I love that Carlton is a fan of Trump.

In fairness back then that veneer of being successful was still working for Donald, back then he was just a harmless public figure who came off as a bit of a moron. I'm not even sure the "tried to bully Marla Maples into an abortion" thing was public knowledge yet.

At least they waited until the last episode for that poo poo.

There's a few issues with Fresh Prince but most of it isn't social stuff that makes you go "Huh".

-Vivian being played by a different actress, apparently because the original and Will had creative differences, specifically that she wanted to write and direct some episodes and she's convinced Will got her fired for it. The replacement lady is fine but holy poo poo do they ever look different. I am a bit curious about what she had in mind for the show, though.

-I feel like Carlton and Hillary both got very little character development. Carlton's still a conniving, arrogant dick with very little self-awareness. Hillary is still a super vapid self involved ditz. It feels like everybody got to grow on the show except them. Phil lightens up, Vivian becomes a bit more even handed with Will, Geoffrey becomes less of a cliche, and Ashley grops in the way you'd expect somebody would from the age of about 10 to their late teens.

-Nicky going from like, 10 months old to being like 5 in the span of a season. They actually got a bit 4th wall about this and made a joke about it, but I found it super weird.

They also did a 4th wall joke about Vivian's actress change too once. She and Jazz are both in the kitchen doing whatever, and he gives her a sideeye, and then says "man....something about you just seems so different since you had that baby..." This may have resulted in a "throw Jazz out the door" gag. And speaking of that running gag, I think the fact that the clips were so brief, about half the time you'd expect on a sitcom to go with the gag, is what kept them so funny. Like, it'd cut him off mid scream and last maybe a second tops.

Yeah the sad thing about the aunt Viv thing is that the original actress was this regal as gently caress, dark skinned lady, which was really cool. And then they replaced her with this light skinned lady with much less presence. She has alleges that Will Smith on the reg and continuously mocked her skin color in front of the audience before tapings. But she also has a reputation for being very difficult.

It did give us one of the greatest meta moments in history though.

Remember Donald Trump's cameo

Apparently he used to demand a small cameo as a condition of allowing people to film in any of his hotels or other properties. People would say "sure, whatever", film the scene, then immediately edit it out (or sometimes they'd just pretend to film it then tell him later that "whoops guess the camera went wrong and we don't have time to re-shoot it"). Occasionally the scene would get left in, like Home Alone 2.

It also shouldn't be a surprise that before the Apprentice show the guy was mostly known for being famous (and wealthy and a bit of a buffoon). It's not exactly a rocket science, or unheard of, why a celebrity endorsing poo poo as his main line of business keeps appearing everywhere.

It’s a shame because you rarely see dark skinned women on TV. Even on TV shows where most of the cast are black, they are never the lead roles. Original Aunt Viv seemed cool and fierce, and her dance episode was awesome.

While not TV, back in early 2004 the dance school I was at did a show that I think was sponsored by the local mall? All the dances were themed around different stores in the mall so there was one for Disney Store and Sunglasses Hut and McDonalds and whatever and it was really tacky and grim. Then the next year a new, better mall opened a few streets over and half of all the good stores moved to there and then two years after that the financial crisis hit and pretty much all the rest of them closed down and now the mall is more or less dead and the dance show DVD serves as a really weird time capsule to the time before the mall died.

Also one of the dances was Jake the Peg and that hasn't aged well either.

I find the most dated thing about watching the early Simpsons seasons now is all the commentary on television culture and journalism. Part of it is I didn't really pick up on it when I saw it as a kid but also how little commercial television we watch now because of Netflix and the like.

Watching a bunch of kids doing a weird swooping interpretive dance to Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) is etched into my mind more than a decade on, but I think you're imaging a much more entertaining dvd than it really is. It's just really weird seeing all the old stores and thinking oh yeah there was a H&M in the old mall and Virgin Music was a thing back then....and they sponsored our dance show for some reason?

It's worth noting that women, and especially women of color, tend to get reputations for being "very difficult" in Hollywood because they catch horrible poo poo and fire back instead of just sitting there and taking it. It's entirely possible that her allegation and her reputation are pretty intertwined here, especially given that it's Will loving Smith she's angry at.

Yes but she had also said that if a reunion was to happen she wouldn't be part of it.
I was just watching the E! Hollywood True Story on The Coreys and boy is it awkward to watch knowing how severely abused they were. Like every time a dude who worked with them was in the picture all I can think is "Did you do it or if not, did you know?"
At one point they for some reason show a picture of Correy Haim in just his underwear.
