SealHammer posted:wtf no a better solution would be to jail them and mandate that they attend rehab sessions so that they can learn how to quit being a danger to everyone around them lmao you can't force someone to go through rehab. you can make them attend (rehab or some alcohol abuse / divergence program) but you can't make them change if they dont want to. this is in fact what most dui penalties include and it doesn't work often enough to preclude the use of interlocks it's kind of nuts how many goons pop up advocating youtube comment level solutions to complex issues simply because they don't understand the whats and whys of the penalties already in place SealHammer posted:the key word there is rehab my willfully ignorant friend yeah sorry man most states already do this, and it doesn't work turns out california makes you attend an alcohol program after your first dui. and your second, and your third...

Programs like AA have a success rate that's indistinguishable from spontaneous remission. You can give people behavioral intervention, family therapy, CBT, whatever, and it's not even as good as placebo combined with a brief intervention. It has no measurable efficacy at getting people to stop using.

Dude running into frame is almost certainly the flag guy who was supposed to be spotting and protecting the rear of the train as it crossed the gravel road. There's a lot of wrong poo poo going on here and everyone involved is (should be) hosed. Train was also going way too fast, backing up with no rear light, at night, through an unprotected level crossing. It's supposed to move back slowly at a pace that the flag guy can keep up and radio/signal if the train needs to stop for a crazy reason like a dump truck barreling down the road. But this looks like some big industrial site and everyone involved has done this move a million times and just wants to get it done fast.

A funny anecdote about this, my primary care physician does hypnosis specifically to deal with smokers, the people he typically does this with have tried a lot of other methods and failed, but they do want to change. His success rate is extremely high, he said somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-70%, but he did note the fact that it wasn't necessarily the hypnosis, rather that at the point in their lives that they were willing to try it, they REALLY did want to change and were ready for it, he just gave them an extra push in the right direction.

How would rehab in this situation operate in a practical sense though? Obviously rehabilitation is the ideal situation to the problem, but what do you do to stop people from driving drunk until the rehab is complete?

Wait this is the osha thread. Hmmm. Did I ever mention that my grandpa made a upright trash compactor from various leftover parts and might have to disassemble it because it's started compacting on it's own due to the hoses leaking or something. Nearly ate someone's hand apparently, because there's bubbles in the lines so the plunger thing that crushes the material inside would start and stop moving very abruptly, without warning. There's no emergency stop, and it used to take a few seconds to come to a complete stop as well. Also the controls are around the side so good luck operating it in a blind panic!

Glad we can solve drunk driving in the OSHA thread because we can then apply the solution to the actual OSHA problem. Which is working a double shift or working a graveyard without sleeping during the day leaves most people at a fatigue level where their driving skills are equivalent to somewhere between tipsy and drunk.

Got one for the Psuedoscience thread and OSHA! Man insists Earth is flat, builds rocket with intent to launch self into the atmosflat and return with photographic proof" Dateline California Mike Hughes of California announced the first phase of his flat-earth space program: A manned flight to 1,800 feet to gather photographic proof, and shatter the lies of the ball earth conspiracies. The cutting edge of flat-earth research technology, Hughes' steam powered rocket will launch from a 'heavily modified mobile home', carrying him a mile over the beautiful Mojave Desert, and return with undeniable proof of the disk's true form. No stranger to the pilot's seat, Hughes is fully recovered from his 2014 flight, which left him in a walker for 2 weeks. "It's scary as hell."-Mike Hughes

I get a feeling the dude just likes to ride rockets and got some flat earthers to pay for it. I mean, we have BUILDINGS taller than his rocket is going to fly.

If you read the bottom bits of the article, it becomes clear that he just wants to launch himself in home made rockets like the hillbilly version of Copenhagen Suborbitals. His conversion to flat-eartherism was a recent event, in an unsuccessful attempt at drumming up support for his kickstarter.
