Re: trans women in sports, muscle mass, distribution and density in trans women has the same variation and range as in cis women after a year of HRT. All the scaremongering and complaining about trans women out-competing cis women is simply transphobia, or at the very least fear borne of ignorance. Like taitale said, bone structure (so height basically) is about all that differs. There aren't many sports where height gives you an advantage - basketball and volleyball are about all I can think of, and even then it's not like the tallest players are necessarily the best.

Oh I see what you're getting at. Yeah some sort of parity system would be good but how do you determine that? Weight is out because men are still more able for a given bodyweight. Not to mention for a huge amount of effort you would still be left with largely male only and female only brackets/events because the gap between the strongest/fastest woman and the bottom of the field in men is still sizeable.

Yeah, but there's also the fact that in a bunch of sports where raw muscle mass is less important- like shooting, for example- women are absolutely able to mop the floor with men. In every single one of these sports the women's events have been deliberately changed so that the scores are no longer comparable with men's scores; usually this happens almost immediately after a woman starts to dominate a gender-mixed division.

Don't get me wrong, men tend to dominate the sports that men dominate at, but there are a lot of less muscle-dependent sports where women are equally capable of wrecking poo poo.

The only thing I can think of is snowboarding, because of the binding placement, and I am not 100% sure it would give you an advantage, and I am not 100% sure there is enough variation in hip width for it to matter. I've seen some men with some pretty wide hips and some women with some pretty slim hips.

Huh, I had no idea. I'm a little surprised that testosterone has such an impact on the maintenance of muscle mass (and not just growth).

re: the earlier education conversation

RNZ posted:

...more than half the cases involved children with recognised behaviour problems. Twenty-three of the reports came from secondary schools, 79 from special schools, and 321 from primary schools.
Recognised behavioural problems is a broad term and covers half of the students, of those remaining many will have unacknowledged\unrecognised behavioural problems, mental health issues or complications stemming from their home life. We have the highest rate of family violence in the developed world, which is obviously going to be reflected in the behaviour of children as they normalise violence before they start school. Perhaps as "Minister for Child Poverty" Jacinda Ardern will address some of the issues surrounding this, I'm not holding my breath though.

I know a bit about the Special Needs side of schools. As much as I love to hate the guy, I can't put the blame on Key it was well before his time, if you want to you could perhaps blame Ruth Richardson or even Roger Douglas. I suspect though that it was just a continuation of New Zealand's deinstitutionalisation from the 70's onwards. In as much as I recall, special needs classes started integrating the late eighties or early nineties which definitely involved some schools shutting down. The whole situation is complex and involves more time and money than the system has available or is willing to allocate.

Given the existing structure or lack thereof, there are huge benefits for people who are on the high end of the spectrum if they can get educated alongside those who don't have special needs. Government support starts to disappear as soon as they leave the school system, many will end up joining the workforce in some capacity through groups like IHC. In the 90's the class sizes were about ten to fifteen students with a teacher who was experienced and to some degree had specialised in that area of education. Teachers in general also had access to a lot more teacher aid.

Given the condition of our schools, social services and mental health system I would guess the situation will probably get worse before it gets better. Or it will just get worse as we continue our current trend of attempting to emulate the worst parts of the US system. Sadly there just isn't a lot of political capital involved especially when other issues are a lot more visible. The consequences of current policy will be something for a future government to deal with, just as we are dealing with issues stemming from policies that were put in place twenty to thirty years ago.

No it's not? Look at the height difference between Usain Bolt and that American dude who came second all the time. Like sure, no 5 foot dude is going to win the 100m regardless of his training, muscle and technique, but there is significant size variation is most sports.

I guess a corollary of National being in power (and the culture that JK set within the party, to be fair to him) is that these racists kept their poo poo to themselves, but now the corks out of the bottle and they've got nine years of pent up bigotry to vent. The media def need to be asking themselves why they're publishing this hateful poo poo though.

It's almost nostalgic for me, thinking back to my early political memories of National/Nat supporters bashing Maori. National are also saying beneficiaries will sign up for university courses just to get more money as students, which is really reminiscent of the line they ran when WFF was brought in of "people will have babies just for the cash".

Oh he knows. It's a lot less "lol incompetence" and more that they're unhappy about the election result so they're trying to spin a line questioning its legitimacy. National's behaviour since their loss is honestly scaring me -- they're going deep down the Republican rabbithole and we do not need this country's politics to be any more like the US.

They are just going to keep hammering the election results because they want the narrative of the stolen election no matter how blatantly false it is to both undermine the governments current work, drive the base for the next election for another run at FPTP in a MMP system. They have killed all their "Friends". The lies become reality within their minds if it goes on for long enough and reality for us if we engage such absurdity in good faith.

It's American right wing politics horror show. The response must be cutting them off with "gently caress of you lying dumb shits", not to engage them in polite conversation. The government is half way there by just ignoring them and just doing their job which is just fine, less energy wasted on them the better.

Speaking of which, saw this the other day and it made me think along the same lines.

quote:

National's being accused of spamming Parliament, its MPs lodging more than 6000 parliamentary questions in the last month.

Nearly 6300 questions have been submitted, with the majority asking what events or meetings a minister had attended on a particular date.

In contrast, Newsroom says only 964 were submitted by the Labour-led Opposition in the month following the 2014 election.

Labour Leader of the House Chris Hipkins says the Opposition's got its priorities wrong.

"What we've seen from the National Party in the last few weeks is the parliamentary equivalent of spam mail, and as a result I don't think they're going to get much useful information out of it," he told Newshub.

Shadow Leader of the House, National MP Simon Bridges, says so many questions are being asked because Labour's not giving them good enough answers.

"We're not getting answers in Parliament or outside of it from new ministers. If they answered our questions… we wouldn't have to ask so many," he told Newshub on Sunday morning.

"We have a right to ask questions, we have a right to get answers. We're not getting them at the moment, and that's leading them to yet more while we try and work out how we can get good answers to these, we think, reasonable questions."

Undoubtedly, 6000 written questions in a month is a lot.

But is it fair to demand those answers? Absolutely. Is it hypocritical of National to be complaining they're being blocked? You bet. Does that matter? Not one bit.

Because the answers, or at least the willingness to provide those answers, benefit New Zealand as a democracy.

In July 2010 Labour asked 8791 questions in a single month.

More than 7000 of those questions came from MP Trevor Mallard alone.

Now in the Speaker's chair, it's his jurisdiction to force answers where they are not fairly being withheld if a complaint is laid.

Labour is getting off to a poor start on transparency.
