After years of putting off getting back into drawing, finally got off my butt and did some rough studies:

Super nice lighting here Sharpest Crayon.

I both hate working under time constraints but also it's the only way anything ever gets doneee.

And thank you, I took the reference photo because the light was falling on him so delightfully. Picking colours when they're that near black, and blending into big areas of straight black has turned out surprisingly difficult, but rewarding.

It's all about proportions. You made a pretty common mistake for new artists, which is to put the line of the mouth at the midpoint between the nose and chin. On most people, it's the bottom of the lower lip that's at the midpoint, with the line of the mouth being slightly higher than that.

No problem. My recommendation for portraiture is to always stop and take multiple looks at your roughs before going on to the finished product. I'll usually take two looks: one for when it's at its roughest (which is usually just planes and a few line indicators for features like eyes/nose), and one when I've added on more features like the eyes, eyebrows, and so on. If something feels off about it and you can't quite figure out what, do a quick general proportion check. If it still feels off, it's usually a result of a certain feature not matching the model, not showing enough plane changes (such as with the bridge of the nose), or you having lost the intended emotion.

It's still a pretty good drawing, though. You've got a clear grasp of drawing elementary forms (which is especially noticeable on the right arm), which is the hard part to get down pat. Everything else is simply knowledge.

After years of pretty much doing only design, I've recently tried to get into doing illustration. I can't draw for poo poo without a reference photo, but I figure if I do this enough I'll start to get it?

In an effort to actually motivate myself to practice, a cartoonist friend agreed to do a weekly drawing exchange, where each of us rotates in picking a topic. This last one was Stranger Things, so this is what I came up with.

I make games!

I've been going through a real inspirational/motivational drought lately, so I barely got anything drawn at all.

Fortunately I managed to squeeze something out today. Unfortunately it ended up pretty generic. Ah well, better luck next time, I guess?

On a side note, I've always found it interesting to see other people's sketch phases of a completed final piece. Some people (like me) are pretty messy, and others surprisingly clean. If you have anything like that handy, I'd be interested in seeing it!

Sometimes you end up with something mediocre that you'll look back on and think "hey that wasn't half bad actually". Just keep going 'till you're so bored out of your skull that you're drawing nothing but butts to entertain yourself and that's when you'll get your best/worst ideas.

I rarely have sketch phases 'cause I tend to finish everything in one sitting, but I managed to get phases from this rare several-goes-effort. Sketch, ink, solids, shade and highlight.

Guess wut, dragon.

If you sit down to raw without a plan or idea, most of the time that's how it'll end up. I like to keep a few low-stress ongoing projects on the backburner so (in the rare moments that I have free time to draw for myself) I'm not stuck without an idea. Some larger project that is easily broken down into smaller chunks is perfect for keeping inspiration going. Right now, I'm working on an animal alphabet. Try something like designing the images for a tarot deck, or drawing each of the demons from the Key of Solomon - something that gives you prompts so you don't have to struggle to find an idea. It helps me anyway.
