yea that's a lot less funny internet safari and a lot more 'oh these guys just figured out a hack to get child porn for their extremely specific fetishes and there's really no way to make a law against saying 'hey can I see your feet' so they just kinda get away with it until they become TOO overtly predatory'.

Getting back on topic, this was a great episode. Zarla's point about the banality of the themes was something that really stuck out to me in this one and the last one. Like Lemon said, these people are turning what should be a celebration with friends and family into a production for its own sake, and what's driving this enormous labor is, what, Star Wars? Marvel movies? How is such a massive, hyper-exposed, pop-culture-saturating media property personal enough to these people that they spend thousands of dollars to make a show of how much it defines them as a couple? Liking Star Wars is about as personally distinguishing as breathing air.

I'm not saying that it would make these weddings good if they had more niche themes, but I'd at least have a clearer sense of the motivation behind them.

it's crow time again

There's a wedding or two in there with hints of that. There was an offhand mention of The Tempest as a theme, and I thought, y'know, Shakespeare wedding would be dorky but not actually unpleasant.

On the other hand, they did that one Star Wars Expanded Universe wedding, and that was just as awful as the other ones, so yeah, making the referent more obscure doesn't make it less obnoxious.

I think they mentioned this in the bumper of the previous wedding episode, but there's this weird conflict in these people's motivations. It's clear they want to rebel against their perception of a wedding. They're too unique, too interesting to wear a suit and a dress and stand in front of a guy and say "I do," then go and have drinks. But at the same time, they can't think outside of their own view of what a wedding 'is'. So they replace the trappings--instead of a suit everyone dresses up as Worf and wears Sketchers! We quote movies for our vows! And that officiant was Albert Einstein!--but they're still having a god drat wedding.

It could very well just be that it's selection bias. It's a site where people post about weddings, and we're hearing the most insufferable bits. It just feels like these people want so badly to prove that they're not boring that they end up revealing that they are boring as poo poo.

Aren't we talking specifically about the insufferable people? That's not selection bias; that's the identity property.

My wife's nerdy cousin was going to have a heavily-themed multi-day hangout to demonstrate Geek Social Fallacy #4, basically. Her parents (and maybe her fiance's parents, maybe some sane friends) got through to her before it was too late, though. I had mixed feelings because I've never been to a real wedding disaster but it was a nice wedding / reception in the end.

Oh yea there are tons of ways to do 'nerdy' weddings without being monsters. I said this on Ballpit but I was just at a wedding where the wedding was normal but the reception was Star Trek themed. It was cute, they had a custom drink menu, photo booths that had little Trek poo poo in them, stuff like tribble centerpieces and all. It was cute, and we all went 'aw, that's sweet they both love Star Trek' and it was fun for us other nerds. They didn't have a twenty minute Klingon vow exchange while we sat awkwardly around it.

It's the difference between 'we both like this thing, and know a lot of our friends do too, so let's have some fun to make our wedding more unique' and 'we made this our entire identity'

Over a decade on this forum has ruined me for terrible themed wedding content. My reaction to "Steampunk Wedding" was "Oh, another one?"

Pretty much, its corporate branding by stealth. People think they're being giant nerds but they're just recasting a ceremony in popular brands [of geek culture]. Something you expect to see on an episode of BBT.

Really selfish nerds. That's what bugs me most about the whole thing, a wedding is supposed to be a nice time for one's friends and family, not a venue to show off how quirky/geeky you are. Just like the one lady's grandma who commented on how weird it was and she took that as a compliment. You don't have to cater to everyone's needs, but if you and your husband are the only people out of 200 who know what the hell steampunk or Mass Effect is maaaaybe don't make it the entire theme of your wedding?

A former friend of mine and his awful fiance had a terrible geek themed wedding that would have been right at home in this episode. I told them I was sick and couldn't go, instead I looked after their cat and drunk all weekend instead.
I feel like I made the correct choice.

The problem isn’t “fake nerds” the problem is that nerdom itself is all about worshipping intellectual property and absorbing it to an extent that it becomes your whole life, which makes you a mark for anything branded with that trademark. Instead of something being part of your personality, you’re basically an extended support and marketing tool for a multi-billion dollar media company.

people being unable to form identities or live their lives without references/fandoms to some sort of genre fiction/fiction for young adults (it's ALWAYS either or) really creeps me out. I can't say there's any like, fictional book or TV or movie series that I LOVE SO MUCH that it's like THIS IS PART OF MY IDENTITY. THIS IS PART OF WHO I AM. creepy

I figured it out. It's social. You're not into Harry Potter, you're into being into Harry Potter. Because being into Harry Potter is something that enough people do that they form a community of practice, which raises that practice (being into Harry Potter) into something far more significant than if you're just reading the books for yourself. It becomes an identity for the group instead of an individual activity, and if you join that group, congratulations, it's your identity too. So now being into Harry Potter is something that you strengthen in order to define yourself, and then you're putting the Sorting Hat on Aunt Linda so she can be in the right House for the reception.

I think weddings are about the bridge and groom but not necessarily for them. Like, if something's important to you it's fair game to include it however weird and nerdy it is, but if you've got all your family and friends joining in it's disrespectful to turn it into something they don't understand or enjoy and therefore can't participate in. It's selfish. These are kind of the nerd equivalent to destination weddings, where instead of wasting money on a hotel in cyprus they've got to buy monocles and sit there while you recite poems from the Hobbit that you translated in to Klingon.

Completely separately, which is the episode where Portaxx makes a Public Enemy reference? The exchange has been stuck in my head for a week and I can't find it.
