here's a cool article about a syndrome, which apparently affects up to 2% of the population, where a person is unable to create a visual mental "picture" of a concept. you ask them to picture a sunny beach and they'll be able to tell you it has sand, there are waves, it's hot, the tides go in and out, etc. but they don't see a scene.

Deep cut golf clap.

And the aphantasia thing, picture a road sign in your head. If you can 'see' the font and know what number is on it you probably don't have it.

i didn't see any circles at first, then thought "ok maybe this is one of those magic eye kind of things", let my eyes drift and yep, as soon as i did that the circles were there. weird part is that after that, i can see the circles very easily even when looking at it in a normal way, can't really unsee them even

if you can "look around" the scene and talk about what you're "seeing" inside your head -- even if some of the details aren't super clear -- then you don't have aphantasia.

at least that's my best guess. i can't describe what improbable lobster's experience is any more than he can describe mine, i'm sure.

oh no blimp issue posted:

it varies. i think it's a spectrum, where some people have aphantasia and can't do it at all, and some people have hyper-real experiences like looking at a photo, and most people are somewhere in between.

like, if you ask me to picture a stop sign, i can easily do that. i can walk around it in my head and see the galvanization on the post, the cracked pavement at the bottom, the grass sticking out of the cracks, the hexagonal pattern of reflectors in the word STOP, the dented corner, the bullet hole, the lizard stuck to the back. i can press my hand against it and see the pattern of hand oils left on the shiny surface.

but note that that's all imaginary. i can't do that with memories -- at least not reliably. some people can recall going out to dinner with their husband and tell you the price of everything on the menu, as if they're looking at a photograph. i can see whatever infinite detail i want in the stop sign i'm imagining, but i couldn't tell you any of that about the specific one at the end of my street. i can still "see" that particular sign -- just that when i try to see the details they either kind of go gray and slip away, or are replaced by something that i'm pretty sure i'm imagining, like the bullet hole.

imagining things with my idiot brain is like reading descriptions in a book, there's just no visual component to my thoughts or memories or imagination at all.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

It's funny because reading descriptions in a book to me is fairly meaningless until I create a mental image of what's going on

It bugs me a lot when a book I've read is adapted into a movie and the movie doesn't look like what it does in my head

I must be mostly-aphasic. I can visualize scenes if I try and have some visual memories that I can bring to my mind’s eye, but in general day-to-day life my thoughts have basically no visual component. My memories are almost all propositional, not experiential.

e: oops, not aphasic. Thanks sagebrush!

but seriously it's kinda fascinating that that condition exists, since it's so fundamental to how my brain works (like, i doubt i could be a designer if i couldn't come up with a visual image of an idea in my head) but clearly causes no major problems for people who have it

there's a similar condition that affects a similar number of people where they can't hear music. like they can hear it, but just as random noises like a casino floor or a loud cafeteria or whatever. no ability to distinguish the patterns and sequences that we call music. they also can't hum a tune or tell you which of two notes played is higher or lower

reminds me of some recent studies examining the musical tastes of psychopaths

apparently they strongly prefer rap and marching band music at weirdly higher rates but i think they’re still ongoing or expanding their testing pool or something

also pop psych etc etc
