Is collins going to grab the unused hall pass on tax reform?

They're going to have to rename it if Moore wins.

What do the numbers look like if the US had mandatory voting? I know we'd gain a lot of youth and minority votes, but there are a lot of middle-aged white puds who've spared us their contributions to the electorate out of sheer laziness.

Nationwide, the Dems probably win every presidential election for the foreseeable future. In Alabama specifically, mandatory voting would probably still lead to Republicans winning because there are so drat many of them

I'm no longer going to give any Republicans the benefit of the doubt until they actually cast their vote against the bill.

On the plus side, Collins and Murkowski are getting consistently ratiod (ratioed?) on their twitter feed. Sadly, McCain is not for some reason...

The lazy ones are usually the ones who would lean democratic, so I think it'd be an overall good thing. Republican-leaners, in my experience, tend to be the "Ah don know gently caress all about politics, but am gonna go vote anyway it's mah right!"

That's extremely low for a federal election - their usually more in the ~80-85% range when you go a month back.

DD: Fondly regard abomination.

OK, here's my cynical prediction. +4-6 win to Moore. Democrat turnout levels will be extremely high, and independents will break heavily Democrat, but Republican turnout will be unaffected or possibly even elevated and Alabama is red enough that they'll win through weight of numbers.

If this turns out to be true, then I'll be cautiously optimistic. It will mean the huge blue turnout we saw in Virginia wasn't a fluke, and that by itself should be enough to win any state that could remotely be considered a battleground. It will also be the official death knell of any electoral strategy built around trying to get Republicans to break away from the party - if they won't do it for an unrepentant child molester, then they won't do it under any circumstances. It will block us out from the Senate in 2018 because there are only two remotely vulnerable senators - we need to get this seat in order to have a chance - but we have a pretty good chance of breaking the House gerrymander and tying the Senate, followed by a blue wave in 2020.

If Moore wins by 10+ points, then I'm officially retiring my post-Virginia optimism and going back to full-on nothing matters mode. If it's an extremely close race with substantially reduced Republican turnout, then it shows that even Alabaman Republicans can be dragged out of their fake news bubble with sufficient effort, which is valuable information. If Jones wins then the Senate is officially in play and I'm drinking tonight.

I don't think you can reasonably glean much about what 2018 races will be like off of this one either way, it's the only race going on and everyone's paying attention to it individually. There will be tons of races november 2018.
