With that beard, Trent is a pair of sunglasses away from looking a hell of a lot like E (Mark Oliver Everett) from eels. Not a bad thing! gently caress, I'd love to hear a NIN-eels collaboration, or mash-up.

Not that it's surprising, but it's still kind of a shame that despite his relationship with Bowie, and championing bands like DEP, he's not finding new stuff to listen to. There's so much great stuff out there, hearing that he's fallen into relying on the old classics is a little disappointing.

I know I'm being incredibly pedantic, but being on vinyl doesn't make it an LP, so I don't get why they keep calling it that. Obviously this means side B is a surprise release of part 3 of the trilogy

Yep but the tweet said the new LP is available to purchase, and it's literally an LP. So it's not wrong. The fact that people use LP to mean something else is irrelevant, it was used correctly here.

Yeah, never mind. I actually didn't realize how specific the terminology was. It's still a bit confusing because they've referred to it as an EP until now. It does raise the question of why they're pressing it as one side of an LP rather than a 2-sided EP. I don't know if that's harder to do for some reason? They did it for the first How To Destroy Angels release.

I imagine its probably cheaper to press a 12" these days.

It has nothing to do with the length of material recorded onto it. No, by definition it means "long play." An "extended play" can also fit on a 10" or 12" vinyl record and play at 33.3 rpm. This terminology predates CDs and digital. Both of those terms are derived in opposition to a single, which is, well, a single song on one record (not counting the B side). It has absolutely everything to do with the length of material recorded onto it. Actual content: I bought two of the Deviations sets around this time last year because they were billed as being limited one-time only pressings, and there they sit in stock. And it turns out the music that is on them is not nearly as exciting as I had hoped. I'm the nerd. 1000 umbrellas fucked around with this message at 16:14 on Nov 18, 2017 |

This terminology predates CDs and digital. originally the EP was specifically a type of 7" record that could have a longer playtime than a 7" single due to having narrower grooves, and thus contain multiple songs. it was invented to compete with LP's and in some cases the same album would just be divided up differently using more discs. so at first the terminology "LP" and "EP" did indeed refer to distinct physical formats, later it evolved to be more about a specific length of recording when they would take "EP" length recordings and release them on LP discs and vice verca

Glad I don't have to -rage in here about "album" and "vinyl" being used interchangeably. Or commercials in the early '00s proclaiming "now available on video and DVD."

Hell yeah, the Song Exploder podcast will be going over a NIN song next week. https://twitter.com/SongExploder/status/935970834866417664 For those who haven't listened, it's basically an interview with an artist about one of their songs and usually includes clips of isolated parts of the song and sometimes demo stuff.

Sounds cool. I'd honestly rather him go over earlier stuff in his catalog, but obviously it'll be something he's done with Atticus. Broken would be an interesting album to hear ripped apart.

More NIN-adjacent, but I saw Telefon Tel Aviv and Second Woman (Josh Eustis' side project) live the other night. Imagine your brain being converted into digital samples, placed on a cutting board and sliced into pieces and then the pieces being run through a washing machine and that's what Second Woman sounds like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh3KuqhG9Ig The visuals were loving crazy too. So many strobes that my brain took a beating, but man it was cool while it was happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bdA4cVGS6g

It's also kinda refreshing to hear him talk about addiction again, I feel like he hadn't touched on it directly much since With Teeth. It's a neat episode, sub-25 minutes.
