Hihohe posted:cool how do we ban him from the rest of the countries. The area of Bir Tawil is unique in that it is unclaimed by any sovereign nation. It's also a 40-mile stretch of sun-blasted hellscape. Perfect, I feel. quote:In 1899, when the United Kingdom held authority in the area, the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium Agreement for Sudan set the border between the territories at the 22nd parallel. However, in 1902 the UK drew a separate "administrative boundary", intended to reflect the actual use of the land by the tribes in the region. Bir Tawil was grazing land used by the Ababda tribe based near Aswan, and thus was placed under Egyptian administration from Cairo. Similarly, the Hala'ib Triangle to the northeast was placed under the British governor of Sudan, because its inhabitants were culturally closer to Khartoum.

And if an avenue of investigation or enforcement is found, then we will most definitely pursue it." In his full correspondence, Strategic Analyst Wolfe dropped this in which I found funny: quote:For me, instead of playing certain Star Wars games I was looking forward to, I will be concerting my efforts on collecting EVERY.SINGLE.MOON in Odyssey. But yeah. Suck all the dicks EA.

Konami really hosed up by getting out of the video game business and into the gambling business. They should have just paid off legislators to legalize loot crate gambling and exploiting that. Oh well, maybe deep pockets EA will figure it out.

Trauma Dog 3000 posted:the real 'freude is on gamers when the legislation about game mechanics starts But they aren't talking about the mechanics. They're talking about buying a full price AAA title and getting bled dry of either time or money or both to unlock the most iconic characters in the franchise. It's like 40 hours of game time just dedicated to getting those characters, ignoring any other progression in the game. Or a few thousand dollars. That would be analogous to buying a Zaxxon cabinet (sue me, I *loved* that game) but still having to pump quarters in to play. Then Sega comes to collect them every week. I'm not a "gamer" by any stretch. Hell, the last game I played was Witcher3 on Easy. But EA is definitely being predatory here.

Actually, the big objection is not that they're selling pay-to-win garbage. Regulators would be generally fine with that - while you as a consumer would be an idiot to buy it, you know going in what it's about, so it's really your own drat fault. Not that much different to Train Simulator having thousands of dollars of DLC. The big problem is that they're selling lottery tickets. To minors.

As I understand, the "loot crate" mechanic is being investigated as gambling because you buy the crates with real money (actually "crystals", in-game currency bought with real money, but same difference), but the contents are random; and among those contents can be "credits", another in-game currency that's used to buy upgrades and more crates (a crate costs 200 crystals or 4000 credits, so the exchange rate is 20 credits for one crystal). And since if you already have an item when you find it in a crate it's directly converted to credits, the system works like a slot machine: put a certain amount of money in it, get X (unknown value) money back. Literally gambling. Which is illegal to do in most countries unless you are specifically licensed. Mikl has a new favorite as of 09:05 on Nov 23, 2017 |

Pokemon ended up removing the slot machine and gambling minigames because it was pushing up the games rating in some countries for gambling references. (there's even a reference to this in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, implying that the Game Corner was recently shut down because of new laws and the former owner gives away the remaining prizes) Not surprising that when companies get too greedy with loot boxes lawmakers eventually start taking notice and realise they're priming kids on gambling with no oversight.

Yeah, the prosecution didn’t “drop” the hate-crime charges, they upgraded to aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping, which carry much heavier penalties. (Bonus: Blair Cottrell is the leader of the ultra-right-wing United Patriots Front in Australia, and is up in arms about the hate crime charges being “dropped” because HE was convicted under hate-crime legislation in September.)
