I really wish there was an easier way to learn to rocket jump. I've spent quite a few hours on jump maps and playing soldier and my fingers/brain just can't do whats needed to chain the jumps so you go flying around the map. Its cool being able to see a bot do a jump but it would be even cooler to see a bot of a jump you just performed. I need to get an outside look on what I'm doing so I can correct it. Is there a map that has this kind of feature?

If you're doing a rocketjump off the ground, jump and imagine you're turning to the right side (or left if your viewmodels are flipped) and putting the gun right behind your heels. When you crouch you're pulling your knees up. Jump turn crouch fire. It becomes second nature after a while but that's the way I've visualized it, you want to make sure the expanding sphere of the rocket blast is behind and below you so the line from the explosion's epicenter to your rear end cheeks is aligned with your desired trajectory. This also applies when you later want to rocket jump off of walls. Remember the rocket actually comes out of the side of the screen, not the center, unless you're using the Quake gun, which makes sticking the rocket under your rear end that much easier. Don't press W or you'll decelerate.

Oh yeah I can do the basic stuff okay enough its the more advanced pogos and stuff like that I just cant wrap my head around. I know the answer is to just practice but I have like 300 hours on soldier and I still mess up even the simple advanced techniques. Stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhfVR1QB7t0&t=120s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhfVR1QB7t0&t=304s I can't do it man, just can't do it. Makes me sad inside. I wanna fly with the eagles.

All that fancy stuff is nice, but here's a vid with some nice solid basic stuff, so you might not know, some you probably will. It shows off a few pogos, and I imagine just getting some of this stuff down and getting into fights with it will help to quickly pick up the other stuff too. He does a little pogoing and shows off some wall jumping stuff that looks pretty neat but is quite easy to pull off too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XT9iFW_F41E

Also having a button bound to +jump;+duck can help a lot. Almost every kinda rocket jumping and market gardening is so much easier to do when you're crouched, and not having your hand mangled by pushing down two buttons already makes air strafing so much easier.

edit: Actually you'll probably know that stuff already but someone else might find this stuff useful at least. I guess I shoulda watched your video first.

Pyro is so broken now, it's hilarious. Just grab the Backburner and the jetpack, go to a Payload or CP map, and get 3x the damage done by anyone else on the server without any effort whatsoever.

With the patch that dropped today? One of the things is it should fix the Backburner bug.

The Backburner bug is irrelevant. With the jetpack and the new particles counting full damage on any contact, you can just drop down on anyone and spray everywhere to kill them in a second flat. Don't even have to aim, just whirl your mouse around randomly.

I've cleared carts and points with 5+ people on them like this.

im disputing the claim that the flame particles deal full damage on contact which is not true, but i do agree they should adjust it so that sweeping like that isnt almost as effective as focus firing

FalloutGod

Backburner is baby stuff. Try the phlog with the new flames. Add a medic that knows to heal a phlog in progress and you'll destroy the entire team. The server I usually play on has a problem where 70% of pyros are using it and there isn't anybody can do. You can airblast em back to some success but more often then not they'll just run from one enemy to the next leaving body after body.

So this is probably kind of a dumb question, but I stopped playing TF2 back around one of the latter initial class updates when they did a bunch of them over the course of a couple years; the gently caress is this game now? It was already kind of trending towards 24/7 custom map servers and weird stuff like that, rather than the eternal hell fire of Gravel Pit that was the Orange Box release, but to my understanding they've just kept adding poo poo?

I guess my two questions are people have been saying TF2 is dead/dying for years now, I assume that's not true, and if I want to just kind of play around in the weird FPS sandbox that the game has become, rather than say, payload all day, is the community/servers accommodating to that?

fakeedit: I think I might have even made this exact post in the last TF2 thread like four years ago because gently caress time jesus christ.

yeah the game is free so it will likely never die, it's definitely the best available free FPS game and easily the one with the biggest already existing community of weirdos.

x10 and randomizer servers might be your jam. x10 makes every weapon ridiculously overpowered or insanely impractical with no middle ground and it's really fun testing different combos. randomizer means you can spawn as a heavy with a blutsauger and a gunslinger. there are servers that combine these two gamemodes, too. i love randomizer, personally.

if you're looking for more normal, there's always koth harvest, badlands, hightower, etc. where most people will ignore the objective and just frag all day long. for more out there maps, there's a few flavors of mario_kart and cp_orange always up.

learning rocket jumping and/or surfing is an entire game in itself and has its own community with a bunch of different servers always up too.

Orv

Yeah I put in a sort of staggeringly stupid amount of time on one of the faux-KOTH maps years ago that was just a silo with two bases set into the walls with windows facing each other, so doing that and learning to spy again seems like a good time in TYOOL 2017. Thanks.

Yeah that uh, hm. I guess now I know how the Aztecs felt when Cortez came calling.

Played a bit of Hightower instead, which was environmentally familiar but still induced a pretty much constant state of confusion. It didn't help that the server I was one skips the kill cam so I could never examine any items I was being killed with, but man.

So now I've got two new questions; melee demoman seems like my jam to some extent, and I definitely saw a claymore and a targe but now there's like fifteen other melee demoman items? What am I looking at there? I sold all my TF2 inventory ages ago, which leads into my other question, how do I actually get items now?

ArfJason
Sep 5, 2011
the uh i guess official way is that you play and get items randomly from the drop system

the better saner way to get what you want is like, if you have any leftover items, you turn them into scrap and trade that with one of the trillion trade bots

That would be the Eyelander and the Chargin' Targe, or the Tide Turner.

Just buy a key, sell it to scrap.tf for metal, and then use their auto-buy functionality to get all the weapons you don't currently own.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Doing the contract system going at the moment isn't a bad way to unlock more stuff, since the way the new skins work you can choose what weapon you want the skin applied to. (note that, despite confusion on this note, the new War Paints give you a new weapon of your choice with the paint applied, they aren't applied to existing weapons)

Orv

Did I misread or is there some kind of CS:GO style pass for those?

Tiny Aorta Fairy
Dec 16, 2017
You're right, there's a $6 Jungle Inferno campaign pass which unlocks the contracts to get war paints. Without the pass you can only do the contracts to get the new weapons introduced in the Jungle Inferno update.

He means he saw the claidheamh-mòr. He probably got confused by the load of other demo weapons, such as the cutlass I forget the name of or the handgrenade I forget the name of.

Go to wiki.teamfortress.com and get reacquainted with everything. Even the weapons you remember are probably hilariously different now.

Every time I play casual matchmaking for a bit, then decide to leave, the game yells at me for leaving early and says I'm gonna get a matchmaking ban (sucks if I need to go take a dump), and this includes when I try to quit while the map is changing

What exactly is the kosher, intended time to stop playing?

I'm pretty sure there is no penalty for leaving in casual, I just get that "You cannot rejoin this match" message every time I leave. And I haven't actually heard of anyone being punished for leaving since they changed it.

Edit. Just looked up the message, apparently it's just a remnant from the MyM update a year ago? In any case, don't worry about it, there's no penalties for leaving in casual.
