Lol, sales tax on used purchases? Get hosed. It's like taxing people on the value of stuff they win in competitions, just grasping twattishness.

After paying sales tax for the original purchase I then pay taxes on all the equipment I own for my lawn care business every year. I buy something new then I depreciate the value each year for 5 years until it reaches 20% of the original price. Then it gets added to the depreciated list and I pay that 20% forever as long as I own it.

I also pay property tax on all my vehicles both business and personal every year with the value based on the book value.

Currently I can write off what I paid for those state and town taxes from my federal income tax. In one or both of the bills being worked on in the House and Senate right now will not be able to write those off anymore.

I don't mind paying taxes as my civic duty but it's getting kind of crazy. Especially when those clowns in the government give themselves pay raises whenever it comes up in the budget.

It's super twatty.

It's like you never really "own" your property outright because if you don't pay the taxes on it they will come take it away then auction it to pay the taxes. If the auction doesn't cover the back taxes you are still liable for the balance. And in my state the tax man has arresting power like the police and would be brought into court and face charges.

Make money? Income tax. Put it in a fund? Tax it, you bought shares. Withdraw it from a fund? Tax it again because you got your money! Spend that money? Sales tax. Ridiculously over done.

Tax on a used car is insane, just like I posted above. The tax was already paid originally and there is no service provided when I go buy a truck from some guy on craigslist.

I Want To Believe.
The only "ownership" taxes I have to pay aren't even really that. They're taxes for the use of public services, effectively. Council tax on the house and VED on the cars (and even then, only when I want to use them on the road, and several are exempt).

Tax on profits made by investment interest/shares is understandable, at least, as you are earning money.

And you wonder how the GOP death cult are able to get people to vote for them every single time on the promise of lowering taxes.

Let me guess though, the states charging these ridiculous taxes are all Republican too?

I think one of the bills under consideration at the federal level will also wipe out the mileage deduction for self employed/sole proprietors.

Which is gonna gently caress over pretty much everyone that drives for a living using their own vehicle - couriers, uber/lyft drivers, owner/operators of big rigs, etc (I'm included in this - my taxes are minimal because of how much I drive for work, but I'm losing a ~$15,000/year tax deduction if that passes - most of my work is solidly considered courier, and my expenses are high enough that my net income would be way below minimum wage if I didn't have the deductions that I have).

Note: I haven't kept up with this in a month or two, so I don't know if it's still working its way through the govt.

It's being rewritten overnight, because the Senate Parliamentarian told them that they can't count contingency tax increases that trigger in a few years if revenues don't increase as offsetting deficit spending now. It failed the vote last night to go back to committee, and is on the floor now, so they have to both get it revenue neutral for 10 years -and- pay off enough of the GOP caucus to actually get 50 votes to pass it.

Yep! It's just another huge cash grab to get more public money into private, wealthy hands. It's the robber barons all over again. If the tax plan goes through its gonna pop that huge house of cards stock market bubble that's happening right now and we can live 1929 all over again. Good times!!!

Almost every state charges sales tax on the value of a used car. Sales tax is supposed to be charged on every transaction, at a store or privately, but there's no mechanism to enforce it on private transactions, generally. They can with cars because you have to get a new title when it changes hands.

When I lived in Indiana, annual registration also included an excise tax based on the current value of the car. Death and taxes.

My ex had a bad experience doing that. When we were living in Florida she flew out to Missouri because we got a killer deal on a VR6 Jetta from a friend. She made it all the way to Georgia and got pulled over by a super pissed off state trooper. She almost got arrested and the car impounded but somehow got out of it with the bill of sale and title but the cop said never to do it again or bad things would happen. I think driving it that far depends on luck or maybe because she was super hot (little humblebrag ;) ).

I bought my first E30 in the back hills of West Virginia, drove straight there from Wisconsin to buy it then attempted to drive straight home. I had never bought a car from more than a couple miles from where I was living so I didn't even think about insurance, registration, etc. Made it about halfway before we stopped for gas and a State Trooper followed us out. As soon as I merged on the interstate he pulled me over...it was ~2am. By around 3:30am I had convinced him it wasn't stolen and I was just a stupid kid so he escorted us to the local DMV to get a transit plate. DMV opened it 8 or 9, we got plates and were on our way. Worked out ok because we needed the sleep anyway.

When I was in NY I bought a Cherokee 3 hours away and started to drive it back without a plate. Have done this a hundred times in FL and never had a problem, but I was almost instantly pulled over in NY. Luckily I was pulled over near an exit and I talked the cop into letting me pull off the interstate and park it in a Kmart parking lot to register it the next day, he was getting ready to call a tow truck to come get it and impound it. Where it was parked was still a long ways away so it was a pain in the rear end getting everything done (NY DMV suuuuucks) but it was better than the alternative.

In Colorado they are Democrats. The Republicans put in legislation many years ago to limit new taxes without letting people vote for it first, the Democrats have gotten around it by replacing taxes with rediculously high registration fees. You could argue the Republicans forced the hands of the Democrats, I could argue the govt does a poo poo job of spending the money it already has, and will do anything to collect more of it but whatever blah blah blah.... ..
