I remember Blue Sub 6 being kind of cool but I dunno how well it's aged.

This was bad. The first fifteen minutes were promising. Colorful, cool, well realized post apoc setting, with the best Gonzo animation I can recall but it falls apart after the first action scene (the 3d work is dated, but it's not awful or distracting). The show is just boring and confusing. Despite only being 4 episodes long it's full of uninteresting scenes, with the characters vacuously mumbling about mostly nothing. What little plot there is is hard to follow because the conflict isn't really explained.

Squandered potential, but I didn't really like anything about this outside the visuals (and those are a bit uneven too).

E: kinda curious about the tie in game, cause it'd be a cool world to explore (though I'd prefer it without the weird humanoid animal faction).

I just finished rewatching Gargantia with some friends. I still found it as fantastic as I did the first time around, and they all enjoyed it a lot too.

There are a few embarrassing minutes of "why, anime?" fanservice and stereotypes somewhere in the middle, but they're vastly outweighed by all the things it does well. Its world is intriguing and well-realized, its emotional moments are solid, and its conclusion pulls things together beautifully.

Ryvius is a show i have really conflicted feelings on, but most of my experience watching it was enjoyable and i think it's interesting as a flawed show. so i'd definitely recommend it, maybe moreso if you go in knowing it's not a masterpiece, it's not just Lord of the Flies in space (there are mech/ship fights and gov't conspiracy), and the soundtrack is great as music but implemented atrociously in the show itself.

This mirrors my feelings.

The final episode was bizarrely happy and forgiving considering all the dark things that transpired. Like the Angelic Days scenario from Neon Genesis Evangelion but without the instrumentality (I was half expecting the show to reveal it was all Neya's dying hallucination). It felt almost loony.

Regarding the music, a few of the orchestral motifs sounded like rearrangements of stuff in Banner of the Stars (I checked, same composer). The hiphop-ish stuff was pretty cool, but like you say, poorly used.

I did like it overall. Especially how it captured youthful (or human) conflict. The stupid and trivial reasons the cast got into disagreements, and how those escalate through stubbornness and the inability to voice feelings. They overdo it sometimes (Yuki Aiba especially), but when it's not relying on tragic backstories for pathos, it's generally pretty good psychological drama. And the Lord of Flies moments are great.

Also, I wish Neya got fleshed out more.

Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, From The New World, Genshiken, Death Parade, His and Her Circumstances, Slayers, Samurai Flamenco, Ergo Proxy, Bebop, Utena, RahXephon, Kemonozume, Orange and the original series of Kino's Journey.

and who was bored by:

Flip Flappers, Kiznavier, the first few JoJo episodes, Gantz, Durarara!, Erased (after a decent start), Speed Grapher, Desert Punk, The House Of Five Leaves. Blood Blockade Battlefront

would I like:

- Ninja Scroll
- Kaiji
- Ruroni Kenshin
- Love Hina
- Excel Saga
- Noir
- Last Exile
- sticking with JoJo
- Hellsing
- Urusei Yatsura

(Additionally, is there anything you'd recommend me? I like solid dramatic stakes, interesting direction, atmospheric stories, and comedy based in characterisation, though I'll settle for theatre of the absurd if it's trying to say something. I dislike stories that lack a human interest, or that are enamoured with kitsch. Oh, and I love anime's fascination with super big apocalypse finales.)

You would very likely enjoy Kaiji, Hellsing Ultimate, and the rest of JJBA. Probably Ruroni Kenshin too. Skip the rest of the Hellsing stuff imo, it just doesn't compare to HU.

I can't recommend the Love Hina anime to anyone, but the manga ain't bad if you don't mind haremcomedy. Negima (also the manga) by the same author has similarly good characters but is also fairly action-heavy so it may be more up your alley.

As much as I love Noir, its pacing is absolutely glacial. It's very artsy and has great music but would probably bore you to tears. Madlax is a sort of spiritual sequel that at least has more going on, you may enjoy that more and I'd definitely recommend you try watching it first if you're interested in that kind of work.

I've noticed that Steins;Gate is missing from your list; ergo, you should watch Steins;Gate ASAP. Stick with it through the initial portion, the protagonist does get less annoying and the payoff is definitely worth it.

FLCL and Mawaru Penguindrum both seem right up your alley. FLCL is made by the same studio as Eva and Gurren Lagann, and has a lot of the better elements of both of those show, condensed down to 6 episodes. Penguindrum is a show by the guy who made Utena, and starts as a sort of light comedy, but with a hint of creeping darkness, until the entire facade of light-heartedness collapses away piece by piece.

From your list, you'll almost definitely really like Kaiji, which is pretty much the instant before you pull the trigger in a game of Russian Roulette crystallized and made into an anime.

Stick out Jojo, the first part is kind of generic, kind of simplistic, but also very short. You can skip to part 2 if you really aren't enjoying it, it starts at episode 10.

Also watch more of Masaaki Yuasa's shows. There are no bad ones just look up his wikipedia entry and pick something.

Ninja Scroll is a straightforward action movie with great animation, that anyone okay with some gore and sexual situations should enjoy.

I've only seen the Ruroni Kenshin OVAs, and don't remember much beyond thinking they were quite good. Watch for tormented souls going through more pain to do the righteous thing.

Noir was dull and slow, but I enjoyed it in its own way. It's one of the few anime I didn't consume in big chunks (i.e., only an episode every few days). A marathon would just be exhausting. It's more about the mood than action or plot (which is sparse). To this day I have some of the music on my iPhone (like the show itself, it's not exceptional but it sticks with you).

I am probably one of a few people that preferred the first Hellsing anime to the OVA (production values notwithstanding), but only for a few of the episodes. It falls apart somewhere around the midpoint, iirc. The budget problems become clear very early.

She has a pretty solid stable of soundtracks under her belt. .hack//SIGN, Tsubasa Chronicle, Noir, and Madlax are all decent but niche shows with good music. Mai Hime, Fate/Zero, Madoka, and Erased are all good. Sword Art Online is... Sword Art Online.

I've heard good things about Zaregoto and Princess Principal but haven't seen either yet. She's also done some more obscure stuff I haven't watched.

Some of my favorite songs by her are from her FICTION solo albums, though a lot of the songs are on the Japanese releases only so you're gonna need to grab some :filez: if you wanna listen, since Japanese media companies are super hardcore about cracking down on region-locked stuff on Youtube et. al.
