"Balloonatic" is one of my favorite Modesty strips. Guido's not my favorite recurring cast member (he's one of the go-to examples of a character who's introduced because somebody has to gently caress everything up and it's not going to be the hyper-competent protagonists), but the sequence where his girlfriend has to drive to Rome has stuck with me for years for some reason. I also get a kick out of Modesty's challenge only working because one of Smythe's confederates gets mad over sex discrimination. Welcome back to 1983, I guess. (There's a really handy chart in the back of all the Titan Books "Modesty" reprints that details the dates on which each strip ran. "Balloonatic" is September 1982 through February 1983.)

I don't know what it is about it, but Nekonaughey is right up there with Wallace the Brave for me.

Some Guy TT posted:Would anyone be interested in reposting Weapon Brown? When I first came to this thread it was just finishing, so I never really understood why anyone was excited so much by it- the hiatus between page updates didn't help. But now that it's done, it could easily make for a more accessible regular contribution, especially with the new year's thread coming up. Wasn't it drawn by a goon? Yeah, it would be good to see Weapon Brown in this thread again. The author did post here, I can't remember his username though.

SuperKlaus posted:I'm happy to see it posted here because it's such important comics history, and it owns the poo poo out of a lot of the trash comics the weirdos religiously "contribute," but... Krazy Kat's an interesting one in that its story, while present, is secondary to its aesthetics. The zen-like triangle connecting the characters makes the strip easy to grasp, but the interest really lies in the way Herriman plays with the triangle in endless inventive variations. There's also that dream-like mood he creates: ever-shifting backgrounds, bold colors (in the Sunday strips, anyway), radically simple scenery that manages to feel magical rather than desolate. And of course there's Krazy's wild, loose hybrid dialect and his/her offhand, often-allusive poetry, which IMHO is close in spirit to what Gertrude Stein was writing at the time: a sort of playful deconstruction of language born out of a love of words.
