I'm so annoyed by this. Nintendo has some of the most valuable, untapped IPs ever, and they're choosing to make an animated film with their flagship character via the near-bottom rung of animation studios.

The 1993 Super Mario Bros movie really spooked them. The upcoming Detective Pikachu film will be the first 'live action' Nintendo film they've signed off on in a quarter century.

my favorite way to describe it is that the live action Mario movie is like if a 50 year old in 1992 listened to their 10 year old nephew describe all of the stuff in the mario games and they went and made a movie entirely based off of that description without looking at a single actual Mario game.

So what your saying is it was made by your uncle not at Nintendo

Yeah but that makes even less sense. I could see them going with Dreamworks, which makes occasional non-trash, but no one's excited for the next Illumination film.

My best guess as to what happened is that Dreamworks would have ideas about how the film should be done, Illumination will just roll over and obey every order to the letter without question.

I think we should call the Avengers.

I'm absolutely sure no one will be even remotely interested in a Nintendo film made by Illumination. Nope, can't think of a single person of any age group on this planet for whom this would possibly merit some excitement.

I was surprised what an accurate impression the trailer gave of the movie, but I expected it to be just middling instead of terrible.

I went in to Loving Vincent knowing basically nothing about the painter and expecting the film to rest entirely on the (very cool!) stunt of painting everything. When I came out of it I was pleasantly surprised that there was some semblance of story.

Now I’m wondering if they’d have been better off without. Another victory for low expectations.

I think a big thing with mario is that in animation he's not really a sacred property.

Like he's was in 5 extremely low quality US cartoons. And who knows how many anime versions. Like nintendo seems extremely not shy about mario cartoons and making them big prestige things doesn't seem like a priority. Like King Koopa's Kool Kartoons was not a thing nintendo worried about their brand for.

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

Yeah, by 1994 standards, the Mario cartoons is about the same quality as all other video game cartoon adaptations (Darkstalkers, Street Fighters, Mega Man, Zelda): Terrible by today's standards, but passable for the time - hell it got one up on Darkstalkers by not completely butchering what little characterization they had.

I think Nintendo would expect much higher quality now.
