I didn't understand why the Flyers did that trade then and I really don't get it now.

He was awesome on the PP but completely god awful at 5v5, to the point that it was a legitimate detriment to the team as a whole.

Hextall likely only traded Schenn because of Nolan Patrick. I would agree on the change of scenery. I watched the Flyers last year, and a lot of Blues games this year, and Schenn looks like a different player. Yes he is playing with Tarasenko, yes he did have shittier line mates for a lot of last season, but Schenn spent time playing with Giroux and Vorachek and looked worse then than this year with the Blues. In general, its probably part of whatever curse is on the Flyers. Constant goalie controversy, players always play better after they leave for other teams, etc.

DJExile posted:Didn't he move Schenn before they knew the draft order? No he was traded at the draft. It was a classic "shake things up" deal though and Patrick shouldn't have figured into that at all. At his peak he's probably a Brayden Schenn type, so it's not like Schenn would've blocked him. The Flyers got a decent return in the form of 2 1st rounders, so it was more a shift to a rebuild when they got a good futures offer for a guy who appeared at the time to have settled into that 50-60 point 2nd line centre role.

i dont know what he's done in regular season games since but if i was a caps fan i'd probably hate schenn after that 2016 playoff series too, he ran around like an idiot the whole time and earned himself a 3 game suspension after the end of it also haven't the flyers as a whole been poo poo at 5v5 under hakstol? i got the impression last season at least that they relied waaaay too much on their power play to score

Don't know how much that is Hakstol and how much was Giroux's body falling apart.

5v5 was a mess for a few reasons last year. Giroux wasn't healed from hip issues, the goaltending was a disaster which forced forwards to play super conservative in that low-to-high system to help out a mediocre-at-best defense, and some guys were just snake bit.

Hextall has been pretty savvy on trading and drafting after inheriting this mess and needing some years to clean it up. There wasn't really anything he could do to rush the defense along, but he made some savvy moves and has definitely strengthened the team's prospect pool for years to come. Even if Schenn is good now, I feel like those two firsts along with Nolan Patrick are going to be more important than having another good center on a team that has won 8 of 23 games this year.

The team still has some fan-favorite top players in Giroux, Voracek, and Simmonds to enjoy in the meantime, but every move has been savvy. There's no false start like Buffalo getting Eichel then making big acquisitions, when they lucked into Patrick they doubled down by getting two more first rounders. I'm impressed by Hextall's GMing in general.

Yeah my complaints with Ron are pretty limited so far, I'd like to see the kids come up sooner but there's a bit of a logjam right now anyway, and if the biggest beef I have with the guy is that he's a little too patient, I can't really hate that in the big picture.

What do they have in terms of forwards besides Nolan when looking at the long term? It strikes me that they may be in one of those awkward positions where when all their young talented D is matured enough, their current star forwards will be declining and so they'll get stuck in an inbetween spot instead of ready to make the jump to being a contender.

It's pretty good looking right now. The Phantoms have been doing really well lately and recent call-up Danick Martel was (maybe still is?) leading the AHL in scoring. Odds are Wayne Simmonds will be allowed to walk after next season and you'll see more of the youth forwards come up.

I feel like you could trace it in other ways. Howe > Gretzky > Jumbo Joe Not sure if Gretzky and Joe would have played each other, though they were both active at the same time. e: Ray Bouque played to 2001, and his rookie year he would have played against Howe. So basically anyone who came in as a regular fairly young and is ~36 to start the season would potentially be a 5th in line. Jordan7hm fucked around with this message at 23:57 on Nov 27, 2017 |
