Any thoughts to Las Vegas for retirement? My dads almost 70(?) and the family would like to get him out of the Midwest to where there’s stuff to do and no snow.

I’ve heard some good things about Vegas retirement communities in that they’re affordable and nothing like actual Vegas just regular Californias that just wanted to escape the cost of living.

Hi! I'm going to Las Vegas in December for a week, work related. How much should I expect to spend on food daily? Assuming I have breakfast and dinner covered (hotel and conference respectively).

Edit: Actually, assume that breakfast isn't covered, because the hotel's doesn't look good.

Seems like a pretty open ended question. Depends on the level of food you want to eat. You can eat McDonald's or Subway all day or go somewhere for a decent meal for $20 or spend hundreds.

Which meal are you calling dinner? It's a word that can mean either the noon or evening meal depending where you're from.

Also, where are you staying/where is your conference? Most Strip hotel/casinos have a food court with your typical fast food options, buffets, usually a diner-style restaurant and some upscale restaurants. Plus room service.

Apparently I caught some corporate gently caress-up by Caesar's today... and they actually owned up to it!

I usually spend 7-10 days in Vegas around Christmas every year. I stay at the Linq (it's actually not bad), and usually get the whole thing comped, minus one or two nights and some resort fees. I remembered last year that they charged me for some nights, but I didn't think they were supposed to. I noticed this again this time around, and decided to look into it.

Basically, if you look at the booking calendar, you see it says my rate is $0 per night

but when I go to book my room, it shows some daily charges

and you even have to click a separate link to see that!

I called up their support, and they told me that it's their policy that you can only get comped 5 consecutive days max. I asked them where this was written, and they said it was right there on the page.... only, it wasn't. I kept repeating that it's not there, and the support person kept telling me "oh I'm sure it's on there."

I then dug through all the Total Rewards regulations I couldn't find a reference to this policy anywhere! I talked to one of the support managers, and he was like "uhhhh, yeah... I looked into it, and couldn't find it... I talked to legal, and it doesn't seem to be on there... so we'll honor the normal rates and try to get that fixed on our site." I've seen references to this policy on random forums dating back a couple years ago or more, so it seems like they've been screwing folks for awhile.

Anyway, if you're booking some longer comped trips to Vegas this year, make sure they're not screwing you over.

Since hotels and flights are cheap, food is often the most expensive part of a trip to Vegas. Well, depending on how much you like to gamble.

For all but the cheapest food, if you eat on the strip, you're going to pay a premium for food in Vegas compared to other parts of the country. Hell, sometimes even the fast food is marked up. If you spend a little effort, you can find cheap stuff though.

For midrange breakfast, I like Flamingo's brunch buffet and Hash House a Go Go. Either will run you around $20 per person, but will keep you full with decent food for easily half the day. For lunch or dinner, you can pay less than $10 for fast food, or you can go to one of the fancy burger places that every casino seems to have nowadays that'll usually run you about $25. If you look hard enough, you can find decent food at just about any price point, but it might take some effort and some walking. If you're willing to shell out some real money, you can eat at some of the best restaurants in the world.

That all being said, The Hard Rock isn't actually on the strip - it's actually like a 30 minute walk to get to the strip, plus however long it takes to get to whatever casino you're trying to get to. I haven't stayed at The Hard Rock, but the food options look pretty sparse around there. There's a free shuttle to the strip, but keep in mind that's gonna add a good bit of time anytime you want to go anywhere, so it'll be tough to pop out for a quick lunch or whatever. Is the conference at The Hard Rock, or somewhere else?

I will be in Vegas for the CES, working the Indiegogo stand, hit me up of you are there! Just look for the Dutch dweeb who looks lost.

Question: how feasible would it be for me to tack on a few vacation days, and go to the Salton Sea? This plan is mainly hampered by my lack of a drivers license :) Ubering there might be somewhat of a stretch.

Maybe a Vegas goon would like to go as well, if I take care of gas and whatnot? Maybe there is a secret bus service?

Flying back to Europe from San Diego is possible on option, if that helps any.

Vegas to Salton Sea is like a 4-5 hour drive, over some very remote desert highways with few services. I don't know that its a huge destination area from Vegas so I sort of doubt there is any organized transit there. I'm just speaking as a tourist from a different part of the US though, so maybe Vegas goons can confirm.

If you just want to see some US Southwest landscape, have you considered Lake Mead / Grand Canyon, both of which have plenty of tour options from Las Vegas?

Now is the time for us to gather together and celebrate those things that we like and think are fun.
My wife and I are planning a quick impromptu 72hr trip to Las Vegas between Christmas and New Years since we got a good deal on hotel and flights and I have a couple quick questions for recommendations.

For context, we don't really drink anymore or enjoy going to bars/clubs. I haven't been to Las Vegas since about a decade ago when I was a college student with the much different priorities of getting cheap booze and partying. My wife has never been, but her tee-totaling inlaws went years ago and still really enjoyed it hence we are giving it a shot anyways. Since most recommendations online don't seem to cater to us. I figured I'd give asking this thread a shot (plus an excuse to thank JaySB et al. for the advice through-out the thread)

A: We are getting $150 of MGM Resort credit, any recommendations on what MGM property restaurants to spend it at? We don't really appreciate really fancy / expensive food. We are staying at Mandalay Bay and we figured the dinner after we check in will be on property there (or close-by).

B. Any less-obvious recommendations of things to do? We wont have a car, so something close to the strip / short uber etc might be better?

Right now my tentative list of not just walking around the strip / seeing downtown once for the heck of it / gambling etc includes the Neon Museum , the Atomic Testing Museum, and the pinball hall of fame (didn't get to see that a decade ago, but I heard its not quite as good as it used to be).

C. No chance of Lotus of Siam reopening by then right? Last I heard its still months away. I was sick when the group I was traveling with went to it when I've last been in the city

D. Are the casino rewards / freebies / etc worse than they were a decade ago? I remember signing up at every casino we could since we were at an off time of year and got a bunch of free gambling money / random souvenirs.

I really enjoyed the Neon Museum and Pinball Hall of Fame. The Mob Museum is also good.

If you're downtown, go to the second floor of The D and check out the Sigma Derby! It's a coin operated mechanical horse raising game from the 80s that's crazy fun. It's a great way to burn a bucket of quarters with the family. There's one in the MGM as well.

If you head slightly off Strip to the Rio, KISS putt putt is pretty silly and fun.

Circus Circus has a whole theme park out back, if that's your thing.

Container park is a cool spot by downtown with lots of random food and shops in big shipping containers.

Yeah, some places will give you like, $10-20 in slot play if you sign up for a card, and I once got a free tee shirt, but that's about the best I've seen nowadays.

Going to be in Vegas Jan 5-8 for a friends stag party with about 8 friends. He said he just booked us in at Top Golf, $30 each and we get a $300 food and drink credit for 2 hours.

Anyone been there, is it any good? Any hidden fee's? I'm going to guess the $300 credit isn't going to take us very far.

I haven't been to the Goldcoast in a while but when I went it was pretty underwhelming and outdated. I'd recommend the Palace Station if you're set on that area. It's in between those two and they recently built a new bingo room and remodeled the casino. It's decently sized, clean, and has a full bar and snacks and food if that's your thing.

I've done this a bunch of times, my only advice is to go earlier than you think because direct sun in the desert feels a lot hotter than you'd think while you're hiking. Though if its that cool you're probably fine. When I go out there in spring/fall, I try to be done hiking by like 10-11am

If you were already learning towards renting a car, I would say drive the rental through, especially if you enjoy slowly cruising around winding roads. Red rock has several trails that vary in difficulty, so you might want to check on a trail map to get an idea of what would appeal to you.

Also maybe consider valley of fire if you're into checking out desert rocks. Red rock is nice if you just want a smaller morning jaunt that's 20 minutes from the strip. Valley of fire has a lot more variety but it will eat up half your day.

If you want to really make a full day of it, valley of fire, lake Mead and Hoover Dam make a pretty good round trip.

I don't golf but I enjoyed spending an hour at top golf. Drink prices are a little higher than most other basic bars in Vegas, if I remember correctly, but 300 should buy a few rounds for 8 guys. I think there's an initial sign up fee (like 5 or 10 bucks per person), after that you just pay by the hour for however many bays you're renting.

Yeah - I need to get a handle on which restaurants I need to hit up on next year's December trip to Vegas.

December in Vegas owns, it's cheap as hell, there are $10 blackjack tables at nice places (Aria) and reservations at the top restaurants are not hard to come by at all. It's like a Vegas cheat code for old married people.

I'm going to be visiting after New Year's, any suggestions? I'm a cheap bastard so mostly planning on places like Peppermill or Ellis Island, though Herbs and Rye's happy hour is on my list. (I might do something fancy one night if I'm winning, but I won't be packing fancy clothes)

I'll be staying downtown (which I've never really explored aside from playing a little poker at the Golden Nugget). I'm planning to hit the Laundry Room and Atomic, check out the long bar at the D, and play some cheap roulette at El Cortez.

(I enjoy roulette but rarely play since the prices on the strip are so high.)

Aside from exploring downtown I'll play some poker as well (main point of the trip) and probably hit the Neon museum at some point.

Open to suggestions on the strip as well... the plan is to get a 3 day pass for the Deuce and hit poker rooms up and down the strip. No firm plans (going to see what Bravo says has a low wait) aside from definitely checking out the 1/2 at the Bellagio at some point. Possibly doing a tournament at Aria - I want to do at least one poker tourney while I'm in town in addition to the 1/2 tables.

I dunno - I'm not super budget conscious, except I gamble at low stakes tables and travel during times when hotel prices are cheap (I go once a year basically, always in the first or second week of December). All of the gambling referenced below was at $10 or $25 tables only. Recommendations - the shows are cool and fun, the restaurants can be ridiculously awesome and it's generally a lot of fun. However, not super easy to do on a budget.

I was in Las Vegas last weekend and the trip was basically:

Friday
Arrive at noon
Work in hotel room until about 6:30
Gamble a bit
Dinner @ Olive (very meh)
Saw Absinthe @ Caesar's (highly recommend - best show I've seen)
Gamble more

Saturday
Wake up and work until about 4pm
Gamble a bit
Dinner at Lemongrass (very good)
Gamble some more
Lady Gaga Concert
Gamble some more

Sunday
Brunch at Mon Ami Gabi (sweets are very good, savory is meh)
Some shopping (one day I will get a Bruno Cucinelli blazer)
Gamble
Dinner @ Joel Robuchon (literally the best meal of my life, go do this)
Head downtown and support the new owner of the Rockets by giving him money at Golden Nugget
