which is not to say that things may not turn out fine without a browser, but otoh if microsoft had given up every venture that internet nerds figured they were never going to succeed at they'd, well, for one, sure, have a lot fewer flops on their hands, but they would also at best be a tiny consultancy business surviving on meager fees from a few remaining exchange on linux installations

electron is not only way way worse than building the same thing with uwp, but, strategically, adopting it would casually cede a lot of control over the os to google

the browser standalone existing is not as strategically important, but over time it may stem the tide of the web (and then webapps) becoming entirely riddled with webkitisms. beyond that it is also way more fluid in touch, is more battery-friendly, has better stylus integration and so on, and while those are more narrow categories, dropping edge would mean being unable to enter any new market segment like that without google approval

i like edge on the go since chrome just kills the battery. haven't tried quantum yet

The vue web app we're working at the moment runs pretty slowly in edge. If you try to load the developer tools while it's loading, the entire edge process exits with no error. Just disappears.

Fortunately putting a "sorry this doesn't work in edge" message in place only affects ~5% of users, so problem solved!

they did, but it was the surface rt. the surface pro runs the full desktop os with no limitations on apps.

the ipad pro is a really expensive tablet, that only runs ipad apps. this new thing is once again, a really expensive tablet that only runs a limited subset of apps no one makes

except the surface rt, as a device, never attempted to inhabit the same niche as the other two, the instruction set is a technical detail only nerds consider, not like there is the least bit of compatibility between the surface rt and the ipad pro

keeping the arm supporting limping along is precisely like nt for powerpc/mips/alpha being kept limping along according to the platforms seeming relevance, it is insurance against a potential future where intel falls from grace. trying to ascribe market segment strategy to these things is looking at the wrong thing

the ipad pro as in the big stylus-centered device, which is the surface pro niche

the surface pro not being arm is not in and of itself central to it, but it running e.g. photoshop is pretty important, so it is easy to see why microsoft likely spent no time whatsoever making an arm one of that tier of device

otoh the rt is not a mile off no, but the implication that arm is a core part of competing with ipad pros is the usual nerdy focusing on incredibly irrelevant tech details of the things

windows on arm is largely free now that it exists, and prepares the company to have some out if intel starts slipping. it is not an embarrassment to customers who matter (i.e. internet nerds are sure to be upset for unclear reasons, as it is a proud slashdot-style traddition, but it is not going to hurt general sales). nt on alpha/mips/powerpc never paid off in any huge way, but they wanted into the server business and it wasn't similarly before intel proved that they managed to stick it out in that business
