Isn't 3 armor considered to be very high, the kind of armor only heavily armored elite troopers should have? The front line Legion Assault Armor only has an armor class of 2, and that's described as "heavily reinforced armor" in the lore.

Well, that certainly bears out. I was just running Ghost Ship Carthage as written, and the two major fights in that have players up against enemies with 3 armor.

Luckily I learned my lesson from that. At least one of the players had a puncture rifle and could deal serious damage. Next time maybe no mega-armor except in special circumstances.

While it's generally a pretty good introductory scenario, Ghost Ship Carthage could really use one additional fight with a larger group of lightly-armored, mobile enemies to highlight that side of the mechanics. You could probably do something in the medical ward with overturned gurneys and malfunctioning equipment to create a decent battlefield.

Yeah, I agree. I actually ran a brief introductory session before Carthage that had a fight exactly like that, so we've had a chance to have multiple kinds of fights. If I hadn't, though, I think I'd be a lot more frustrated with the system because I (and my players) would only know how it plays against single, highly-armored enemies.

Now that we're done with Carthage I have to come up with another mission to keep them going since my players are still ironing out what their characters want to do, and having played both ways helps me know how to better balance things in the future.

So looks like we've got a timeline for the FE: expanded PDFs going out to backers who didn't just sign up to playtest and for the backerkit lockdown: Early november. So if you want to upgrade, probably best to do it by the end of the month.

So keeping this alive with news that Wade's working on another Fragged *** thing, this time Fragged Parousia, a small scale skirmish game.

"more deets posted:

My co-creator Alistair and I will be running demo games at PAX Aus this weekend (I will post a detailed timetable up later this week). The current plan is to do a soft launch early next year (free PDF rulebook +print on demand or print at home, cards), if things go well we will run a tight Kickstarter to print the cards and more minis.
So what is this game and where does will it fit into the busy miniatures game market?
* Parousia is a tactical miniature based game.
* It is designed to be a rules tight, competitive miniatures game for people who don't want to spend a lot of $$$.
Rules:
* The game will be played in a small area (60x60cm), divided up into 5 zones (centre and 4 corners), with each player controlling 3-5 characters.
* The object of the game is to complete 2 of your 3 Objectives, the first player to do so wins. (These objectives will focus around capturing zones, killing your enemy, and/or escorting/grabbing loot/VIPs). When a player completes an Objective they're able to hack the board or their opponent (gaining unique advantages and/or altering the gaming area).
* Each player will build a deck of Power Cards that can be used on your opponent's characters when you attack them (rolling a '6' allows you to play more).
* Players will also 'alter' their opponents composition by selecting 1 of their 3 Objectives, and by giving them a Negative Power Card that they must play at some point (they're forced to play this card if the miss, or if it is the last card in their hand).
Plot (WIP):
* Parousia is set within the Palantor Network, a vast digital pleasure universe inhabited by incredibly powerful digitized human minds. But they're under attack by Mechonids, corrupted and psychopathic digitized minds who wish to harvest you and force you to fight in the never-ending war in the physical universe. Your only hope is to escape the Palantor network, but robotic bodies capable of containing your vast mind are incredibly rare, leading/forcing many Palantor to turn on each other.
* Parousia is a reflection of this Palantor vs Palantor conflict.
* You're fighting to gain control over the last vestiges of this increasingly corrupted digital space by competing against other Palantor for control over gaming nodes.
* While you inhabit these nodes, you must obey its rules. But as the corruption of the Mechonids spreads, cracks are appearing, cracks that are not only allowing the Mechonids in, but are also allowing Palantor to hack the nodes and each other.
Factions:
* There will be 4 factions, one from each of the 4 Fragged settings: Empire (Sci-fi), Seas (Pirates), Aeternum (Gothic Horror) and Kingdom (Fantasy).

The skirmish game looked ok, I got to play a game of Kingdom with the developer, it seemed ok, it was very freeform so didn't seem like we were using the mechanics too much. Played some Aeternum as well, standard races except one was a vampire who's rage ability got a little bit crazy, and a clockwork soldier who was very cool, the momentum stuff was interesting, gave you a few more options for actions in combat, beyond move to cover > shoot > reload when necessary.

Not yet, I don't think. Just 'a week after backerkit closes'

If it's anything like the backerkit closure expect in the middle of the night US time, but hopefully with less random credit card declines.

Wait, Fragged Hacked? I know he was working on that, but I didn't see that anywhere on the Kickstarter, Backerkit, or DriveThru. Did I miss it somewhere?

I've been dying to see his take on integrating these system.

edit: the heck? I got emails for Aeternum, Seas, Kingdom, Antagonist/Protagonist Archive, all the adventures, short stories, and reference PDF. But I didn't get Hacked or the Core pdf itself. I know I selected the "gimme all the PDFs you got" option, but maybe something went weird because I backed during the Backerkit, not during the Kickstarter. I'll see if it shows up over the next day, then contact Wade if it doesn't.

Relevant to the discussion we were having a long time ago:

Wade posted:

Only the humans lived in a post-scarcity economy, the Archons were in need/want of more.

This is not canon, but I've always imagined that the Archons did social, as well as genetic, engineering. Which would result in many different economic/political/cultural styles... possibly even using these as a way to 'test' the viability of their creations (ie: maybe they threw some of their creations into very harsh situations as a way of 'forging them in fire' or as a way to test their robustness).

Whatever plot idea you go with, keep in mind that the Archons singular goal was to create the perfect creation, the X'ion (X'ion is a title btw).

Isn't that what Corp are kinda sorta meant to be? Been too busy to process all the books, or even skim them too far. I do like the new character creation changes, makes being good at something more obvious, though (un)lucky crits will hurt so much more.

The Corp are the closest, though I feel like each of the Fragged Empire races represent different or exaggerated parts of humanity, so the Corp are still an "incomplete" reflection of humanity where they're good at organization and economics and comparatively poo poo with more tangible matters. They're superficially more "human" but under the surface they're still somewhat alien - they don't really value things like family and selflessness, for example.

Not that the Corp are even in Fragged Kingdom.

Not that they’re 100% “normal” but I figure Corp were excluded because they make less conceptual sense given Kingdom’s conceits.

I mean specifically the absence of the Corp. Like yes, they aren't human, but they're visibly the most "human." There's no "normal lookin' human dude" option for Fragged Kingdom, which is interesting and fun.

Fragged Aeternum seems to have the strongest "What do we do with this" setting pitch of the three books so far, since by default you're part of the Tethered and do Tethered monster-hunter things.

Though yeah, a little more detail on the Natures would be nice to have.

There's certainly that. My assumption was that in-universe if you had Corp it would imply the planet had meaningful outside contact but I'm not gonna argue against having less of those stereotypes around as well.

Subjunctive posted:

There's a lot of historical precedent around persecuting people with those perceived characteristics in medieval times. It's pretty relevant in fantasy settings when you consider how most of those divide races by "role" to some extent or another.

I'd also love a full page explicitly stating in basic layman terms "ok this is how you make Spells, here are examples" instead of a paragraph on one page about "rituals use skill rolls, spells are traits," two examples in the mid-80s, and parsing out tables of FE-ese to figure out "OH you take Martial Magic and a Massive Melee weapon with an Arcane mod or Natural Caster for a Hefty Ranged weapon and grab an Arcane mod, OR flip to page 156 immediately and take the Spell variation for a Ranged weapon and grab a few Ranged weapons or one with multiple Arcane types."

Same for the Stances, even though those are more obvious.

I kind of want to play an actual Palantor in Fragged Kingdom who's got everyone convinced he's just a mysterious knight who never eats or sleeps or takes off his armor. Except if all the "Children of Pol" on the planet are mechanoids I imagine they'd zero in to eat him.

So apparently this came up in the comments on the kickstarter, and Wade's response was that basically Natures could represent several different things and depending on your take different natures might all be viable for the same concept, so basically look at the mechanical benefits and reskin as you see fit. You could do a tethered who doesn't care whether they live or die and just wants to fight the biggest poo poo with apex predator -or- martyr, etc.
