I liked the headstock shape until I noticed A.) it's flamed maple B.) the top edge is a slant rather than a straight line. gently caress that. The pickup layout is baffling, although maybe that's just me being vanilla (I like Ps and Js and PJs.)

Dang It Bhabhi! posted:Basses are almost universally ugly. Wrong. So here's a question: do I buy a hybrid Shen that I've already played in person, know I really like it just as it sits, that I can just drive over the bridge and pick it up from a local bass specialist who I can rely on for support, OR do I order an equivalent Upton Standard Hybrid that I've never laid hands on, have to ship it across the length of the country, will take six months to get, might arrive with a setup that needs tweaking BUT is the bass I've been planning on getting and is made in the USA instead of China (which is something I do care about when I'm spending thousands of dollars on something.)

My view: if you get the Shen, you'll like it but there will always be that little nagging voice. What if I got the Upton? Would it have more responsiveness in thumb? Would it sing a little bit better on note decay? Would it stay in tune better during humidity changes? Would it be less sensitive to feedback when amplified? Any little thing that isn't perfect on the Shen, you'll wonder if the Upton would do it better. *goes back to his janky plywood upright*

Basically I came down to this reasoning, and you can ultimately call it sappy altruistic bullshit... but I believe it: Shen builds basses because that's their business. Upton builds basses because that's their passion (and it shows). I'm always going to go with the latter if at all possible.

Follow Upton on any social media and it's clear that they have a raging hardon for what they do. It's pretty great to see that.

Hi thread, I'm looking at getting back into playing my bass more and would like any recommendations for good options to plug into PC (windows 10), probably through USB. Seems like it would be a good way to practice and play along with tunes as well as adding cool effects. I had looked at Line6 bass pods ages ago when I was a busted rear end student but now it looks like they don't have those on their website anymore? Anyway nothing too fancy, $100-200 range tops if there is anything worthwhile. Otherwise I can make do with my amp I suppose.

Keep an eye out for a used Avid 11rack. They're getting a little long in the tooth compared to the modern runs of modellers, but it gets the job done nicely and can double for guitar practice and recording.

They’re alright headphones but nothing too fancy (sennheiser open something or others) Way back in the day I had one of those soundblasters that had the interfaces that would fit in a 5.25” pc bay and they had 1/4” jacks, it was great for just noodling around on. My current PC has 1/8” but they are for mics and I’m not sure if they would work with an adapter.

I get a lot of noise in the signal when I go through the line in on both my mobo and dedicated sound card. YMMV so give it a shot. I might be getting one of these at the end of the month: Roland Duo Capture EX I want something that can work with both windows and iOS without too much of a cable nightmare, and I've got a firsthand account of this working with both. The 9v power jack is what sells me on this compared to something else - others will try to pull power from the iPhone which won't supply enough juice to power the device. Even if they have dual usb inputs, I've seen a few reports of other models not playing nice with iOS. I've heard of quality issues and microtransaction nightmares for iRig, and I have a firsthand account of this doing what I want... so hopefully it goes on sale for Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Get a USB recording interface unless you really want to mess around with effects (and I'd recommend getting something like a GT-1B + an interface instead of trying to make a multieffects your interface also.) Focusrite Scarlett is probably your best bet at the low end.

Yeah please get something like a Scarlett Solo. You need an interface. Any other option for plugging into your computer is only going to end in inevitable headaches. Check Reverb and Guitar Center used online deals, they always have cheap Scarletts.

Made me want to listen to Trey Gunn! I have a lot of random questions. Are you using a stereo output? Is the bass mostly set up for tapping? Also why not Chapman Stick/Warr Guitar/etc? I've owned a Chapman Stick and the 5th tuning of the bass side just threw me off too much. I think I was too young to realize that I could just change the tuning, but eh. Also I found it not to be an immediate instrument. You can't just put it on your lap and start plucking away like almost any other instrument.

And actually I need to get this setup really bad, the actions getting a little out of hand on the higher strings. I’ve never tried a Chapman stick but to be honest they don’t interest me very much. I like the bass, I can play it like a normal bass if I want, slap and pop and everything. Plus I’m too stupid to have multiple tunings on one neck.

Today at practice I ran my Darkglass B7K into my T-Max effects return, and the T-Max preamp out into a Sunn Concert Bass. Two tens, two twelves and two fifteens. Ridiculously loud, made me so happy. There was an unplugged fender rumble sitting nearby and playing a low b at volume would cause the pilot light to turn on. Not sure how that's possible but it made it feel even more powerful. My birthday is on Tuesday and I've got a Small Sound/Big Sound Team Awesome Fuzz Machine arriving that day. Tuesday seems so far away.

I bought a Squier bass for 62 dollars last Friday and have already purchased a new bridge and electronics for it that will far exceed the cost of the bass. At least I already had a Rio Grande p bass pickup laying around for it. There is something I really like about top notch hardware on a low end bass guitar.

As long as the frets are solid and the neck allows a good setup, this type of bass just can't be beat for the price. I wouldn't necessarily put a Nordstrand pickup/pre into a Squier, but an upgraded used Squier is really difficult to beat for any comparable price.

Doesn’t play quite as good as my Fender Japan 70’s reissue but it also cost 1/10th the price and I don’t have to worry about sweating/spilling beer on it. I should have got one years ago really.

Dyna Soar posted:i have a MIA fender and it's a completetly different instrument than a squier "Completely different instrument" is a stretch, but no one disputes it's a significantly higher quality version of the same basic thing. For the money, though, the upper-end Squiers are a killer value, especially if you were going to do things like replace pickups and hardware regardless.

my bandmate has a squier w/ changed pickups and bridge and while it's ok it just feels cheap compared to a MIA fender. I'd just shell out the extra few hundred and get a MIA fender used rather than buy a squier and upgrade it.

My Team Awesome Fuzz Machine arrived yesterday. I only got a few moments to try it out but it seems very suitable for all my bass fuzz needs. There's a volume for fuzz and a volume for clean so that you have incredible control over the blend abilities. Between my b7k and a bad monkey (not my favorite but it works) I thought I had a heavy enough tone with plenty of options, but I was totally missing out on crazy sustain and feedback control that a proper fuzz offers. The noise gate and phase toggle are pretty weird, sounds almost like a synth, I'm sure I'll get more familiar with them and understand the usefulness. It's strange having three dirt pedals all, letting go of the strings, and there's just absolute silence.

With that gap at the neck heel I'd wonder about if it'll intonate properly or if the scales work out somehow.

A Sting Ray bass has 21 frets and a square heel, while a Fender has 20 frets and a rounded heel. They both have the same scale, so a properly fit neck (intonation wise) should have a gap.
