The movie avoids it because Rey is a role model and merchandise seller, so a heel turn cannot happen, despite it fitting the story.

Kylo is literally the lanky, awkward bully in the group of bullies who gets hit a lot and kinda laughs it off but resents it. Then he murders the bully.

Revelry in the Dark

I thought this was a really good movie. Visually it was a beautiful movie, some shots that come to mind:

Rey training with the saber and then the lightsaber. Some of the wide shots chosen for that scene were beautiful

Luke staring down the entire First Order fleet. Calls back what he had said earlier about legends and was really something profound I think

The last shot of Luke being alive was a direct call back to the first shot of a Luke in a New Hope with the two setting suns. That was a powerful moment

I think this could have benefited from being cut like 15 to 20 minutes though. I also have thoughts on how it turns the typical plucky Star Wars moments of converting the miracle every time on its head, but I’m tired and might write about it later

I liked how they took the time to explain that they couldn't just FTL outta there because the FO would just follow them and they'd be out of fuel.

But then they don't even bother to explain why the First Order can't call for reinforcements to cut them off, or swarm the cruiser with the surely thousands of tie fighters they have.

But Kylo didn't want to "leave behind the caste system", just like Anakin didn't; he wants to be the architect of a new world, not a comrade. He's an authoritarian revolutionary, not a populist one. I also understand peoples' sympathies, though, and so does Johnson.

Honestly I think it's less "Rey is the villain" and more "the script is kinda confused and simultaneously wants to have its cake and eat it too".

“Wants to have it’s cake and eat it too” is an accurate summation of every Rian Johnson project so far.

Episode IX will 100% end with Kylo redeeming himself by committing seppuku and finally literally killing his demons. It fits the story the character and the samurai arc.

I find thinking about the logistics of the war stuff in all these new Star Wars bizarre, so I just haven't. It feels like the First Order is supposed to be a small, scrappy-but-dangerous bunch of Imperial remnants with a couple superweapons and Sith in their back pocket sometimes, and a galaxy-conquering monster more powerful than the original Galactic Empire at other times. Like the plot of this movie makes sense if the First Order really isn't that big or all-powerful, but if that's the case, how are they winning the war so easily?

It doesn't seem to matter to the filmmakers, so I'm just erring on the side of not giving a poo poo about it either.

I think that kinda thing shows that Luke ultimately succeeded in destroying the Sith; if Snoke was a proper Sith Lord he'd probably have a way tighter leash on his apprentice at this point than that. Look at all the leverage Palpatine had over Vader. Kylo Ren is a dangerous and destructive product of incomplete training, Jedi and Sith.

We still haven't seen any of the Knights of Ren, presumable the other apprentices Kylo took with him. Are they gonna be a boss rush for the last movie?

I think it's meant to be established that the First Order are Empire remnants that disappeared into unexplored regions to loot and plunder, outside the scope of the fledgling New Republic, building and improving on old Imperial designs and plans while the Resistance is the ageing, underfunded remnants of the Rebel Alliance that the New Republic doesn't want threatening a hard-won, fragile peace. The idea is basically if fleeing Nazis had properly conquered Argentina and built a new empire out of looting South America while there was no Cold War equivalent to occupy the rest of the world in military build-up, and they they nuked Washington or something.

I think he can hear you, Ray.
For anyone saying "Oh Rey should've joined Kylo": when your speech ends with "And together we can rule the galaxy." then you're not exactly showing off noble intentions.

I don't think the movie resets their characters like some people think. It pushes them to the point of no return. Kylo no longer has doubts or conflict and Rey stops trying to define herself with her parentage and accepts who she is.

Killing off Snoke implicitly forces them to not copy the climax to Jedi in the third part, which is where all this seemed to be heading.

This was a very mediocre movie. Definitely felt like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be. Also felt like none of the enemies had any menace. The First Order is comically incompetent, Kylo Ren is a whiny pissbaby, and Snoke went from a mysterious unknown power to just a fugly dude in a chair.

Holdo's hyperspeed jump through a bunch of First Order ships was extremely loving cool but like... the Resistance had been evacuating its support ships one by one anyway so they could have just used one of those almost immediately?

Natural and neutral are different words with different meanings. Saying something is natural does not mean it is good or neutral. Death is natural for example. Wouldn't say it was neutral or good.

Rey joining Kylo is not good morally. He will fix nothing in the galaxy. But it is the more interesting story choice. The structure of the movie up to that point suggests it will happen, giving Rey and the audience reasons to decide the Republic/jedi are poo poo.

I am suggesting it doesn't happen because they have movies and merch to sell, not because of story reasons.

I pictured it more like the end of WW1 into WW2. The Empire is Germany and the Republic is France. Both sides were exhausted after a long war with huge costs and while the Republic won, it was at a heavy cost. While the Republic tried to rebuild it's economy and put the galaxy back together, the First Order (now literal Nazis) doubled down on military production then struck before the other side was prepared at all to deal with the consequences. They're now blitzkrieging their way through the galaxy unexpectedly while the resistance is now essentially the French Resistance. All but broken in occupied territory, yet still able to do some sabotage damage here and there.

I think the temptation to have Ray join Kylo was extremely effective. The romantic arc/tension drives a truly conflicted villain who is ruined by the failures of adults in his life.
There were quite a few scenes in this movie where they could’ve gone both ways and that means characters were given nuance and wants that conflicted with their needs.

But Kylo fucks it up for himself in the language of the film: he tells Ray ‘People think you are trash, everyone looks down on you, but I don’t!’ In a way that’s ultimately unacceptable. We’ve seen that Ray is uncompromising: she spends the entire first half of the movie standing up to the person she is allegedly seeking training from. Much more than the first film, this is revealed to be a flaw.

I think the mercenary code breaker is a fascinating character. We’re coded to think of him as a Han Solo but ultimately he refuses morality because he’s lived through several galactic wars in his lifetime and just wants to get paid. The scene where he uses the necklace to fix the panel is amazing, you get a sense that if the rebels had more money he would be a good guy.

This is by far my favorite Star Wars movie because it creates a symphony from the black-and-white keys of the force. Everyone is a variation of arrogant, courageous, and capracious; Tons and tons of average people are caught up in the struggle.

I feel like modern directors have all just forgotten how to make movies. Give us a compelling story! A core group of characters with conflicting, realistic motivations! Do it under two hours and don't waste everybody's time! Kylo Ren is the only interesting new character in this entire trilogy because he has clear motivations and flaws that drive his actions forward in a plausible way. Everybody else is just so goshdarn good that there's nothing believable about them or spend their time coming up with snappy Whedonesque quips as they run circles around the bumbling space fascists. You spend two years building up the return of Luke only to have him sit around on an island the whole time and get merked via force exhaustion, with a twist about as shocking as that time Tassadar faked out Kerrigan in Starcraft 1. This was a weak script even for a Star Wars movie, and the writing was not strong enough to keep a strong grasp on all the characters old and new. TFA was derivative as hell but it at least had a consistent tone and plot structure. It just kind of seemed like this new director wanted to take the series in a different direction but didn't have the vision of Kershner or Kasdan to connect the arcs back to the first. Not good! I hope the Disaster Artist is fun because that's my last hope of seeing a good film in a theatre in 2017.

The greatest superpower of our world has lost pallets of money and crashed battleships into coastlines due to lack of training resources.

Giant fascist systems don’t arise because they are inherently talented, it’s because they are vicious, and this movie proves that.

One of the biggest lapse in my screening came with Hux found a downed Kylo Ren and reached for his blaster, but immediately put it away when Kylo stirred.
