While I think they're equally reprehensible, I think there is a meaningful difference in the pathology and aetiology of pedophilia and ephebophile. I can't say I've ever met or seriously read about someone belonging to the former category, but I have faint memories of reading a case study once about someone belonging to the latter category. In there case, the person had never acted on it, but it absolutely was a fetish of sorts. It was something the person fixated on because, as they explained it, they were a virgin until adulthood. They felt they had been cheated out of what they perceived as 'normal' stages of sexual development in high school, and kind of fixated on that and felt entitled to it. Beyond that case study, I can see how this is especially difficult for someone to deal with. According to research in a seminar by Steven Gaulin I attended recently, evolutionary and cultural pressures of male sexual selection hold up, as an ideal, a waist-to-hip ratio that is most typical of 16-year old girls. This seminar was kind of gross because of the language and vocabulary he used to describe women (Referring to them as 'ripe' and even making a 'don't call the cops' joke; it was bad enough we had a departmental meeting about this afterward), but I couldn't find a flaw in the empirical work itself. I invite someone who knows better to correct me on this, but I believe pedophilia has stronger roots in power fetishization than your average ephebophile. I have some background in sexual psychology, but not abnormal. Edit: Bottom line, I'm all for imprisoning both pedophiles and ephebophiles who are at a danger of acting on their urges- but I believe all effort must be taken to rehabilitate these individuals. The evo psych side of things is really bizarre because in the same lecture Dr. Gaulin also pointed out that the idealized female body type is neither the most healthy nor the most fertile. Still kind of weird that he discussed women's bodies as if they were passive entities acted upon by male choice with no input of their own... Note: Anytime I discuss evopsych, I do so from a descriptive standpoint, not a prescriptive or predictive one. I think it's fine to talk about the evolutionary pressures and preferences that shaped who we are, as long as we don't fall headlong into the 'is-ough' trap and start believing evolutionary psychology tells us how we ought to behave- or what is moral or correct behaviour. I'm not an evopsych, but some of my colleagues are, and thank God they take ample care to emphasize the philosophy of the 'is-ought' problem.
