the holiday season to essentially compete with itself for money.

Why would you want to work under the publisher that did that?

I can only assume that it was cashing out.

I wouldn't want to see Respawn and Titanfall under Nexon's wing, because Nexon are Korean and will turn any game they own into microtransaction city, but much the same can be said about EA.

I hope everyone working at Respawn got a big payday with the EA buyout. And if not, they should milk EA for all they're worth before jumping ship.

They got 165 mil in cash but the remaining two thirds are tied to backside bullshit and stuff like the netacritic scores of the Star Wars game and Titanfall 3 so... yeah.

I talked about the deal with Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn, and Patrick Soderlund, executive vice president at EA. They say that the opportunity arose and the timing was right to take the familiar relationship to the next level. They said that Respawn will operate autonomously and continue its work on a Titanfall game, a Star Wars game, and a non-Star Wars, non-Titanfall virtual reality game for the Oculus Rift VR headset.

“We want to have the best games. We have a good relationship,” Soderlund said. “The creative freedom is still here: DICE, BioWare, our studios have creative freedom and creative integrity. That’s what gets those studios to make great games.”

Allow me to translate the words of noted liar Patrick Soderlund, into what the rest of us know he actually means:

quote:

Respawn had better loving watch their rear end. Either your games pull in billions of dollars and looks good on the balance sheet, or you get to join Visceral, and Origin, and Maxis, and Mythic, and Bullfrog, and Westwood, and Pandemic. Also, you can do whatever you like, so long as it uses Frostbite, and gets focus group and market tested to death.

Never seen such a post; the irony of it adding nothing to the discussion, while at the same time criticizing the discussion of becoming stale and irrelevant. Great work.

It doesn't matter, 25K isn't that much for a game that's going to sell millions and nickel and dime the poo poo out of those millions of players.

Well it's up to -367k now so maybe this is it. Maybe this is the turning po....nah. It's Star Wars and heavily marketed. People are going to buy the poo poo out of it.

Honestly I think between Reddit and Facebook outrage it’ll definitely have a noticeable impact. I see them backpedaling a bit in some capacity but who knows.

I mean really with the last one I had so many very casual gamer friends that couldn’t care less about reading reviews/gaming forums/etc. Even they were like “wow this game is poo poo”

People posting it to Facebook “Hell yeah just got battlefront”

A day later

“This game loving sucks I’m trading it in”

Quite the opposite, they are hugely profitable with no sign of slowing down, but so was the video game industry prior to 1983.

I think the only way this will stop is if people become immune to F2P gimmicks the same way we became immune to internet ads, which I keep hoping will happen and it keeps not happening.

Audiences are not stupid. Once they know that their 60 bucks is basically the entrance fee to an also-ran games-as-service f2p casino designed to extract more money out of them, sales are going to plummet.

Lootboxes have been kinda annoying and lovely, but now we've hit an even higher level of egregious garbage, with them showing up at Normandy and locking items behind 40+hours of grinding in a full-priced game. They're actively getting in the way of player enjoyment (and that's by design).

When I say the days are numbered, I am not talking about anything happening in the short term, it's going to need AAA publishers to get even more aggressive at monetization (they will) and for quality to drop further (it will) and for the publishers to become more aggressive about retaining players on a single title-as-service (they will). I expect we're about 5 years out, sadly.

Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits; and Iden at 5,000 credits.
