I wonder if the alt-right consider it a failure because 1 person died when they were obviously going for much more. It made them look both cowardly and ineffectual, while at the same time showed that yes, their genocidal free-speech ideology means they do want to kill people. I wonder if had the murderer killed say, 25 people, they would be embracing him as a hero and they'd be leveraging that fear more effectively. Part of me believes that, but most of them seem like the type that just want the airs and respect of being some badass warrior-philosopher without having to actually get their hands dirty (or at least get hurt themselves). Edit: If anything, the reason he wasn't lauded by the alt-right was because he is in legal trouble over the incident.
