I loved Dubuque while in college, but then again I was on campus at Clarke 99% of the time and other than soccer, baseball, and basketball away games I literally never went West of Dubuque. After midnight the only places I knew were open was the Diamond Jo, Perkins, and Wal-Mart. Once, while drinking free soda at the casino for hours after midnight, I hit a full house on Carribean Stud Poker and went straight to Wal-Mart and bought a TV with my winnings.

Bears chat: I don't have much faith in Pace, and if Fox wasn't his choice he shouldn't have taken the job, so he doesn't get a pass from me with it not being "his coach." I do get not wanting to fire back to back GMs so quickly though.

I don't know what you are seeing in Trubisky to be excited about. At best you can argue the roster is so bad you can't grade him yet. But he's shown practically nothing as a starter.

Shaheen had the one nice game and has been non-existent since. Can't even beat out a guy the Browns cut for playing time.

Whitehair is also not good. Not sure how you could label him an impact player.

I don't even think the eye test makes him look good. He's been really inaccurate. Best you can say is he doesn't gently caress up too much but the last few weeks have shown regression in that area.

I'm not even saying he's a bust or anything. It just feels like with how bad the coaches and how bad the roster is, you can't really know what you have yet. And Watson looking like a complete stud out of the gate makes the trade look much worse than it already did.

I said they have shown signs, I didn't say they were all-pro's. Each of those guys I listed is either a rookie or second year player. I'm really not sure what point you are trying to make. Are you upset that the Bears aren't churning out multiple all-pro players right out of every draft? Do you think maybe the problem might be your expectations are unrealistic.

Shaheen has barely done anything, but you can see in the way he moves that he has the potential to be a serious mismatch in size and speed. Does that mean he will get there? No. But you shouldn't grow inpatient because the small school guy isn't amazing out of the gate.

Trubisky is the one guy I have the least amount of confidence in, but he has shown signs of being able to do good things on a football field. He has made a nice throw here and there and the occasional scramble. I'm not sure what you expect to see from a rookie with no skill position talent around him.

I find it interesting that you hate Whitehair the most, since last season the guy actually played at an all-pro level. To imply he hasn't shown potential is disingenuous.

The idea that the Browns are closer is laughable. Their one stud player that is a cornerstone, and the rest of that roster is a trainwreck. They actually have a decent coach in place and can't win a game. We have a team being visibly hamstrung by poor coaching and have squeezed out some wins.

I just see no benefit to firing Pace. We aren't going to bring in a major upgrade and we pretty much stunt the development of the roster we have built, because new GMs tend to want their own guys. Hell, the Bears can't wait to get rid of Fuller, despite him playing like one of the better corners in football this season.

Niwrad
Jul 1, 2008

Of course they have potential. They had potential coming out of college.

And I don't think expectations are unrealistic. They traded a bunch of picks to move up one spot in the draft to get Trubisky. Expectations should be sky high because those picks are valuable for a rebuilding team. And I'm not expecting Shaheen to be an all-pro, just good enough to beat out Daniel Brown on the depth chart.

Whitehair might have been good last year but he hasn't been good this year. Now maybe that's the Bears loving around with his position too much. But he's not good right now.

The Browns roster is worse than the Bears but they have more young talent on it and 8 more picks in the upcoming draft (including 2 picks in the top-10).

You're right that there is probably no benefit to firing pace. Maybe he'll be able to get this team up to .500 in a few years. Probably beats having the McCaskey's hire another consultant to bring in some lame hire that'll just keep circling the drain.

To me, this is a coaching problem. Shaheen looks so much better on the field than Daniel Brown in limited reps. The fact that they keep putting Brown in instead of Shaheen makes me think they don't know what they are doing.

I get the frustration with Trubisky. I was a Watson guy, so it's hard to compare the two and not be mad. But most rookies don't light it up their rookie season, so it's hard for me to be upset about Trubisky. But he has a nice arm and I can see how he "could" be developed into something special. But not with what he has to work with in a coaching or personnel standpoint.

And the problem with the Browns is that, even with all those draft picks, they don't know what they are doing. I was all on board with moneyball for football, but they don't know how to make football-based evaluations. The reports about the disconnect between coaching and front office over there are troubling. If that is really what you want, have fun. :v:

I can't wait to delve into some front office off-season evaluations this season. I don't think anyone does it and I'm fascinated to see how it turns out.
