Welcome to the end of 2017 2017-britain.jpg The Department for Exiting the European Union finally released some reports and they were bad, like ridiculous bullshit, David Davis might have to stand before Parliament accused of contempt, and after a year of "we're not going to pay the ridiculous divorce bill" we're probably going to pay the divorce bill, and now just have to settle the minor issue of the Irish border, which has only been a problem since about 1922. According to some Street Adults, Ireland is just being petty about the border issues because 'they lost'. In The News A report by the BMJ shows that austerity has been responsible for 120,000 excess deaths since 2010. The Paradise Papers show that surprisingly many of the wealthy and powerful, including the Queen's estate, have been dodging taxes with offshore loopholes. Priti Patel has an interesting holiday and then resigns. Nobody will see the slides for another 50 years. Richard Leonard is elected as ScotLab leader after Kezia Dugdale resigned, beating Anas Sarwar. Labour liberals have some hot takes. After voting to leave the EU, British cities are enraged about no longer being able to apply to be European Capital of Culture. Britain will also be 'kicked out' of Europol and the European Defence Agency 'against its will'. Michel Barnier accuses the UK of abandoning Europe at a time when it should be standing shoulder to shoulder against non-Europeans. Mass panic closes Oxford Circus after nonexistent terrorists target a tube station. An American actor gets engaged to a former British soldier. The OECD says that the dire predictions from the ONS, anticipating five years of sluggish growth, are 'too optimistic'. The UK loses its seat on the International Court of Justice for the first time. The government's autumn budget goes after the youth vote with 'railcards for people up to 30' and 'some stamp duty poo poo that will cost the treasury £3.2bn and not do anything about house prices'. The Foreign Office advises that Ireland ignores Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. Amber Rudd proposes changes to the Investigatory Powers Act in response to Tom Watson's successful legal claim, but critics say they don't go far enough in protecting people's rights. Some actual Brexit impact studies have been released, but they're not the ones David Davis wants you to see. In response to OwlFancier- I agree, and the state has an important role to play in this, as does the nationalisation of the railways and utilities. However, I would have thought that this was achievable in a Social-Liberal framework, without the lack of access to trade, credit and investment that adopting full communism here without the support of more powerful communist benefactors would result.

OwlFancier posted:"Liberalize stuff or we'll starve you" is hardly a ringing endorsement of liberalism mate. I think I may have expressed myself incorrectly. What I meant to say was that I agree with you that our dwindling resources should not be subject to further deregulation and privatisation. The state has an important role to play, as does nationalisation. However, this can be achieved in a Social-Liberal framework. Adopting a full communist framework would cut us off from ready access to the trade, credit and investment that we need to compensate for our resource and industrial deficiencies. Communism would only be possible via association with a sufficiently powerful alliance of communist states, or if we had a powerful communist benefactor like the USSR.

OwlFancier posted:I think I got whiplash going from opining the concept of socialism in one country to suggesting that the USSR could fix it. My point is that for a nation of limited energy, agricultural and industrial means like ours, socialism in one country is impossible, and would require the support of a stronger nation with the means to help us offset that deficiency, like the economic relationship between the USSR and her clients and allies.

Adonis I'm not sure you're using the same definition of liberal as other people here. Liberalism is unregulated free markets and private ownership of utilities, both of which are strictly inferior in all cases to regulation and public ownership of utilities, which is morally inferior to the proletariat sharing equity ownership of the means of production but might protect you from being murdered by yanks

I guess that you can read Social Democracy where I have written Social-Liberalism.

I get him and the other rear end in a top hat mixed up a lot but hakimashou iirc has wonderful views such as: 'the US should have nuked the entire USSR after the end of ww2 to prevent communism/stalinism' and 'it's the Palestinians' own fault that Israel keeps genociding them '. I forget if it's him or the other nazi idiot who thinks slavery can be okay under certain circumstances as well? He usually does this by concern trolling instead of outright saying it as well which is even more annoying.
