Ford and Mazda had a real incestuous thing going on throughout the 90s so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the two companies did share taillights. I could easily imagine Ford taking the FD units and putting in a new lens and calling it a day.

Yeah, they used it to full effect in Australia from 1980. Mazda had just switched to FWD and ford kicked all euro derived RWD small and medium cars out, eg escort, cortina, so everything ford beside the falcon/fairlane was mazda based FWD Mazda 121 - Ford festiva mazda 323 - ford laser hatch (meteor for the sedan version) mazda 626 - ford telstar These were pretty much just rebadging and knock down kits So we didn't get any FWD euro derived fords like escort or sierra in the 80s Later on ford au went with their own design for the laser body, and dropped the telstar for a corsair (nissan based?), did a deal with nissan for the maverick (nissan patrol), which ended up meaning a few ford falcon utes had a nissan badge. Then they went with KIA built festiva (still with mazda) instead of the Japanese 121/demio. Then ford au starting bringing in USA ford flops like taurus to replace the medium car mazda/nissan based flops before the current ford europe/mazda feista, focus and mondeo line up. E: Also forgot the ford courier/ranger still share platform today with mazda. mazda b2600 - ford courier. Mazda bt50 - ford ranger Fo3 fucked around with this message at 13:46 on Dec 8, 2017 |

weren't the Sierra turbos good though? Or was it just a "no replacement for displacement" scenario? I know they did a one off 3.2l E30 in SA too. Air Con OR Power Steering, you choose!

They're rare now, but there's still a couple of fairly normal-looking Sierra hatchbacks and estates kicking around with anything from 250 to 400+bhp.

RIP the days where you would see all sorts of weird and wonderful local modifications to cars. Now that Holden and Ford are gone from Australia and I'm sure countless numbers of other local 'manufacturers', the world is going to become so much more homogenised.

It's funny that the best rivals to the Escape (Ford's #2 Vehicle) is the cx-5 and Sportage.

No wonder lane-keep and auto-brake are being implemented in newer cars, it's the only thing keeping people out of preventable accidents. I do appreciate they've included a 'screen off' button so the display doesn't kill my night vision, it's one of first things I look for in the settings when I get in a rental.
