Yeah, I bought it. It's me. I like the trashy junk on occasion. The Higurashi set was the main reason though. I needed chapters 2-5 so $10 is a steal. This brings my backlog of VNs up to 62 I don't even want to think how many hours that's gonna be.

The translation for If My Heart Had Wings is insanely bad. At its best it reads like bad engrishy manga scanlations and at its worst it's actual gibberish.

Personally, I decided to start a Gamefly subscription last month because I blow through games quickly, and I can get four months of Gamefly for one $60 game. Plus most games I play have limited replay value, so it works out really well for me. My point is, Gamefly stocks VNs (I got Chaos;Child through it), and if you really want C;C, it might not be a bad idea to do a trial free month and get through C;C. Hopefully you can find a way to play it, it's been a ride. I've played one and a half of the routes now, and I'm really liking the fact that they don't even try to stay close to the plot of the main route. They basically branch off completely and change events so much (to the point where I wonder why initially small changes change the outcome so drastically) that you really can't predict what will happen. They kind of use your preconceptions about knowing what's going on behind the scenes against you, and I'm enjoying that enough to not worry about the logic of the shifts. They go to some pretty dark places to, as my favorite non-canon routes do.

Well, the Robitics;Notes anime was pretty bad at least. Anyway, what I was more trying to get at now is that looking back on their overall catalog they just have had a lot more misses than hits (in fact, just one barring Child being also good) and I kind of feel like S;G 0 was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I finished Muv-Luv Alternative. It was pretty good though if I have a major complaint it's that the game is just too long. I mentioned the many science conversations dragging on a bit, but also I feel like in the buildup to the reveal what happened to Sumika with the BETA had a lot of repetitive scenes of Takeru asking people the same questions and having the same revelations over and over again, and if I'm gonna be honest the game probably had one big BETA operation too many. Also the gang of what I can only assume were more Rumbling Hearts characters had a bit of a "Shrike Team from Victory Gundam" feel to them. There's just a lot of fat on here in a way that Extra and Unlimited just didn't have. I'm not sure how much I'd commit to this view myself, but I think you could make a legitimate argument that Alternative is the worst executed part of the trilogy, at least in the second half or so of the game. That isn't to say its bad though, I found Alternative overall to be a very good and enjoyable experience. I think it probably needed a bit more polish though. Also it would be fun in Super Robot Wars. Raxivace fucked around with this message at 04:38 on Dec 15, 2017 |

Dr. Video Games 0031 posted:Have they patched up the absurd amount of typos and grammar errors in C;C yet? I know PQube released a patch a few weeks after release but that only fixed a handful of them. I just played through it in the last 2-3 weeks, and while I did notice some typos/grammar errors, I would say it was fewer than 8-10 throughout as much of the game as I've played (about 3/4ths). That could just be the fact that I didn't notice them, since the mind tends to be able to fill in gaps if you're not paying close attention to smaller typos. I thought they mostly did a good job, very few of those errors were glaring, barring one exception (subtitles not being present for one line of spoken dialogue towards the end of the game). Also, yeah, I looked into Chaos;Head a bit more (haven't played it) and it definitely seems like a hot mess compared to C;C. Again, some cool ideas with potential, but a lot of serious issues. I mentioned that the protagonist from C;C (Takuru) was a lot better than the one from C;H, but I think I understated the difference; C;H's protagonist is an extremely creepy shut-in who somehow lives in a shipping container with his collection of waifu's (anime figurines), one of whom "talks" to him on a regular basis. Compared to him, Takuru is a mature, well-adjusted social butterfly with robust friendships and fulfilling hobbies. I mean, granted that that's not really saying much, but Takuru is an infinitely more sympathetic and interesting character whose flaws are rooted in a massive earthquake that traumatized basically everyone in Shibuya. That being said, I actually really like the idea of "weak" protagonists, especially in stories like C;H, since it heightens the feeling of terror and helplessness. Throwing a an already unstable, unsympathetic protagonist with a tenuous grasp on reality into the events surrounding a series of brutal murders is a great premise, but there's such a thing as going too far. I would really try to hold off on judging C;C based on C;H. I know that's obviously impossible if you've played and hated C;H, but C;C is legitimately an excellent game. Again, this is only a personal theory with no real evidence, but C;H was the first game in the whole series, and the developer probably regretted not being able to accomplish what they wanted to with C;H. I could easily see C;C as being an attempt to take an excellent premise from a flawed VN and give it the resources it deserved. This is not to say that C;C is just C;H recycled into a prettier package with cosmetic changes, it definitely isn't.

I don't mind awful shitheads being protagonists, but all of my time with C;H was nothing but the protagonist being a weirdo and little else even after several hours of gametime and I just couldn't take it anymore. FWIW you've definitely made me more interested in giving C;C a chance at some point whereas before I was content with just skipping it.

Ahaha, holy gently caress do these side-routes go off the rails in the most exciting and bat-poo poo ways. "So for Kazuki's route, we should definitely make sure the player gets a chance to know her better, but why can't we do that via (spoilers from side-route, almost entirely unrelated to main plot) a pandemic causing a supernatural portal device to materialize and then transport horrible things (including a gigantic, head-eating dragon from a fictional MMO) into the real world, where they proceed to do exactly what you would expect them to?" And I've only just started the route. 3D GAY WORLD fucked around with this message at 07:35 on Dec 15, 2017 |

It's kind of a moot point though because VLR will take you a while and ZTD after that will just make you swear off VNs forever. e: also the murder mysteries of DR 1 and 2 can be fun but the plot for both is pretty garbage. DR3 has a really great plot (in my opinion at least - it's kinda love it or hate it) and weak mysteries but the whole thing that it does probably falls flat if you haven't slogged through the first two games.

Stefan Prodan posted:I kinda wish ZTD had never come out and I could just imagine what the third game might be like instead tbh It really should have ended with the Radical-6 ending and scrapped the whole Delta poo poo for something that actually...I don't know...worked, and wasn't awful in every way except a cheeky anagram in the game title. The Luna/Phi stuff was interesting but there has never been a story where a long lost evil twin is a compelling plot point, and ZTD is no exception. There's enough good scenes in it that I'm glad we got it, and tonally it's pretty solid, but yeesh that final ending was underwhelming. The way everything fit together at the end left it really open for future games though - not just Delta leading everybody against the ultra psychic terrorists or whatever, but (this is kind of going out on a limb here based on ZTD and VLR in the context of each other) there's probably a team of people in the doomed future who are stuck on earth in the Mars sim complex. After all, doesn't that make more sense than having access to space travel in the post-apocalypse? Sigma knows about the teleporter from the events of ZTD, unless I'm mistaken and he never finds it in the apocalypse route. I know we're probably never going to get another one but I really just don't want the whole series to end on such a wet fart.
