I'm only sort of half-following what's happening today but it sounds pretty messed up?

Like May agreed some sort of deal, Arlene gave a press conference, the two of them spoke, then May went back in and said there'd be no deal. Something like that?

Uhhhhhh so no hard border between either NI and Ireland, or the island of Ireland and GB. So I guess this means that any deal reached in the next Phases is going to have to honour that.

Seems like magical thinking which will fall apart in the technical negotiations, imo. Still, at least it is confirmation for Tory idiotfuckers that Brexit means Brex-poo poo

Kinda looking down at you guys with envy from up here in the Black North. Can’t quite remember the t8me we could say something as simple as “Yeah, our government did a good job there.”

Wasn't this pretty much a promise from the Tories that there wouldn't be a hard border and not anything actually written down. Is there anything that will stop them from reneging on it tomorrow especially with them so reliant on Arlene.

Well it's a written agreement from the UK that they're not going to gently caress things up in the Trade Deal negotiations.

Like, basically, from what I'm seeing, it's just going to end up with the UK remaining in the single market, except now they're paying for it and have no say in anything which happens in it.

Good work by Leo I guess, have to grudgingly give him that. The UK is pretty much bound to a soft Brexit now, unless the swivel eyed loons stage a coup and go for a no-deal Brexit.

Hopefully. Its pretty cowardly.

It really exposes the divide between their historical, rural border county, conservative Catholic vote and their new, urban, working class socially liberal socialist aspirations.

How conservative are Northern Sinn Feiners? I always thought the really hard-line conservatives were the DUPers (or Unionists in general).

When it comes to attitudes to abortion Unionist voters aren't significantly different in attitude to Nationalist voters, polling has usually shown that public opinion favours legalisation for cases for rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality - there is a significant number of DUP voters who disagree with the blanket opposition to reform from the party inner circle who vote for them regardless as they are "good for Unionism".

SF has traditionally erred on the side of caution and though they have never called themselves pro life are keen to remind voters they don't like abortions, a lot of SFs policy changes have been reactive when it became apparent public opinion supported it. The SDLP, who traditionally have a close link to the Catholic middle class, is officially pro life and has struggled with maintaining this to some degree while retaining their status as a centre left party - losing almost half their councillors in Belfast City Council after they tried to whip a vote in favour of a motion criticising protests outside abortion advice centres.

SFs ambitions up North involve becoming the sole party of Catholic political representation and they have been cautious not to trod on the Churches toes to achieve that - their education policy that supports more desegregated education but still protects the interests of the Catholic maintained sector equally shows their attempts to keep traditionalists and radicals happy with mixed results.

For example regarding education there was a successful court challenge against the SF education minister's decision a few years back to close a rural Catholic school, parents had lobbied for the school to be granted official integrated status which would keep it open and expand the student body while the Catholic maintained schools body lobbied for it to be closed (a Catholic sector school has never been switched to an integrated one and its widely perceived they would prefer schools be closed than reduce the sector).

The court struck down the closure order as being based on faulty information and SF has routinely been challenged for advancing education planning policies that protect the CMS sector enrolment at the expense of expanding integrated education

Having every major political party kowtowing to crazy religious extremists is just one more way the North must be terribly depressing to be politically active in as a young/middle class/left wing person.

I really hope the Alliance picks up speed up there.

I fall well short of middle class and I generally vote for Alliance but without much enthusiasm. It really does tend to be Holywood, darling :monocle: accents all round with them. I really wish there was a viable non-sectarian left wing party here

It's not like the Shinners are loving kneecapping people. Or even arguing on behalf of kneecapping people.

On the balance of odds the content of their message involving kneecapping has never been lower.

Edit: God damnit I didn't realize this comment was over a week old. In new content, I've had to essentially do the entire "Explain the Troubles" conversation at work 3 times this week after these documents came out. How about you all?
