I just found out there's a visual novel based on The 39 Steps.

Why didn't anyone tell me about this? Anyone know if its any good?

Technically the latest release by Winged Cloud is traditional fantasy and non-H (just very fanservicey, to the point where it detracts from the standard fantasy story) Not actually recommending.

I don't know if it's quite 'traditional' fantasy, but ENIGMA: is certainly more fantasy than anything else, and you'll find some more traditional fantasy lurking in it if you play far enough. It's not a bad game at all, though I found the eventual endgame slightly unfulfilling and keep wondering if I missed the point, so more people playing it and talking about it would benefit me. http://store.steampowered.com/app/494100/ENIGMA/ on sale for the next two hours. I think it deserves more attention than it's gotten.

Fault Milestone One was okay but I prefer VNs with choices over KNs so I never played beyond that first game.

For a very short free game, The Knife Of The Traitor has very interesting visuals.

I assume Cinderella Phenomenon is fantasy but haven't played it.

Brilliant Shadows probably counts as traditional fantasy? It's a pretty unusual art style for a VN though. http://store.steampowered.com/app/409920/Brilliant_Shadows__Part_One_of_the_Book_of_Gray_Magic/

There's an argument that it maybe doesn't deserve it, but Fault really wants you not to think of it as traditional fantasy. They call it "science fantasy" officially. It doesn't have elves in it, but it does have a bad case of Fantasy Words. It's that kind of fantasy, you know?

Dear SF writers: you don't have to make up your own name for everything. It is okay to call a wizard a wizard.

So I've started on Steins;Gate and it seems really cool so far. The fact that it's fully voiced and the portraits' mouths move is really cool, but god drat I hate how the space bar doesn't advance the text. About how long is it?

Are the dialogue choices in Kindred Spirits on the Roof actual branches, or just for fluff?

Umi is a dense motherfucker and Sasa is throwing herself away on her. The track captains seem cool so far, though. I am rooting for them.

Just fluff but you have to pick both for 100% completion. Which will be a looooong way down the road.

Oh yeah, I forgot about one fantasy VN from Hanako, The Confines of the Crown (which used to be called Royal Trap, with that as a subtitle.) I liked that one a lot. Most of the other fantasy-flavored games from Hanako have stat-raising components and such so aren't quite straightforward VNs, though they're all good.

I bought Clannad a while back when it first came out on steam and only in the last couple days have been giving it time. Very satisfied with it so far, characterization is great and the protagonist is a funny, likeable person. I'm actually kind of on guard because I don't want to be disappointed by any lackluster character arcs.

What routes have you done so far?

Depending upon what you've heard ahead of time and/or what your expectations are you could be in for quite a ride.

Some of the character routes are smaller than others. Some feel like afterthoughts. The main characters all have pretty good stories, though. Clannad (the anime) is what got me into romantic high school VNs. It's pretty good.

Littlewitch Romanesque just got a permanent price drop to $15 on Steam. I have loved this artist ever since the equally beautiful Quartett! (the all-ages PS2 version of course), but for some reason never got around to picking up this.

According to reviews it’s Long Live the Queen meets Princess Maker.

The price drop is in celebration of Eiyu Senki coming out on Steam after being a PS3 exclusive in the US for a while.

Just o you're aware, some of the art for the skills you learn has some pantyshots, which is less-than-okay if you learn them early when the girls are like fifteen.

Is the thing about Kaede having a twin sister just totally never addressed at all? Did I miss another reference to that?

Also, why couldn't Tsumugi cosplay as Kaede if all contestants are fictional characters?

Overall probably my least favorite one. Some of the cases were interesting. 5.5/10 I guess?

I was happy to finish it so I can get to Mario though.

It's a fun game if you don't mind a bunch of fanservice involving very young-looking girls (toned down from the 18+ original, which even outside of the H-scenes had panties and nude shots all over the place. MOST of that is cut or redrawn in this version but not all), but that X meets Y description will get a lot of hopes up about the game being something it's not.

Overly lengthy description: It's a child-raising game merged with a dating sim, which looks like it might have RPG elements but doesn't actually. You play a male protagonist wizard who is assigned responsibility for two young girls. You boost their stats by playing a dice-rolling game to build up points to unlock spells. Unlocking a spell gives you a little cutscene explaining what that spell does in-world (which may lead to a cute/fanservice CG) and also gives you special bonus powers you can use in the dice-rolling game to unlock further spells even faster.

You can also choose to play events instead of training. In order to play an event, you must have all the spells that will be used in the event, it is not possible to 'fail' inside an event. The events may describe wandering around in a dungeon or fighting a dragon or something, but it's all VN-style narration, no actual walkaround or combat or picking what spell to use. There are no choices or other gameplay inside these events at all, it's just a story.

Which events you choose to pursue will help you build up points towards various different endings, including the romantic relationship endings. Yes, there are endings for both the young girls you are training (though since you only get their endings in year 3, if you assume they were 15 to start with, they would be 18 then), there are also endings for many other female characters who show up during the course of the story. Getting a romance ending stops the raising-sim part in its tracks. Only if you avoid all the romance options do you actually get the "here are the careers your students learned" kind of princess-maker style endings.

If that all sounds fine to you it's definitely worth $15, it's packed full of content and takes many playthroughs just to achieve the dating ends, much less a true 100%. But the eroge framework is still evident and affects the game design.

The Kaede sister thing was a ruse to push the narrative that the twist was the same as the first game. Tsumugi conveniently "found" that document.

The fact that Tsumugi can't cosplay as Kaede supports Shuichi's position that they are not fictional but actually real.

DRV3: Dangan Ronpa started off as a series of games and anime (like it is in the real world) then at some point made the transition to being a reality TV show with brainwashing. One clue for this before the final reveal was in the detective lab - there were a bunch of pictures of murder victims, and the earlier ones were just drawings. Those were actually pictures of all the Dangan Ronpa victims.

Neko Jishi first hour trip report:

The art is really good if you don't have some kind of furry phobia, though sometimes it's jarring when the little avatar faces don't match the faces on the full-body models. Still, sometimes the full-body models have unique faces too so I don't think they skimped on the art.

The translation is pretty solid aside from a few spelling errors. The grammar seems pretty native at times, and it's not hard to read. What's especially impressive is how easy to read the several-paragraph-long lore and culture glossary explanations are.

Which brings me to the main point: holy cow is this game dripping with cultural lore from China. Like, the plot itself is mostly just a self-insert furry fantasy where a gay college student who likes furries is visited by the three cat-guys of his dreams, but every other line they drop some term or reference that turns out to be some religious concept or bit of obscure aboriginal folklore. It's absolutely fascinating. I guess come for the hot tigers, stay for the Chinese culture lessons?

Also the main character's hobby is participating in traditional aboriginal dances, which is really cool. More VNs need leads that are traditional dancers.
