EoRaptor posted:

The master sword one was added sometime in the v-twenty something's, I think. I'm going to comment for people who aren't following this very closely; the logic that generates open mode randomizer roms is the same logic used for entrance shuffle, keysanity, ohko, and other modes. That means there are certain assumptions the logic is working under that may not always apply to all players, or that players don't even know about.

The easiest to explain is ohko, or One Hit Knock Out mode (you die if you take any damage). For this type of randomizer mode to work, the logic has to make sure the player is never required to take damage to advance the game. Thus, you will never get a seed where something you need is beyond a spike floor without a protection item (cape or cane of byrna) being available somewhere. This applies even to tiny spike floors, like the one in Misery Mire, or the one in Ice Palace (though the hookshot works for that one).

The randomizer tournament we have been talking about isn't doing ohko, but those protection items will still be placed before any sort of unavoidable damage. It's why you might see cape very early on, but it never seems to get used, because the players don't need care about a few hearts of damage, and will preserve their magic for offensive or puzzle solving uses.

That's why there is still development work ongoing. It's not only about preventing unsolvable dungeons or routing traps (or sprites), but also about adjusting to logic to refine what gets applied in each different mode, so unneeded restrictions can be lifted and more varied item placement and routing can be generated/used whenever possible.

Thank you for this.

This was the first LTTP randomizer I heard of even, and I didn't really know Speedrunning was a thing. Since a few pages back I've watched a ton of AGDQ 2015 videos (thanks for the rec, thread) and I'm considering what I could run for the hell of it just because.

There are also like 8 open disputes against Todd Rogers scores right now and they're all really solid. Scores that would take 100 hours, are impossible because the game ends before then, or the score is mathematically impossible because it ends in the wrong number. He has almost no defenders now. The common folk were even saying he should be banned even if 5.51 is possible.

Dashing? But I'm not even moving!

BigJon is IRL streaming right now, and it's pretty eye-opening and tear-jerking.

Six years ago he was diagnosed with a hereditary condition that his grandparent(s?) had. Life expectancy for that can be as low as 4 years. At least once, a doctor has told him quote "How are you still alive?".

This past Monday, at a follow-up visit to his GP for that condition, they told him that it looked like his liver and lungs were failing and he would die in the next five days.

He streamed Tuesday.

He spent yesterday getting second opinions. Three of them. Three different hospitals, go right to the specialists, pay out of pocket, fill out all the forms, give medical history, draw blood, do whatever test it took and spend whatever money it took. After all, what would he be saving for?

Oh, btw, he didn't tell his mother about this.

Today two doctors have gotten back to him. This morning, one said he and his team "see zero trace of the illness." Like 15 minutes ago, another said that his bloodwork suggested he would have a long and healthy life.

e: The very first thing I saw him say on stream was that we should to send positive thoughts to "talon2461," a runner who recently posted a wacky pastebinsuicide note, but who is now talking to doctors. Jon is a prince.

Obviously I don't know, but I do know that test errors happen. And I imagine that if I was a doctor, and a patient I knew was healthy got a horrifying test result, I might be skeptical and re-run the test, but if I'd previously diagnosed the patient with a hereditary condition which can cause sudden massive organ failure, I would be less likely to consider the results anomalous.

Seems like a really bad error if this happened with the same doctor testing him several times over his life.

I figure the idea is to see if there's any emulation inaccuracies by comparing emulator ram dumps to ben's hardware ram dumps.
