Not sure how long you've been playing, but just want to make sure you know your ship/progress is exactly the same in Open/Private/Solo modes. If you log off at a station in open play and switch to solo, you will still be right there with everything you had before.

Oh, okay, that makes a bit more sense now.
Guess I'll just play in solo until if/when I want to join a playergroup then.
Didn't realise it was shared progress.

You can press ctrl B to see what your connection is doing. If you get a spike in data while in open play then that means another player is near.

It's nice how it works to hop between all three instances, though, since you start exactly where you left off. It helps for some missions when looking for stuff and refreshing the items or NPCs in the area.

You only get the frog emblem if you play in open? That’s odd.

I just spent like half an hour trying to get an unknown probe to drop. Is there some magic to this poo poo? I just want to be able to drive into the thargoid base.

No, all modes are treated the same for all progress including CGs. All open/private/solo do is determine who you can instance with.

Obviously first of all you want to be in orbit of an ammonia world around Maia. The only trick is to make sure you don't cruise too slow, because that will lower your chance of seeing a USS. Just circle the planet quickly for 10 minutes and you should find the correct USS.

It will probably amaze you to hear that I'm playing solo and are part of a playergroup

(You can help out even while playing solo, solo mode doesn't immediately deinstall discord from your computer)

The real multiplayer in Elite is playing in whatever mode you feel like because you won't see anyone except at CGs or a handful of specific high traffic systems but having Discord on another monitor or as an overlay for the actual interaction.

The average is 5.5? I thought it was 4. This is very unsettling.
Exposing yourself to risk and getting ganked builds character. I've done maybe a dozen CGs in open and got ganked maybe three times. I've encountered polite pirates even more often, and it's a skill builder to learn reading your radar and contacts tab when jumping into a system.

Maybe an FDL, Cutter and/or FAS all clustered close to the drop-in? Quick scan show they're CMDRs? High-wake out. Get 'dicted? Well try and break the lock or drop in and try to evade and boost out. It's fun, gets your adrenaline pumping and if you lose a ship so what?

If you made a long trip to get to a CG system, maybe park in a station in a nearby system first.

Do you need a UA in your hold to get a UP degraded site to drop? The only sites dropping are the thargoid battle sites. I just skipped it and went to the base anyways to check it out. I’m just going to go back to 63g after this and space truck beer and watch the base poo poo on YouTube gently caress.

In my experience yeah, most players will have engineered weapons to punch through lower thermal resistances on your shields and so on but like with NPCs the best strategy is to submit to the interdiction and FSD the gently caress out (high wake if you want to be safest). I generally do a boost away then throw all pips to shields while my FSD spools up.

Powerplay exists on a whole other layer from the rest of the game and there isn't much to be done about it.

Unless I'm mistaken, Yuri Grom's powerplay bonus actually is beneficial to us. At least I thought I heard that at some point.

Stuff like this is generally available for purchase only around the holidays, but once you own them, nothing prevents you from dragging them out on midsummer's eve if that's how you feel like.

In the lower right corner of that window, there is a pushpin looking icon, that will make it stick. Took me a few tries to figure that out, they are kinda hard to see.

You have to enable the public test under the beta tab of Oculus settings, then with the new Oculus home you can bring up your desktop and grab and drag individual windows into VR.
