Old Town Road to EGOT

TheIndividual posted:

Every song, barring the last one, has the same awful pseudo-trap production with the clicky hi-hat rolls and everything. It sounds awful, and could have come from anyone. She has no personality of her own on this thing, and her idiosyncrasies were what made her earlier albums good.
So every song sounds like Look What You Made Me Do? Hard pass

Sorry but Dress is really good. I think the whole album is solid, a few more listens and I’ll decide how good it is.

This release is confusing me.

I get that she'd rather push sales than streams and I'm happy to help her there, but they also seem to be pushing it on loving CD format? The only place I can find it for digital download is iTunes, and since I don't own an apple device I'd be stuck spending my money on and then extricating it from the worst piece of desktop software in the world. Outside of that, amazon have the CD but unlike most things they don't also give the mp3 version, I assume because that would mix it in with their streaming service. If I did buy that, I'd also have to wait for shipping, and I don't actually know anywhere around here that does CDs except discounted racks of Now Thats What I Call Summer Hits 2014 and Guns N Roses Greatest Hits, and even after getting my hands on the CD I've got the thorny issue of having decided I probably didn't need a CD player because it's loving 2017.

Is my situation way more specific than I think? Is there a distribution channel I'm missing? Is this just a weirdly limited release?

while we're on Taylor Watch, here's a Rolling Stone article where some dude who really likes Taylor ranks 115 of her songs. It was written a few weeks ago, so the only Reputation songs it has are the first two singles, but the list itself is... alright. His top ten is:

1. All Too Well
2. New Romantics
3. Long Live
4. Blank Space
5. We Are Never Getting Back Together
6. Dear John
7. Holy Ground
8. Clean
9. Red
10. Our Song

which is missing a bunch of stone-cold classics.

The correct list, for those at home is:

1. Style
2. Enchanted
3. Mean
4. Long Live
5. New Romantics (but +3 if it's this awesome mashup of New Romantics and I Really Like You)
6. Mine
7. You Belong With Me
8. Sparks Fly
9. Red
10. Love Story

The objective criteria are how many times I've listened to them, how easy they are to belt out when I'm alone in my car, how much they make me feel like I'm 15 again, and emotional content.

Stoked to see someone put Clean in their top 10. I love that track. I haven't listened to Reputation yet, haven't liked any of the singles and having to put more effort in than opening Spotify to hear it is... nah.

Isn't this the kind of album that will have end cap displays at Walmart and target? Do you only have a dollar general in your town, or something?

I'm from the middle of nowhere, england. Even the towns within convenient travel distance don't have proper supermarkets.

Well it's hard to call an album that could well sell 2 million copies in one week a limited release but yes it's very unusual to be pushing the physical format so hard like this. It will be on streaming sometime in the coming weeks though

My guess is she made a deal w/Apple because it's streaming restricted for the first week. Expect if available on spotify/google/other platforms next week.

It’s a weird deal with Apple nonetheless.

Digital distribution via iTunes Store but not on Apple Music (as per the one week streaming restriction)

She'll make more like 20x more selling albums on iTunes than from streaming.

I listened to the songs that are available on Spotify and couldn’t get past the first chorus on any of them. Garbage quality.

Any new, decent music from the last month or so that people are excited about?

The new Willow Smith album is pretty dope and if you haven't already listened to Rainbow then what the gently caress are you doing.

New EP from The Midnight that straddles the line between pop and synthwave, if you didn’t check out Miami Garden Club by Kitty it’s very awesome as well.

the best paragraph I've read about Reputation, courtesy of The Ringer

quote:

There are a few Reputation songs, like “Dress,” that are genuinely sensual. And then there are a few songs that remind me of that Lonely Island video in which someone flies a plane to spell out in big letters in the sky, “I JUST HAD SEX.”

edit: also a reminder that you should go back and listen to all of the Lonely Island albums again because it's been too long probably. those are classics of funny music that are also just good music.

If this leads to Swift actually singing a cover of I Just Had Sex, it will be worth it.

some of those songs are like how a 15 year old girl imagines sex is when you're in your late 20s. I think "taylor swift still secretly a virgin" is a much funnier T-Swizz conspiracy theory than "taylor swift secretly a nazi"

Okay, apparently people like it.

I thought it sounded very petulant and whiny and the line about her boyfriend gives off a creepy adulterous vibe that is really weird in a song that's basically "holy gently caress you're hot".

Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Jimmy T.
I like Call It What You Want off the new album a lot, it reminds me a lot of the “catchiness” and melodies in 1989 with some different production. Haven’t been too thrilled with the other songs I have heard so far.

I read a comment elsewhere saying that the song becomes better if you believe Swift is singing about Karlie Kloss. And also if you imagine Dress is directed towards another woman.
