I fuckin love SMAC for its writing and tight mechanical/story integration — especially the way the endgame devolves into utter insanity with two tech breakthroughs a turn, Planet spewing mind worms everywhere, and planetbusters causing 2000m of sea level rise. I hated Beyond Earth. I'm looking for a new strategy game! Should I get Civ 6, Stellaris or Endless Legend? And how has 6 sorted out in the general Civ pantheon?

Endless Legend is the least poo poo and most lore heavy of the three...I wouldn't exactly call it great but each faction is different and has their own story so it's good for a few games at least.

I'd suggest Endless Legend. Civ 6 is very boring and the UI is terrible. It will be at least an expansion for it to be better, but maybe never.

I've avoided Civ6 based on this thread, but for Stellaris vs EL:

Stellaris has a beautiful early game, and a strong sense of space-colonization. A lot of the fun is in the 'discovery' as you grow outwards and storyline scripts kick in and you uncover new mini-scenarios (personal favorite: trying to assimilate some cavemen and having a huge loving quest chain spawn from it). Stellaris has a wonderful sense of asymmetrical diplomacy, with warmongering empires (who spawned waaaay in advance of you and are huge) eating neighbors, and you allying with other friends to fend them off, then taking that federation to beat up the bully who is smaller than all of you after you've teched up. Then midgame hits. Then you hate the game. It's just tedious bullshit and turn-counting as you backfill your cognizable worlds, waiting for endgame (or the sweet sweet release of death) to come. My second playthrough confirmed all of this.

Endless Legend, however has super-fluffy prebuilt races&storylines, solid mechanics, and great replayability since each race plays so differently. The mechanics kinda throw you in the deep end asap, unlike Civ5 which was great for slowly rolling new things out over the ages. Diplomacy's a wee bit sparse, and eventually you get good enough to bump up the difficulty, which is needed since a competent human will roll over the AI in combat, and conquest solves all problems, all of which is much like in Civ.

I'd take EL over Stellaris any day, EL's been built to be more of a 'game' rather than paradox's 'experience'.

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

The only caveat I'd add to EL over Stellaris is that in a couple months Paradox is overhauling a bunch of poo poo again so it;ll probably be better than it was before, but EL is still a super tight game

Feel free to rec others! I'm sorry to hear Civ 6 turned out badly. I bounced off Civ 5 hard, did 6 have the same issues of schizoid AI and shallow mechanics? I saw somebody mentioning that 1UPT absolutely did not work out, tell me why!

I like VI and am having fun with it, but I suppose I'm in the minority for that here. I mostly play it multiplayer though.

Also I'm still inordinately annoyed with Stellaris for making it so that the two ethoses based around equal rights and treating other beings well can't give robots equal rights, only the people who don't have any particular set morals but do really like technology and also are atheists.

I've been giving Vox Populi for Civ V a shot based on this thread's recommendation. I like it a lot, though it does seem there's almost too much choice in some regards, and the inflated tile yields makes it hard to determine if +X to a yield will have any discernible effect.

well, i've got plenty of recs outside this genre but not so many within it :v:

so barring, say, alpha protocol, prey, tenth line, or voidspire tactics? go with endless legend

Endless Space 2 is getting an update shortly that should really improve the diplomacy side of things. (As well as a bunch of other smaller changes, like adding pirate lairs to replace that RIDICULOUS system of friendly minor factions spitting out pirate fleets.)

The three that add new factions(Shadows, Shifters, Tempest) are the ones I'd suggest if you don't get them all at once in a sale. Shadows adds espionage, Shifters makes the winter portion of the game something more than just an annoyance, and Tempest adds ocean combat that is strangely missing from the base game. Each come with a new faction that takes advantage of the new mechanics, and they are each very unique.

I'd pass on Guardians. It adds giant units, legendary deeds(the equivalent of wonders in Civ), and global events. It feels bloated and inelegant to me. I've been considering just turning it off.

I reinstalled Civ V (including BNW etc.)

And...it's such a better game (at this point).

To be honest, I prefer the graphical style of Civ V. I love the narrator and the quotes are better too. I like the progression better and overall it is significantly better balanced than Civ VI.

I hope they do release some big-rear end expansions to bring Civ VI up to Civ V level of polish.

Oh, I like Civ VI, but the quotes are indefensible. Went way, way too far in trying to be funny and mostly failed.

Also not a fan of how one-dimensional most of the leaders are, with most of their lines coming back around to their one defining trait (Gandhi is a pacifist, Amanitore likes cities, Cyrus is treachery incarnate, etc. though the latter two at least get cool war declarations and responses to such). The loading screen intros are a really minor thing but those are similarly bad, being the leader's single personality trait and some of their civ's things summarized in a paragraph basically. Really, nearly everything writing-related (except some bits of the Civlopedia, but really even it) is pretty disappointing. Which is minor for a strategy game really, but still, it's cringe-y at times.

Ask me about the shitty opinions I have about Paradox games!
I'd recommend Stellaris over EL any day. EL's AI is so bad that it feels like they're not even playing the game. I'm sure they have fixed the insanely buggy story quests now at least but I hated that part of the game too, to spend so long doing something and have it not work was frustrating as hell.

That said Stellaris is still the framework of a paradox game and you can't really "win", there's no end game. You just play until you want to start over, pretty much.

They're remarkable, it's one of those things you cannot believe survived being pitched let alone made it through months/years of development. Someone important at Firaxis must think they're really good which bodes well for the series

I think I've said this before, but I legit think Firaxis should publicly apologize for them and completely replace them in the first expansion.

It's feature-packed so yeah, there is an overwhelming number of choices, but stick with it and you'll be comfortable after a couple of playthroughs.

It's not flawless though. There are way too many buildings and they don't go obsolete, so even when you found a city in the modern era you still have to build a circle of stones for all the city elders to sit on and think up science.

There also comes a point where "build everything in every city" is a valid option. There's no mechanics to encourage city specialisation.

Actually, in the later ages, you can build advanced settlers which give you a bunch of pre-built buildings when founding cities.

But yes, all cities still need a well and an elder council.

I remember a Civ 4 mod where you couldn't build a city before you invented the required techs. You just walked around while gaining technology points or something like that. Might even have been Civ 3. And after that you were able to build stuff such as firepits and cave paintings.

It really was too much game to play.

This is one of things I've ended up really liking about Vox Populi, funnily enough. I picked up the "go wide, then build everything in every city" impulse somewhere along the line in base Civ 5, and the Progress tree lets me run with that impulse and rewards me spades for doing so.

I've got a current playthough with the Inca on a Large map where I've got like 50 cities, and most of them are my own. Where others see frozen hellholes, I see 20 population cities full of buildings.

Isn't that feature documented? The wall keeping barbarians out has been the main reason I've built it whenever I could. I think it worked like that in Civ4 too.

It was like that in Civ 4. In Civ 5 it's only supposed to be :

- Enemy land units must expend 1 extra movement per tile inside your territory. The wall encompasses all of the territory of the civilization that has built it.

- Free Walls in the city.
