Open Democratic congress seat! If you live in the district and have ever wanted to run for congress, do it now because whoever wins will probably hold onto it for the next 30 years.

It's so bad that the current official procedure for reporting sexual harassment refers to a defunct agency and there hasn't been an official complaint filed since 2011.

quote:

Early in her tenure in the state Senate, Wendy Davis remembers having a conversation at a political event with an older man who happened to be a recently elected, first-term House member. Unaware she was a fellow lawmaker, he reached forward, as though to pat her arm, and instead reached between her arm and breast and cupped her breast.

“It wasn't an accidental brushing,” the former state senator said. “It was a purposeful touching of my breast."

Davis told her colleagues in the House about the incident and "as a consequence of that, he had a challenge getting anything passed,” she said.

Finally, he apologized. But Davis, the Fort Worth Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2014 after serving in the state senate for six years, acknowledged that her position gave her a form of recourse not available to other women working in the Capitol.

Also CNN had a story today about the epidemic of sexual harassment on Capitol Hill and cited in particular a rep from CA and one from TX as coming up over and over again, but they didn't report the names. Any guesses no need to guess it's 100% Blake Farenthold

Wait what. What the gently caress does the Alamo have to do with the UN?

zoux

A couple years ago the UN announced it would name the Alamo a World Heritage Site which people took to mean the UN was going to invade and turn it into an abortion-and-gun-seizing clinic.

They're still mad the UN said the Alamo is one of the world's important heritage sites.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jul/05/alamo-unesco-world-heritage-site-texas

quote:

A United Nations agency on Sunday named the Alamo and the four Spanish colonial Catholic missions in San Antonio a World Heritage Site, making them the first places in Texas deemed to be of “outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity”.

The decision capped a nine-year campaign by San Antonio and Texas to have the early 18th-century missions listed alongside world treasures such as Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal and Angkor Wat. The missions are now the 23rd World Heritage Site in the US.
...
Casandra Matej, director of San Antonio’s convention and visitors bureau, said the listing would prompt a full scale, international tourism campaign. She estimated it will mean more than 1,000 new jobs for the city’s already robust tourism industry, and a $100m annual boost for the region.

But the designation has not been entirely embraced in Texas, where the phrase “United Nations” provokes suspicion among some. The Texas Republican Party’s official platform includes opposing “granting jurisdiction and sovereignty over Texas’ cultural sites to any international body”.

Matej said there was no way that would happen, and noted that the UN exercised no “sovereignty” over other US World Heritage sites, such as Philadelphia’s Independence Hall or Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home in Virginia.

“The current management, how everything is managed, will stay the same,” she said. “This is a designation that will draw visitors to our destination, and allow us to share our splendid missions with the world.”

The UN has been a crazy right wing boogey man forever because it's at the nexus of Evangelicals who believe it's Gog (or Magog), the New World Order as foretold in Revelations and the prepper gun nuts who think it's part of the international Jewish conspiracy to take their rights away.

TX-26 has like three people actively campaigning in the dem primaries to run for our house seat in 2018. Our district includes all of Denton but the republican candidate won in 2016 with like 66% of the vote so I don't know if it's very realistic to expect a win here. They are all putting in the effort though, which is neat.
