MorgaineDax posted:I don't think it had anything to do with sexual harassment, but obviously Maurice Hurley and Gates didn't like each other at all. She's been pretty open in interviews and at cons that she argued with him all the time about her character development and how Wesley always went to the men characters for advice, rather than his mom. Gates has said she didn't leave on her own, and found out from her agent that she'd been fired after the first season wrap party. I believe Hurley sexually harassing McFadden originally came out in the Engel book about Roddenberry, which near the end gets into the mismanagement during the first season of TNG. (This was also the book in which everyone first learned the name "Leonard Maizlish.")

So I've been watching Mad Men lately, and oh man, I want to read The Negron Complex. I love shows coming up with deliberately bad Trek episodes.

Does Crusher have any good episodes where she isn't acting as a space detective? She has several where she is. Maybe she should have been the science officer

I mean after Data goes to him for advice, he comes back to his friends with a bunch of painfully trite schtick that nobody likes and gets him nowhere and he has to figure it out on his own anyway. Yeah but it was still hard to watch. Maybe even tied for hardest Trek thing to watch with Crusher enjoying being raped.

Windows 98 posted:I’m just very upset they replaced my redheaded eye candy with some perm looking boring rear end lady. They already killed my pixie cut waifu. What’s next, Riker is gonna grow a beard and ruin that handsome face of his? The answer to this of course, as the answer to many issues with TNG, is to watch DS9, where there are pretty ladies who are also interesting characters.

There is something so depressing about the fact that this episode would fit right in on Voyager. To make it even worse, it would probably be a decent Voyager episode.

My favorite part is when Badger mentions Tullaberries being from Gamma Quadrant (which is correct) and Skinny Pete incorrectly goes "That's Voyager, dude!" It's Deep Space Nine, Skinny Pete. Voyager was Delta Quadrant.

dont even fink about it posted:Note that anything Susan Sackett says is generally total bullshit, and she probably has a shrine to Gene in her basement. Yep. The Fifty-Year Mission books are really great reads but anything from Sackett or Marc Cushman in them should be regarded as complete bullshit. But, I mean, that's par for the course with Trek tell-all books; even the excellent Inside Star Trek by Justman and Solow gets some pretty big factual details wrong (like the Roddenberry / Courage drama). Keep in mind, Sackett wrote a book a while back, about literally half the content of which was just short of pornographic in the level of detail she went into of "here are all the ways and the places Gene liked to gently caress me." I believe it makes no mention of sexual harassment, but does everything but. Usually any Susan Sackett quote throughout the book is nestled against 2-3 people directly contradicting her, and it becomes obvious listening to her quotes that she's carefully built up her own version of the truth about Gene.

Yeah, the way they lay the quotes out is amazing in that book. I had no idea who she was but the book made is pretty clear she's got a strong agenda of enforcing a certain official history that made gene look great and that trek had no dirty or dark side behind the scenes.

She was Gene's longtime secretary / mistress and absolutely believed that he could do no wrong. During the movie era, she would often storm into Gene's office and rile him up, screaming about "those sons of bitches, do you know what they want to do now," etc. She steadfastly denied having an affair with Roddenberry for ages, and then once he died she published her pornographic tome.

Yeah every one of her quotes is like: Person 1: "The month was a total disaster, Gene was drugged out of his mind and his health was failing, it was amazing everyone pulled together and got things finished" Person 2: "Oh god that was a horrible month, Gene wasn't doing well and would be wheeled in to ramble and make major production changes. We all would smile and nod then ignore his orders as soon as he left, it was terrible but it was the only thing we could do, he had totally lost it by that point." Susan Sackett: "If it wasn't for Gene's powerful healthy hands-on work during that month the lazy and jealous crew would have succeeded in tainting his vision. He had to constantly supervise everyone during that month as they were trying to sabotage production and spread rumous about his health"

Or whenever Rod Roddenberry is saying something. Guy 1: Oh, this dude was a total rear end in a top hat. Guy 2: Complete and total rear end in a top hat. Rod: I don't know why they say that guy was an rear end in a top hat. When I was a kid, he bought me toys.
