AVS is all about the Sony core SSCS5 speakers right now, they're $75/pair at Best Buy.

I think one of the reasons people recommend the Q100 so much is because it's easy to position with the concentric driver and front port. I nearly bought them but decided to take a gamble on my closeout Cantons instead.

You're gonna want a really beefy amp to power them though. They're power hungry for sure.

2Cs are well worth 500/ pair :colbert:

The things about Vandersteens are:

1) not efficient. They have nice flat impedance curves so you don't need an amp that will drive crazy low loads but a few watts are a good idea
2) get the instructions and follow them closely. They really need to be set up just so or you will get little of their major benefit (phase coherence, leads to AMAZING imaging)
3) You will probably not be impressed initially. They don't hype anything up and if they err in one direction it will be smoothness. It really takes a little time to warm up to them, and that's best done without distraction

Looking to set up a 5.1 system. I was think floor standing for the front, bookshelves for the rears. And a center. I would prefer to get matching stuff, and am willing to fill in gaps. But I would prefer to keep the speakers under about $1800. That would leave me room for a sub and a receiver within my budget of about $3-3.5k. I already have a Sony X900E TV.

I'm fine with buying a brand new receiver. I'm kind of buying all my home theater stuff within a few months of each other so once I'm set, I don't think I'll need to upgrade until something finally shits the bed.

With a budget like you have, and with what you want to buy (all matching gear), you're probably going to do fine by demoing some speakers at a hi-fi store or reading reviews and ordering online.

That being said, these are probably fine and Polk surrounds and a center are easy to come by/affordable. $225 or best offer: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/d/polk-audio-media-theater/6395982758.html.

for $450 you can get some of those Andrew Jones Pioneer floorstanding speakers that internet folks like, as well as a sweet Marantz 2230: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/d/vintage-receiver-marantz/6395945289.html

Again at $450 are some nice looking Mission speakers. If you have a smaller room these would be nice fronts or they'd be crazy surround speakers, but that's kinda getting silly. Also on the expensive side, but you have the budget: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/d/mission-cyrus-782-audiophile/6367637213.html

B&W DM305s for $180 with boxes. Good deal. You could do WAY worse than this: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/d/bw-bowers-wilkins-dm305-tower/6378791716.html

And then the same guy has a pair of DM303s for $120. There's your rears. Find a center and you're all set. https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/d/bw-bowers-wilkins-dm303/6393168261.html

Edit:

And then you can get this too: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ele/d/vintage-luxman-pd264-turn/6395848955.html

Man, you guys both have lots of good stuff on craigslist.

Edit again: If you just want to be boring, here's a Polk 5.1 matched set, but I think it's badged like a box-store budget set and it's not as fun as getting something else, but one stop shopping: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/ele/d/polk-audio-51-speaker-system/6387871502.html

I think ~100wpc is a sweet spot for them. Not that you're gonna use all 100 watts but sometimes you really want to turn them up and having enough overhead is nice.
My favorite amp to pair them with is my Acurus DIA-100. However, I think that might have a lot more to do with the quality of that amp, rather than the amount of power it can output.
A surprisingly not so great amp to pair them with is my Rotel RX-1052. I'm sure it's not a bad choice, but after putting the Acurus through them, it's just no comparison.

I'm thinking I should get ahead of it and just get a new receiver, especially with all the deals flying around.

Can I get some recommendations for comparable receivers that don't have known issues on sale for the holidays? I know I've seen a bunch that I've ignored until deciding I should just bite the bullet, and now I predictably am having trouble finding them.

Ecce Buffo
Hi Guys,

My parents moved into a house a couple years ago with speakers embedded into the ceilings of both the upstairs and downstairs. My dad wanted to set them up, but never got around to it, so I figured I'd do it for his birthday/christmas present.

I know next to nothing about audio cabling and whatnot so I am coming here to make sure I do not end up a complete idiot about this.

I know there are at least 4 loose speaker cables bundled up in their entertainment unit, with a possibility of 8. The speakers are on either side of a peaked ceiling on the main floor and just flush with the ceiling tiles in the basement. Seeing the speakers as is, I feel that this isn't a surround sound system, but rather just a music system.

I know I need to confirm how many cables are there before I get a receiver, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Do I need to know anything about the speaker cables (the ones without a connector at the end)? Do they have a 2.0 system in this house, or how can I tell if it is more advanced (I haven't seen a subwoofer but it could be built into the entertainment unit)? What common problems should I avoid while looking for this?

I'll have an update later if I decide to go this way, I just wanted to see if this is a good idea or not.

I have two bookshelf speakers already and figure this will be a step up from the built in TV speakers. My main concern is wiring for surround at some point down the line when I don't have a dedicated home theater room, and don't want my living room to look completely goony with wires and speakers all over the place, but that's a problem that doesn't exist yet. Any reason I shouldn't get this for gaming/movies/tv watching?

I have the same model but a couple years older (tx-sr353) as the receiver for my secondary TV setup with a couple older Polk Monitor40s and it has been very solid. IIRC I paid like $119 on accessories4less, so if you are OK with a refurb that route could save you some money. Looks like that same 373 is at $159 over there, so not too much of a savings but still some.
For the down the line concern of adding speakers, start off with just the two you have, and like you said it is already such a step up that it may satiate you for a while. For my main TV setup, I started with the stereo setup and was fine with that for a few years, and later added a center and a sub, and I'm currently satisfied with that and have been for a year. Adding a center and a sub didn't really pose any problems with having wiring and speakers all over the place as subs are easy to hide, and there are plenty of above or below the TV brackets and shelves and what not for mounting the center depending on your other furniture and whatever.
As for the receiver itself, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, but also nothing too awesome about it. Perfect entry level receiver, as it does it's job without complaint and without making itself known. The only strange thing it does is if you have the TV on and are using it for a video source and then switch over to an audio only source, it plays the video from the first source and audio from the second. I've decided that it's a feature as it lets me play tetris on the Wii while listening to spotify

So after looking around, and getting advice from here and other people. I have upped my budget to $3-3.5k. I was looking at a Marantz SR6011 for $750.

It seems almost impossible to go listen to speakers here because almost every home theater store I've looked up seems to be online with free in-home consultation. Or is very high end with their entry level starting at $3k. What speaker brands do people recommend? I was looking to get a couple floor standing for left and right and some bookshelf for the rears as well as a center. Some Dolby Atmos would be cool but not a necessity.

I'm going back and forth on whether to get an AVR and pair it with the two good/decent Bose bookshelf speakers (I was given them and my Googlin leads me to believe they're ok) I have now and adding speakers over time as the budget allows, or to get a Vizio 5.1 soundbar. I've got a 2015-ish Vizio 5.1system on one of our TVs and it's ok to us.

The real question is whether or not me or the other regular TV/movie/music listeners in my household are going to regret having to watch stuff with only 2 channels and no center channel.

Is it going to suck? I mean, I realize lots of TVs just have 2 channel speakers built in, but the separation is going to be even more so it makes me wonder how its going to work out.
