This episode used a really soft touch to hit really hard.AnacondaHL posted:I thought episode 06 was really, really good. The realization that they were about to record and witness the last attempted flight in human history hit me hard. That part got to me, too. Ishii saying that her flight would be recorded in the tail end of history really drove home for me what this episode was all about. I hope Ishii will be okay...

What got me was the fact that even when Ishii finally flew, and crashed, she was still melancholy. No sweeping orchestra, tears of joy, or a breakdown on being the last pilot in human history who made a failed test flight the tail end of humanity.

"Maybe she's getting along with [hopelessness] now" Jesus, Yuu... This is the overwhelming melancholy I'm here for. God drat. The tragedy at the end kind of overwhelmed how horrifying the beginning was. If their vehicle was really broken there... they'd be dead. They mentioned a few times here how tenuous their existence is in this world. And Yuu cheerily hums a tune about hopelessness... Chi gets these two through the world physically, but she'd probably be lost without Yuu in a different way. It feels like they're aware this is the end of humanity. The people we've met are entirely alone. There's no reason to think there's anyone else out there, besides Yuu's optimism. This could be the last few humans too far apart from each other to rebuild anything, just living however they can. Chi's journal might be the end of history. I love this story so much.

It's interesting that the two adults we've had any meaningful interactions with, Kanazawa and Ishii, haven't the slightest interest in trying to rebuild any kind of human society. They don't try to take the girls in or re-form a family unit. Instead they just focus on their personal obsessions to the exclusion of all else. It's as if the world has already ended, and they're just waiting around and keeping themselves busy until death claims them through age, illness, starvation, or accident.

We know the girls were alive when that happened so presumably others do as well. Its impossible to tell exactly how long ago that was though.

There was a brief scene in the first episode that showed them being sent away while the war was still happening. By the looks of it, they were alive when the apocalypse happened, but they were too young to really remember any of it. It's probably why they're relatively well-adjusted compared to the adults they've come across. They didn't know the pre-war world well enough to feel the pain of its destruction.

It showed them being sent away during an attack, but it's not clear if that was during the apocalypse or after. It's possible that some group of survivors attacked their settlement many, many years after most of civilization had been destroyed.

Yeah, I get the impression that scene was relatively recent, and when they started travelling alone, but that they've never known a non-poo poo world.
