Gouache looks like a great tool but I have no idea what I'm doing.

Dog Nougat - I like the logo and concept but maybe there's too much space between the L and the apostrophe.

slightly amused
So here's a bit of a weird question; does anyone else feel anxious when they aren't drawing something? I don't mean actively drawing at any given moment, but rather just having some kind of project sitting on the backburner. I've been doing a lot more drawing this month and everytime i finish a piece, I start feeling anxious and want to begin work on another. Even if I only do some extremely light sketch for 10 minutes before doing other stuff, it just feels good to have something in place I know I'm going to be moving forward with.

Its strange cause I definitely never felt this way in the past. Finishing a piece used to mentally exhaust me completely.

That kekistani fighter is great but makes me :smith:.

Here are some good resources about gouache:

Books
Painting in Opaque Watercolor by Rudy de Reyna
Gouache for Illustration by Rob Howard

Videos (on Gumroad)
Gouache in the Wild by James Gurney
The Thomas Blackshear Illustration Masters Course

If you can do watercolor, gouache is infinitely easier because you can remove it and rework it after it dries.

Here is a watercolor painting, I touched it up a bit in Procreate:

I make jewelry as a hobby, have for a decade, but much prefer drawing which I started to do a couple years ago when I found a way to combine them. I made the card, earrings (gold fill and tourmaline) and drew the Christmas tree branch with eyeliner.

Hey thread. I got an Apple Pen a couple of months ago for boring non-art stuff but since then I've ended up spending quite a bit of time with Procreate. Never really tried to draw anything properly before, turns out it's kind of fun. :)

Here's a first attempt at drawing a head from an angle. I have no idea if it's all wonky after having stared at it for hours, so feel free to tell me!

Starting another mural across the street from the old one. This one is at a brewery called Amber Ox. Only have a very small window to finish this one however. Had to put the final touches on hold for the last one in order to have the time to finish this one before they open.

Here is the other one ATM.

The arm / elbow still needs muscle tone and the bracelet needs to be fixed. Upper right corner of mandala is off a bit too.

Also - though unrelated. Does anyone have any strong feelings of the new line of Cintiqs (mobile studio) vs. the Cintiq companion?

Lastly. does anyone know of any wacom Black Friday sales for er.... the above mentioned Cintiq models?

This will only hurt once. Use the magic "flip the image" trick to reveal...

..the illusion of the Escaping Eye. Flipping your image is the easiest way to quickly reveal where you've gone "blind" to a pic you've been working on for a long time.
It's the most common thing to get wonky on a face, everyone does it every now and then. Other than that, there's something I can't quite put my finger on with the lips, but good job for your first go nonetheless.

sinc
Jul 6, 2008
Hah, that's a great trick, I can see what you mean. Need to use it sparingly though, because you soon go blind to the mirror version too. The lips are the part I wasn't too happy with also. Thanks for the feedback both!

I guess then the trick is to lay down the features fast enough in an underdrawing-sketching phase, before you get too blind and committed to fix the positions and expression anymore.

The two big things that stick out:
  • The nose is too flat on the face for the perspective. At a 3/4th view, it should have a more direct curve that pushes it out closer to the cheek.
  • The lips don't appear to be curving around the cylinder of the mouth.
