Quad posted:So, ok, there's about 1,000 anime visual novel games on Steam. The "good" ones rely so heavily on existing anime cliches and weeaboo/otaku culture that they have almost zero crossover appeal to anyone who isn't already an unironic fan of them to begin with. And they still usually have gross sex stuff in them because you have to if you want anything to sell. Other than that it's just wackety-shmackety "dating sim only instead of dating girls you're dating things that aren't girls" ironic novelty dating sims that are rapidly becoming just as much of a low-effort plague as the real thing and a few glorified creepypastas.

The latter is free and neither of them has gross porn/smut to get in the way of telling a good story with endearing characters. Also Butterfly Soup is legit very funny in a 'embarrass yourself in public busting a gut' kinda way. That's my (sorta) anime visual novel recommendation. I guess it might not count if you mean only japanese VNs.

How much gameplay and cutscenes does a visual novel get to have before it's not a visual novel. I've seen Ace Attourney, the Nonary Games, and Dangan Ronpa get called Visual Novels.

I try to think of what I'd really want to experience in a VN and the answer that comes out of the process winds up being Blow's The Witness. I guess I'm not the target demographic. Even the non-porn VNs seem to be proxy dating sims 99% of the time.

I'm generally not into visual novels whatsoever but I ended up finding Love At First Sight to be endearing as a short, cheap VN with a neat art style and I can't really think of a good way to put it but it felt kinda like it was a visual novel that was made for me. It's like that junji ito holes thing where somehow I was pulled to this one particular visual novel and ended up enjoying it a lot.

You know that part in NieR: Automata, where there's a lot of text on screen and you sometimes get to choose between two things? That's a VN. It's NieR: Automata

That's still different. That's stolen assets to make what they wanted. It just ended up being horrible. Asset flips are straight 1% effort jobs in order to scam money. There's no love or good intent in there.

Is there even any actual point to achievements on Steam? Like, do you get something you can show off to people? Or points? I've got like 400 games on my drat account and I've never even checked.

I think you can put them in a showcase on your profile so if a game decides to, say, have tons and tons and tons of achievements where the picture for it is a letter of the alphabet, then someone could use that to spell something out on their page. Or that one game where the achievements were all of various my little pony characters so bronies would buy the game and display their favorites on their profile, or the games that have memes as the achievement icons so people can put meme pics on their steam profile. Of course, that all goes out the window if I'm not recalling correctly and you can't actually display the achievements.

NEW_ACHIEVEMENT_NAME_8_30 They don't even bother naming their achievements and poo poo. Steam should actively have a group of guys who monitor the storefront exclusively for asset flips at this point. There's at least one every single release day. Literally.
