JER GEDDA FERDA RADDA ARA!

The fact that absent humans wooly mammoths persisted in one locale to the mid-Holocene and then went extinct. Also, there isn't a general dearth of early sites in general overall, there are fewer in number than there are large Late Paleoindian sites (eg. not isolated point finds or caches), there are good and fairly sizeable examples, particularly in the Northwest Coast (see Dixon 2013, and Carlson and Dalla Bona 1999, the latter is particularly good about discussing subsistence) and at Monte Verde. There is also an extinction of megafauna that don't seem to have been heavily emphasized economically (mastodon, glyptodont etc.).

For furthes info Wroe et al. (2013) goes over Australian data and see Rule et al. (2012) for interesting data that could go either way. For a good counter argument based on Rule et al. see McGlone (2012). Barnosky et al. (http://science.sciencemag.org/content/sci/suppl/2004/09/30/306.5693.70.DC1/barnosky-SOM.pdf) and Barnosky et al. (2004) also provide a good global overview of data, even if it is just a review. The Aubrey Site in Texas provides good evidnce for a lacustrine adaptation.

The death toll from yesterday's attack in Mogadishu has now hit 189 and some reports have it well over 200. It was a VBIED that was detonated at the busiest intersection in the city. Al Jazeera has a report from the scene.

It constantly depresses me that the US and Europe have basically occupied Somalia through independently contracted mercenaries for over a decade yet practically nobody is even aware. This is the future of America's forever hell-war, outsourced to petty dictatorships and private international contractors and aid agencies with the expenses laundered through the UN.

The hell does a 'routine patrol' in Niger entail.

Is there a resource out there for learning about the US military presence in Africa and what they're upto? What are the major client states?

I guess more people are getting interested in this:

Yeah it became a big deal in the US after Trump was rude to the widow of one of the soldiers.

Just typing that I'm realising how insane the US news cycle is right now.

Well the take over of ZBC by the military has been widely confirmed by other news sources now, some reports of explosions in Harare - Still not exactly sure what's going on. If it's a coup attempt it hardly seems v organised or particularly successful, might be some muscle flexing and general posturing.

Or optionally it is very well organised and has already achieved it's aims...

Per Reuters

quote:

Just 24 hours after military chief General Constantino Chiwenga threatened to intervene to end a purge of his allies in Mugabe’s ZANU-PF, a Reuters reporter saw armored personnel carriers on main roads around the capital.

Aggressive soldiers told passing cars to keep moving through the darkness. “Don’t try anything funny. Just go,” one barked at Reuters on Harare Drive.

Two hours later, soldiers overran the headquarters of the ZBC, Zimbabwe’s state broadcaster and a principal Mugabe mouthpiece, and ordered staff to leave. Several ZBC workers were manhandled, two members of staff and a human rights activist said.

Shortly afterwards, three explosions rocked the center of the southern African nation’s capital, Reuters witnesses said.

Despite the troops stationed at locations across Harare, there was no word from the military as to the fate of Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s leader of the last 37 years and the self-styled ‘Grand Old Man’ of African politics.

I'm thinking it's a "Mugabe just up and died so everyone is scrambling to grab power without admitting it" sort of coup.

Ahahahaha the man behind the coup? It's apparently former vice president and future president Emmerson Mnangagwa who is taking over, the guy who Mugabe fired 9 days ago to make Grace 's succession more secure.

Mugabe officially detained (though "safe and sound"), Army moving against the G40 faction, finance minister arrested, reports that Mnangawa is flying back into the country - seen some chatter that Grace may indeed be allowed to leave the country.

That's always who it was going to be really - His removal was a pretty big deal and always had allies in the military and among the veterans.

For what its worth I think plenty of people in the international community will be happy to accept that its not a coup if Mugabe makes way for Mnangagwa - he was instrumental in pushing for readmission in the IMF and securing the most recent loan, with some assistance from the UK who have been broadly perceived to prefer him as president (to his detriment within Zimbabwe), and his pitch as being the Deng to Mugabe's Mao has reportedly won him favour from China.

I'd call that a win all round. Grace Mugabe is politically powerless herself and any power she had over internal organisations that could resist the coup flies off with her. I'm sure she managed to embezzle a fair amount of cash but at the cost of avoiding any type of civil conflict it's a price worth paying.

On the one hand, it's not great for an aging African leader to pass power to his wife.

On the other hand, it's not great for the military hardliners he sidelined to do that to take power either.
