so about ten years ago, i guess, i was in Smiths Old Bar with some buddies. there were some vietnamese gangbangers shooting pool and filling the early era internet connected jukebox with 80s hair metal. it was the kind of machine you could pay extra to bump things to the top of the queue. one of my friends went up to the machine and came back. alice's restaurant came on after pantera. a look of confusion came over the gangbangers, then annoyance, then confusion again as the song did not end. about three minutes before it ended the guy who put it on said, "guys, we've got to leave. don't worry about paying. i'll cover you. just get out the door." walking back to the car i heard alice's restaurant come on again. it was a magical moment.

it's hard to see them all at once for an extended period. super interesting how you need to parse the image differently to see it.

eh, i can see all 16 at once and hold them there no problem maybe it's some kind of brain test, like that one where you tell someone to picture a rose in their head, and then flip it around and look at the other side, turn it to see the bottom of the stem, down into the blossom, etc. i have always been able to do that easily but apparently some people can't do that sort of mental transformation at all. weird brain stuff.

here's a cool article about a syndrome, which apparently affects up to 2% of the population, where a person is unable to create a visual mental "picture" of a concept. you ask them to picture a sunny beach and they'll be able to tell you it has sand, there are waves, it's hot, the tides go in and out, etc. but they don't see a scene. http://www.exeter.ac.uk/news/research/title_467790_en.html quote:Dame Gill Morgan, from Devon in South West England, made contact with Professor Zeman as a result of this coverage. The Chair of NHS Providers first realised that her ability to conjure a mental picture differed from her peers during management training in her 20s. She said: “We were told to ‘visualise a sunrise’, and I thought ‘what on Earth does that look like’ – I couldn’t picture it at all. I could describe it – I could tell you that the sun comes up over the horizon and the sky changes colour as it gets lighter, but I can’t actually see that image in my mind.” weiiiiird

Can you describe how you flip back and forth? That was the thing tripping me out, like what type of a process am I doing in my head. And if you can't see them, try tilting your monitor down and looking at an angle.

Improbable Lobster posted:i have that sucks to be you! but seriously it's kinda fascinating that that condition exists, since it's so fundamental to how my brain works (like, i doubt i could be a designer if i couldn't come up with a visual image of an idea in my head) but clearly causes no major problems for people who have it there's a similar condition that affects a similar number of people where they can't hear music. like they can hear it, but just as random noises like a casino floor or a loud cafeteria or whatever. no ability to distinguish the patterns and sequences that we call music. they also can't hum a tune or tell you which of two notes played is higher or lower
