I did laugh when Luke succinctly summarised the point of the prequels in two lines after a decade of fan outrage and bewilderment at them, for all this film's script problems it heart is in the right place

Second pop quiz time, Jivjov, and this one is really funny because we talked about this like a month ago.

Did any of the canon established in the novels matter at all to TLJ's story and plot? For example, Snoke.

As is the ability of understand nuance and process abstract concepts

No one is disputing that 'canonically' Coursant isn't in the Hosnian system or wherever, but if they blow up a planet which looks a hell of alot like Coursant and then Coursant never shows up again, they will have figuratively destroyed Coursant for all intents and purposes in the Star Wars storyline

Sorry that I actually pay attention to movies and can understand the difference between the word "Coruscant" and the word "Hosnian"

Because they look the same and perform the same narrative function, you dumb fucker.

Hosnian is also mentioned very quickly and importantly in the real world people do not have perfect recall for weird space planet names and that doesn't make them idiots.

Yep; Admiral Holdo was introduced in a Leia-centric book; gave some insight into her character kinda gives away that she's not, in fact, going to be a traitor; although I suppose they could have subverted all that development

Many scenes in the prequels take place on the capital of the Republic.

In a later movie, the First Order blows up the capital of the Republic.

This is what matters. The fact that a different planet from a different movie is still around and might one day again be the capital of a Republic is extraneous.

Except "figuratively destroying a planet" doesn't make a drat bit of sense, and even if it never shows up again, it has not been destroyed to the best of our knowledge.

Two completely different governmental bodies. The Republic from the prequels is not the same as the Republic that existed from shortly after RotJ til midway through TFA

This is your argument? With all the tie in stuff they've done, of all the talk of Rian having elements put in the book, it comes down to 'Holdo was mentioned in this one'?

It seemed the most directly connected, given Holdo's importance to the plot of TLJ.

Both things are truuuue. The capital of the republic means something because it's been shown a lot, and re using the symbology of it as a shorthand means that for a lot of people coruscant, which they are way more likely to know, exploded.

Movies are not only about what they literally depict, but also about what they mean. Hosnian Prime serves the same role as Coruscant, and is a clear visual quotation of Coruscant, and indeed the only thing that differs about it from Coruscant is the name. If it were actually Coruscant, the movie would be the same; only a few possible sequels would be different. The Last Jedi is not one of the sequels that would be different.

They restored a Republic, but it was not identical or a direct continuation of the previous Republic. Read Bloodlines for more info on on the political structure of the New Republic

8 out of 10 feels about right. Knock a couple points off for the casino planet diversion and Benecio Del Toro being too weird by half and a couple janky parts.

Casino planet did have a bunch of cool poo poo to it. It was just weird that they just left the big chase that was going on for a hijinks-filled romp.
